Bengal is all set to add a new tourist attraction to the list of the best places to visit in Kolkata. It is a brand new museum on the history of College Street in the heart of Kolkata. Though the Wikipedia page of College Street has got a very little to say about this popular landmark in the City of Joy, the upcoming museum will walk you through the bygone days when College Street used to be the epicenter of Bengal’s educational evolution and a socio-political haven for the then Calcutta’s intelligentsia.

To be set up at Sanskrit University’s College Street campus, the museum will also exhibit Bengal’s eventful journey from the then Calcutta to the present Kolkata, which College Street has been an integral part of for decades. Glimpses of how the undivided Bengal became an educational hub of prestigious institutions such as Presidency University and Calcutta University in British India will be showcased at the museum on College Street.

Colloquially known as Boi Para (Colony of Books), College Street carries the footprints of the then Presidency College’s eminent alumni including Swami Vivekananda, Subhash Chandra Bose, Amartya Sen, Satyajit Ray, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Aparna Sen, Ashok Kumar, Sukumar Sen, Jibanananda Das, Shankha Ghosh, Meghnad Saha, Bankim Chandra, Michael Madhusudan Dutt and likes.

The proposed museum on College Street will be a mirror to the political landscape of Calcutta. The blooded history of such political movements as India’s freedom struggle and Bengal’s Naxal movement in free India will be on display in the museum.

The month-long, historical agitation against the hike of tram fares in the post-independence era of Calcutta will also be part of the exhibition in the museum on College Street in Kolkata. The mass protest against the British Tram Company’s decision to increase fares by one paisa for the unhappy tram commuters in 1953 is still a haunting tale of two cities – Calcutta and Howrah.

The largest second-hand book market in the world, College Street is widely known for the famed Coffee House in Kolkata. The upcoming museum on College Street is simply unimaginable without depicting the stories of Coffee House, a popular hangout for the literati like Rabindranath Tagore, Manna Dey, Mrinal Sen and Satyajit Ray, and political revolutionaries in the bygone heady days of Bengal.

Also, the museum will depict interesting glimpses of life in College Street which echoes the cacophony of bargaining between customers and shopkeepers at hundreds of bookstores on both sides of the road. How the decades-old bookstores came into existence and have managed to survive in the rapidly changing digital landscape will be a part of the museum on College Street in Kolkata.

Amidst the commotion over immigration in the current political climate of USA, Indian Americans are gradually imprinting their cultural heritage on a firm base. Earlier this year (2017), the Indian American community got the first dedicated university for Indian Performing Arts in California. Now they got a dedicated Indian cultural art museum in Pearland, Texas.

The inauguration of the Kannappan Art Museum in Pearland was held on May 26, 2017. Eminent Texas Indian Americans and leading American officials including Pearland Mayor Tom Reid attended the inauguration. Named after Sockalingam Sam Kannappan, a renowned Indian American engineer, the Indian cultural museum is officially recognized by Pearland Mayor who presented a certificate to Mr. Kannappan in the presence of other dignitaries at the event.

From the inaugural day, the Kannappan Art Museum Pearland in Texas has been running a unique exhibition on cultural artifacts of India, titled ‘Vision of India,’ sponsored by the Pearland Alliance for Art & Culture. The ongoing exhibition is a rare opportunity to experience the cultural richness and artistic opulence of India through glimpses of the artifacts on display, which will be added to the treasure of the museum in the future.

Curated by Sockalingam Sam Kannappan, the sculptural artifacts on display at the Kannappan Art Museum Pearland have been brought from different parts of India. The statues of various Indian dance forms and myriad folk cultures speak about different eras of India’s cultural evolution. Some of the exhibits in the 100+ collection give a picture of day-to-day life in India.

The current location of the museum is temporary as a permanent infrastructure will be built at a grand scale for the museum in Pearland. The exhibition space measures only 390 square feet at the current location of the museum. The photographs and replicas of different structures in India, which are supposed to inspire the architectural design of the museum at its permanent location in future, are also on display here.

Sockalingam Sam Kannappan from the Pearland Indian community in Texas contributed immensely to the design and construction of Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland. This is the only temple consecrated in honor of Goddess Meenakshi outside of India. Modeled on the original Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Pearland Meenakshi Temple is the third Hindu shrine built in the United States.

At the upcoming permanent location, the Kannappan Art Museum Pearland will have a unique exhibition model to display not only the history of India’s cultural heritage but also the importance of Indian American culture. The influence of Indian culture on America will also be exhibited here. The current exhibition ‘Visions of India’ is expected to expand as a full immersion installation. The museum authority’s agenda also includes a plan to launch interactive programming for kids and audio-visual facility for discussion on the exhibits.

Among the attendees at the inauguration of the Kannappan Art Museum Pearland was Mr. Surendra Adhana, Deputy Consul General of India at Houston, who praised Sockalingam Sam Kannappan for his dedicated service to the Indian community in USA.

Needless to say, India earned freedom at the expense of numerous sacrifices which incurred overwhelming loss and inflicted incurable pain to its people. The biggest sacrifice that Mother India made was giving up a part of her being, which is an independent nation today. The partition of India in 1947, one of the greatest migrations in the history of mankind, left millions of wounds behind in time warp on both sides of the border. The horrors and ordeals of the partition are timeless bitter memories which are being preserved in different shapes and formats, abstract and concrete, by India’s Partition Museum in Amritsar.

The first of its kind in India, the Partition Museum showcases rare exhibits of the undivided colonial India, including personal artifacts of the survivors of the 1947 partition. The recorded oral stories and experiences of those who lived through the pains during and after the partition are on display in the museum. A belated tribute to the victims of the bloodiest migration of the 20th century, it helps memorialize what continues to shape India, what schoolbooks are devoid of, and what Indian millennials are unaware of.

Amritsar Partition Museum, India tourist places, 1947 partition, Indian museums

Founded by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust, the Partition Museum of India is the first such museum in the world. A must-visit tourist place in Punjab, the museum is part of the recently inaugurated Heritage Street from the Golden Temple to the Town Hall in Amritsar. The first phase of the museum opened to the public in October 2016. The second and last phase will be completed before August 15, 2017 and inaugurated on the occasion of the 70th year of the 1947 Partition.

Punjab and Bengal were the worst victims of the partition and the epicenters of violence. These two states suffered major blows of violence, atrocity, hunger and disease after the line of division was sketched on the map of undivided India. The museum’s collection of personal articles, which forms the legacy of a bygone era, is mostly from Bengal and Punjab. That’s why the Partition Museum in Punjab is being touted as a people’s museum and a physical memorial.

The Partition Museum of India portrays intimate stories of loss, separation, bereavement, pain, rootlessness and existential crisis through its collection of exhibits. For instance, two articles in the collection belong to a betrothed couple who got separated in the turmoil of the partition. Accidentally, they found each other in a refugee camp in Amritsar. They tied their nuptial knot in 1948. In another instance, a Punjabi businessman’s wife and daughter narrowly escaped the violence in Peshwar (in Pakistan) and reached a refugees camp for Hindus and Sikhs. The only things they managed to keep with them were wedding jewelry and a radio. The radio is on display at the Partition Museum in Amritsar.

The stories of dismay, distress, disappointment, and depression in the refugee camps on both sides of the border have also found eloquence in paintings at the museum. The paintings by artist Sardari Lal Parasher, one of the survivors and a camp commander at one of the refugee camps, have brought those unheard stories alive. His sketches depict the gloom and melancholy he had experienced at the camp.

The Partition Museum of India offers inspirational stories of bravery and courage alongside the heart-rending stories of partition. The Gallery of Hope at the museum tells the stories of those who survived the onslaughts of partition and rebuilt their fortune almost out of nothing in the post-independence era. One such inspiring story of bravery is that of the Manjul Family that gritted their teeth to survive with a small bicycle business and ended up establishing Hero Honda, a reputed motorcycle brand in India, after having left everything behind in Pakistan.

Among the tourist attractions of Punjab, Amritsar’s Partition Museum is undoubtedly next to the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in terms of historical significance. This museum of memories, some painful while some inspiring, will be continuing to make the next generations learn what Mother India and her children went through before, during and after the partition in 1947.

Unfortunately, India’s first underground restaurant in Ahmedabad pulled its shutters down in a week of its opening due to operational issues. Don’t feel disappointed! The underground museum at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi is the newest of all tourist attractions in India. With the first phase opened in 2014, it is India’s first underground museum sprawling over 1.30 lakh square feet across three floors. The museum is designed by Saroj Ghose, an eminent museologist, and cost INR 80 crore.

India’s first underground museum at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi is an enlightening walk through the era of the British Raj, the history of India’s freedom movement, and the offices of Indian presidents from Dr. Rajendra Prasad to the present president Pranab Mukherjee.

With its public opening scheduled on October 2 coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum is full of historical interests, including unforgettable events in the history of India’s freedom struggle from the Swadeshi Movement of 1905 to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 to the Dandi March of 1930.

The underground museum has brought alive those intriguing stories of the fight for independence by displaying a number of life-size wax effigies which seem to bring alive the past. The replica of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Punjab, one of the most brutal crimes against humanity, will surely give you goose bumps.

What is the most unique about the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum is projection of historical facts through virtual-reality storytelling. The museum features a giant television screen to offer a virtual tour of the President’s private study. You can see yourself with the first citizen of India in a virtual world by pressing the button attached to the television screen.

The attraction of India’s first underground museum at Rashtrapati Bhavan also comprises a virtual reality experience of some landmark moments from the eventful life of Mahatma Gandhi, such as signing the Gandhi Irwin Pact at the Viceroy House and the Dandi March.

The personal belongings of Indian presidents are among the best things to see at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum in New Delhi. You can see a collection of books penned by the former President APJ Abdul Kalam and the priceless gifts that President Pranab Mukherjee received on his visits to various countries on display.

Interestingly, the Mercedes that the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi received from then King of Jordan, and the veena that Dr. Kalam used to play in solitude are among the few show-stealing exhibits at the museum.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum also houses an art gallery with larger-than-life paintings, historic artifacts and lively portraits of Indian presidents on a spectacular display. The art gallery is like a corridor with a hidden passage to the glorious past of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. A section of the gallery exhibits rare photographs of Indian presidents with dignitaries from across the world.

The museum also hosts a unique hand-shadow show to give a picture of how India elects its president and how the presidential office functions. The hand-shadow show also highlights significance of the national emblem of India and other such key aspects.

‘If you want to leave your footprints on the sands of time, do not drag your feet’. It is one of the inspiring quotes by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, late President of India. True to his words, he left an everlasting impression in our lives and the history of India. After his demise in July 2015, several memorials, awards, monuments and educational institutions have been named or renamed in his honor. The latest initiative to commemorate the life and work of the legend is an upcoming memorial museum for Dr. Abdul Kalam in New Delhi.

The Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum is coming up at Dilli Haat, a hub of Indian handicraft culture in New Delhi. Slated for opening on July 27, the death anniversary of Dr. Kalam, the museum will showcase glimpses from his austere lifestyle and his significant contributions to science before he became the First Citizen of India in 2002. The museum will be open and free to all. Evidently, the Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum will be among the best places to visit in Delhi.

APJ Abdul Kalam memorials, Abdul Kalam Museum, Dilli Haat, Delhi tourist attractions

Though popular tourist attractions in Delhi include several museums like Toilet Museum and Dolls Museum, the memorial museum in honor of Scientist and President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam will be an altogether different place. Expected to be a thriving knowledge center, it will house some of Kalam’s personal belongings and possessions including his notes, clothes, spectacles and utensils from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, his birthplace.

An audio-visual presentation on the life, career and achievements of Dr. Kalam is another attraction of the upcoming Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum at Dilli Haat. Dilli Haat, a most frequented cultural hub, is quite popular with tourists in the national capital. A memorial museum based on the life of such a legend will be an enlightening attraction to the tourists on visit to Dilli Haat, according to Kapil Mishra, Delhi Tourism Minister.

Besides Delhi Tourism, the government of Tamil Nadu has instituted an award in his honor and is building a memorial in Rameshwaram. While Kerala set up a university after him, Uttar Pradesh honored the great leader by renaming Uttar Pradesh Technical University to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University. Odisha changed Wheeler Island’s name to Abdul Kalam Island in his memory. Even Switzerland declared May 26 as ‘Science Day’ in 2005 to commemorate Abdul Kalam’s visit to the country.

The Delhi government has roped in the ‘best people’ to design the Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum at Dilli Haat. The Delhi Tourism authority stated that the museum for Dr. Kalam is not meant to be another tourist attraction on the map of Delhi, but it would positively impact inbound tourism in the city. It is primarily a tribute to the Missile Man of India.

In 2015, the Narendra Modi style was the talk of the fashion world. Since his rise to the hot seat of India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has made headlines for not only diplomacy, controversies and foreign trips but also his traditional Indian fashion. Over 40 African leaders donned signature “Modi Kurtas” in silk and “Modi Jackets” in khadi for a dinner at the third India-Africa summit in New Delhi.

In 2016, the Narendra Modi fashion will be put on display at Madame Tussauds Wax Museums in London, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. Who will be exhibiting the “Modi Kurtas” and “Modi Jackets” at those wax museums? The wax statues of Indian PM Narendra Modi himself!

Yes, soon Indian PM Narendra Modi’s life-size wax figures dressed in his signature silk kurtas and khadi jackets will share space with eminent global leaders at Madame Tussauds museums in Singapore, Bangkok, London and Hong Kong from April 2016. A team of Madame Tussauds’ artists took 4 months to craft each of PM Modi’s wax statues for a whopping $214K or £150,000. The statues feature a traditional pose making namaste with both hands joined in supplication. (watch the video below to see the making of Narendra Modi’s wax statues)

Since being elected to the prime ministerial office in 2014, Narendra Modi has made foreign trips to the US, the UK, the UAE, China, Canada, Singapore, Japan, France, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia and other countries. Now his traditional Indian fashion in khadi will be stealing the show at Madame Tussauds wax museums.

What made Madame Tussauds to spend a lavish amount of $214K for each of his wax figures?

In response to the mounting curiosity and excitement about it, Madame Tussauds described Narendra Modi as “a hugely important figure in world politics” and said that visitors would be glad to click selfies with the wax idols of such a great leader. Besides, PM Modi is currently the second most followed politician on Twitter next to the US President Barack Obama.

Where and when were the wax figures of Narendra Modi crafted? It happened at his own residence in New Delhi where he gave the museum team of artists and experts a sitting, according Kieran Lancini, the spokesperson of Madame Tussauds. Praising the team for its dedication and professionalism, the Indian Prime Minister said that he had the pleasure of standing next to the figures of various dignitaries for photographs during my visits to Madame Tussauds’ wax museums.

There is nothing surprising about the wax statues of Indian PM Narendra Modi at Madame Tussauds museums in Singapore, London, Thailand and Bangkok since he is among the most influential people on Internet. Time Magazine refers to him as an ‘Internet Star’ with over 32 million Facebook likes and 18 million Twitter followers. PM Modi has been on Time Magazine’s list of the most influential people on Internet for two consecutive years: 2015 and 2016.

New Delhi, the capital of India, is to get a Madame Tussauds museum in 2017, the India-UK Year of Culture. If the upcoming wax museum in Delhi will have a Narendra Modi statue is not yet confirmed. – IndianEagle

Asia’s biggest slum is all set to get a makeover. Yes, we are talking about India’s Dharavi which is the world’s most densely home to 1 million slum dwellers in Mumbai City. The name “Dharavi” brings up the repelling images of congestion, suffocation, dust and garbage to our minds after the portrayal of this Mumbai slum in several documentaries and feature films including the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire.

“Dharavi is getting a makeover,” sounds surprising to many of us because it is the only place in Mumbai which has grown but not developed over the years. Dharavi will play host to the world’s first slum museum in February 2016. Titled “Museum Dharavi,” it will be a mobile exhibition on the go across India showcasing the never-seen bright aspects of Dharavi slum dwellers.

Mumbai Dharavi, Interesting facts, Dharavi slum, slum museum, Mumbai tourist places

The first of its kind, the slum museum will show the world the other side of Dharavi replacing the age-old images of the slum stereotyped as one of the worst places in India. The project “Design Museum Dharavi” is aimed at highlighting how the slum dwellers of Mumbai contribute to economy, how important a role they play in recycling of waste, how arduous work they do, etc.

An initiative by artists Jorge Manes Rubio from Spain, Matias Echanove, Amanda Pinatih and Rahul Srivastava, the world’s first slum museum on wheels will project Dharavi as the most productive hub of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, goldsmiths, garbage collectors, potters and others in Asia. For the first time, the world will see how capable and creative the dwellers of Dharavi slum are despite incredibly tough living conditions.

Once one of the islands that Mumbai City is built of; Dharavi has a residential unit and an industrial unit. The world’s first slum museum Dharavi will bring the hidden talents in the filthy alleys of this Mumbai slum to our notice. The collective production in the industrial unit of Dharavi is equal to a billion dollar industry. The industrial section of Dharavi Slum, though congested, chaotic, seedy and shabby, houses more than 7000 different small businesses and 20000 single-room factories.

The Dharavi Slum Museum will show how recycling became the most thriving business generating revenue from the discarded waste of Mumbai’s 21 million citizens. The small-scale industries of Dharavi manufacture leather goods, plastic containers, clay pots, embroidered garments, etc. for small and international markets. The estimated annual turnover of over US $665 million is one of the most interesting facts about Dharavi in Mumbai.

In 2010, Britain’s Prince Charles mentioned Dharavi as a role model of sustainable living for the relentless pursuit of recycling waste.

If you visit Dharavi Slum tomorrow, you will surely find open sewers and dirty lanes with strewn rubbish as the living conditions have remained the same. However, the small and medium size businesses of Dharavi have started using Whatsapp to communicate with clients and selling their products on ecommerce websites.

In 2015, Dharavi Slum hosted its first art fest “Alley Galli Biennale” that exhibited creative artworks by residential artists from the slums across Mumbai. The “Alley Galli Biennale” art festival continued for three weeks. – IndianEagle
