Incidents of hate crime against the immigrants in USA became a rational subject matter for cinema and entertainment. Hollywood is all set to make a film on the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla in the Kansas shooting at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, which shook the Indian community in America and beyond. The Kansas shooting was followed by a few cases of hate crime against and public harassment of some Indians in USA.

Titled Ray of Hope, the upcoming Hollywood film on the Kansas shooting and its aftereffects is being produced by People Media, a subsidiary of PeopleTech Group. A macro picture of the micro scenario of hate crime attacks on immigrants in USA, Ray of Hope will be the first ever film on violence against an Indian in the US.

Drawing upon the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, an aviation engineer from Hyderabad, and its impact on Indian Diaspora, the film Ray of Hope will walk Americans through the foundation of America as a democratic, capitalistic, sovereign nation of immigrants. Undeniably, immigration is the foundation brick of America.

Shooting of Ray of Hope on the Kansas hate crime incident will commence in Seattle and Bellevue soon. It’s a collaborative project in association with Tasveer, a non-profit Indian organization in Seattle, Washington. Co-founded by Rita Meher to dispel the prejudices against South Asians in USA post the 9/11 terrorist attack, Tasveer will act as a local media partner for the film.

Though the plot of the film Ray of Hope on the Kansas shooting will revolve around the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, the story will spiral out to spread a message of hope among the immigrants in America, penetrating the webs of violence, bigotry, confusion, misunderstanding and commotion in current times.

Ian Grillot, the Kansas shooting hero, will be another character in Ray of Hope. The film will also depict his character to show how an American risked his own life to save two Indians, in order to give the message that love is around the corner when hate lurks. This Hollywood film by Dave Pinn, will also throw some light on how immigrants contribute to nurture the growth of America.

This morning veteran Indian actor Anupam Kher woke up to congratulations from his fans and co-stars including Robert De Niro. June 14 is not just another day in the life and career of the actor who has made his mark in Bollywood and Hollywood because he announced his 500^th film, a significant milestone.

Anupam Kher’s announcement about his upcoming Hollywood film titled The Big Sick coincided with his actor-cum-politician wife Kiron Kher’s birthday today.

The actor took to Twitter to share this news along with a congratulatory note from none other than Hollywood actor Robert De Niro who he had worked with in Silver Linings Playbook, a 2013 Oscar winner. Robert De Niro said in a video clip, “Anupam, I just want to say congratulations on finishing your 500^th film. That’s amazing! In America, maybe I have done 90 or 95 movies, but what you have done is incredible. Congratulations again!”

Anupam Kher’s 500^th film The Big Sick is really a big milestone in his acting career which picked up following the box office success of Saaransh in which the then 28-year-old Kher played a retired middle-class man and a bereaved father who lost his son in New York. Saaransh, his second film, was also chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1984.

The Big Sick also stars Holly Hunter whose The Piano fetched the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1993, Ray Romano who won Emmy Awards twice for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Everybody Loves Raymond, Kumail Nanjiani who is best known for his role in HBO’s Emmy Award nominated series Silicon Valley, and Zoe Kazan, a Los Angeles based actor & playwright.

Anupam Kher was felicitated with honorary citizenship of Texas in the US as a tribute to his performance in the theatre play ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha,’ which became a hit with the Indian Americans in Houston last year. – IndianEagle

National Geographic’s latest The Story of God with Morgan Freeman documentary series features Morgan Freeman, an eminent Hollywood actor, in quest of how the perception of God has changed over centuries. Morgan Freeman who played God in two feature films, Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty, by Tom Shadyac takes a spiritual journey through seven countries including Turkey, Egypt, India and Mexico in The Story of God, a six-part series beginning Sunday.

It is National Geographic’s The Story of God documentary that brought him to India for a maiden visit to Gaya and Varanasi last year. He found the diversity in the life and culture of those two most popular destinations for pilgrimage so riveting that he would love to return to Incredible India to make a movie.

Since the first trailer of Disney’s The Jungle Book hit the Internet on February 7, Mowgli who is the only human character among various species of animals in Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale has been lavished with attention from all around. The surging mass interest in the character of Mowgli is because of Neel Sethi, an Indian-American boy in New York City, who is playing Mowgli in Disney’s The Jungle Book.

‘Who is Neel Sethi in The Jungle Book?’ has been trending on social media. He is an 11-year-old elementary school student of Indian origin from the state of Punjab in India. His Indian American parents are settled in New York. Disney’s The Jungle Book is Neel Sethi’s debut into acting on celluloid. He is the only human actor to work in this Hollywood film. The other characters are computer-generated graphics figures with voiceover.

‘How did casting of Neel Sethi in The Jungle Book happen?’ is a story. This New York based Indian-American boy was selected from among thousands of contestants for the role of Mowgli during auditions in the United States, the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Director John Favreau is confident about the casting and sanguine about the success of Neel Sethi as Mowgli in The Jungle Book.

In one of his recent interviews during the promotion of Disney’s The Jungle Book in India, Neel Sethi said that he had been to India from USA five times. He shared that he is fond of actress Priyanka Chopra who has voiced one of the animal characters in the Hindi version of film and that his favorite is pani puri from the street food of India.

Both director and casting director are eloquent in praise of Neel Sethi’s talent, attitude, positivity, intelligence and charisma. According to casting director Sarah Finn, he is warm, accessible, and mature beyond his years. He is a show stealer in the entire production unit of the film.

It is the third time that Asif Kapadia made it big at BAFTA Awards. The Warrior was his directorial debut filmed across the sand dunes of Rajasthan and the terrains of the Himalayas. Asif Kapadia’s Senna is a poignant portrait of racing driver Ayrton Senna, who died in 1994.

A London based filmmaker of Indian origin; Asif Kapadia has recently completed shooting for Ali and Nino, a period film based on a novel by Kurban Said. The film with an international cast is set in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Indian Actress Priyanka Chopra is on a roll in the United States. After having hit the jackpot with her debut on the American Television, she is all set to enter Hollywood. Interestingly, she will play Victoria Leeds, a villain in Baywatch, drawing a sharp contrast to her portrayal of an FBI agent in the “Quantico” TV series. Baywatch is the story of California lifeguards whose leader teams up with a young Olympian to save their beloved bay. To be produced under the Paramount banner, the upcoming Hollywood film Baywatch will also star Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach.

Victoria Leeds in Baywatch is not her first villainous character in reel. She donned the hat of villains in Bollywood films like Aitraaz and 7 Khoon Maaf. She is excited about playing a negative role in Seth Gordon’s Baywatch after a long time. “Thank u guys! Being a bad girl after so long! Playing a villain will be fun!” Priyanka wrote on Instagram.

The shoot of Seth Gordon’s Baywatch is in conflict with Priyanka’s schedule for “Quantico”, which is yet to be worked out. Seth Gordon is an American filmmaker, producer and screenwriter. Grew up in Illinois, he came into spotlight of the showbiz world with his documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Seth Gordon debuted into mainstream American cinema as director of Horrible Bosses in 2011.

Though Seth Gordon’s Baywatch is the latest feather to the cap of Priyanka Chopra in America, she has been basking in the glory of having achieved a People’s Choice Award for her performance in the American TV series “Quantico.” She is also playing a tough cop in clash with goons and law breakers in Bollywood film Gangaajal 2 directed by Prakash Jha.

Saroj Khan’s choreography in popular Bollywood blockbusters including Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Chandni, Tezaab, Pardes, Hum Dil CHuke Sanam, Lagaan, Devdas, Swades, Mangal Pandey, and Guru has catapulted her career to international levels. Among the best Indian choreographers in Hindi Cinema, she did choreography for more than 2000 films. One of the upcoming Hollywood films is Heartbeats by Duane Adler, who wrote the screenplay for the Step Up series of dance-based movies. Indian actor Amitash Pradhan from the Tamil Film industry of Chennai has bagged a lead role in Heartbeats, which will be shot mostly in India.

Duane Adler’s Heartbeats is a musical dance drama in which hip hop will meet Bollywood dance of India. Heartbeats will depict a triangular love story of an Indian choreographer, an American dancer and a budding dancer in India. South Indian actor Amitash Pradhan will play the Indian choreographer who meets the American hip hop dance during a wedding function in India, introduces her to the dance heritage of India, and eventually falls in love with her.

Actress Krystal Ellsworth has been roped in to play the American hip hop dancer on a visit to India. Krystal Ellsworth herself is a dancer in real life. The third character in the triangular love story of Duane Adler’s Heartbeats will be essayed by Aneesha Joshi from India. Los Angeles based Krystal Ellsworth has essayed the role of a dancer in most of her Hollywood films. She played a park dance in Breaking Through, a secret high dancer in No Strings Attached, and an Ironette dancer in Iron Man 2.

Tamil cinema actor Amitash Pradhan debuted into acting with the character of a villain in Velai Illa Pattathari (Unemployed Graduate). Amitash earned critical acclaims in this blockbuster of 2014. He is sanguine about his role of an Indian choreographer in Heartbeats by Duane Adler who is known for his screenwriting for such music & dance films as Step Up and Save the Last Dance.   

Duane Adler’s Heartbeats is expected to be a dance euphoria by two of the finest choreographers in the world: Tessandra Chavez, an Emmy award-winning choreographer, and Champa Gopikrishna, one of the choreographers in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first Nobel laureate in literature, will be seen in an English biopic titled Thinking of Him by eminent Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Cesar. He is the first English filmmaker to make a biopic on such a larger-than-life personality with numerous feathers in the cap as Rabindranath Tagore. Academy Awards winning Satyajit Ray was the first filmmaker to have made a documentary on the Bard of Bengal in 1961.

It is a herculean task to make a feature film on the eventful life of Rabindranath Tagore, who traveled across the world in the times where there was no airplane and who played a great role in the movement against the partition of Bengal during British Raj. That’s why the film Thinking of Him will capture Tagore’s life in the year 1924 when he was 63 and lived in Shantiniketan, which he founded after receiving the Nobel Prize for Gitanjali in 1913.

Naseeruddin Shah has seen the best of Indian Cinema during his acting career spanning from 1980 till date. He is an eminent theatre thespian too. He has won the National Film Award three times and several Filmfare Awards besides the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the government of India.

Naseeruddin Shah himself is a great persona with a rich repertoire of feature films, documentaries and theater plays. He has acted in many critically acclaimed movies including Hey Ram, A Wednesday, Sparsh, Katha, and Maqbool, an Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. He has also appeared in a few English language films like The Perfect Murder, adapted from a 1964 British crime fiction, and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, a 2003 Hollywood flick starring Sean Connery.

Media quoted filmmaker Pablo Cesar saying, “I am a Naseeruddin Shah fan and have watched his Manthan, Bhumika, Junoon and Sparsh many times.” He unhesitatingly said, “Shah is an inspiring figure to me.” He will soon fly to Mumbai to discuss the project with the actor. Shantiniketan and Argentina will be the shooting locations of Thinking of Him, which will be filmed in color except flashback scenes in black & white. The shooting will begin in summer 2016.

Actor Anupam Kher will be seen in a Hollywood film, The Headhunter’s Calling, to be directed by Mark Williams, who is an actor, comedian and screenwriter. Mark Williams is best known for playing Arthur Weasley in Harry Potter films. Anupam Kher, a maverick Indian actor who made his acting debut in Bollywood in 1982, will play an Indian-American oncologist in the upcoming Hollywood film.

Anupam Kher will share space with actor Gerard Butler on the screen. Gerard Butler is also co-producer of the movie. Kher is quoted saying, “Gerard Butler is a great actor. It’s nice to work with him.” Willem Dafoe, Alison Brie and Alfred Molina are other actors in the cast. Bill Dubuque, an eminent screenplay writer, penned the script. The shooting has already begun in Toronto.

Anupam Kher is not a new face in Hollywood. Besides several hundred Indian films, he has a few Hollywood movies to his fame. He acted in in award-winning Hollywood films like Silver Linings Playbook, Bend It Like Behckham, Lust, and Caution. Lust directed by Ang Lee won the Golden Lion award in 2007. David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook won the Academy Awards in 2013.

Kher played Dr. Chris Patel in Silver Linings Playbook. His immaculate portrayal of the character earned him critical acclaims in Hollywood. He shared space with Robert De Niro, an Academy Award winning actor and producer. Anupam Kher has such a good rapport with Robert De Niro that the latter visited his acting school, “An Actor Prepares,” in Mumbai.

Born in Shimla in the Himalayan region of India, actor Kher has donned different hats and added multiple feathers to his cap. He earned India’s National Film Award for Maine Gandhi Nahin Mara (2005), which he produced and acted in. He has acted with superstar Shah Rukh Khan in several Bollywood films, including Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Veer-Zara. He was also cast in Bride and Prejudice in 2004 and The Mistress of Spices in 2006.

Anupam Kher is the only Indian actor to have received honorary citizenship of Texas as a tribute to his play Mera Who Matlab Nahi Tha, which he staged across the USA and Canada in August this year. The American audience liked his performance and the play so much that the Mayor of Houston declared August 7 as Anupam Kher Day. The Mayor of Las Vegas did the same on September 10, 2015.
