Lufthansa’s India network is on an expansion spree with two new additions to the airline’s winter 2023 schedule. To reduce the capacity overload at Frankfurt, Lufthansa flights to Bengaluru from Munich will take off starting 03 November this year. The thrice weekly service will be operated on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Part of the airline’s pre-pandemic network expansion, this new service will finally be launched before Diwali 2023. Lufthansa’s service to Hyderabad will be resumed this winter after a period of pandemic-induced suspension.

The commencement of Lufthansa flights to Hyderabad and Bengaluru will coincide with the rolling out of Lufthansa’s new Allegris cabins with innovative seat designs across all travel classes on Airbus 350s and B787 Dreamliner across. Allegris cabins in economy, premium economy, business, and first class will be equipped with a whopping 27,000 new seats promising a next level of comfort rather than luxury. In view of passengers’ demand for more comfort, space and privacy, the new cabins are designed to offer upgraded entertainment screens in the regular economy, pod-like seats in the premium economy, seat temperature control in the business class, and a spacious double suite in the first class.

Lufthansa Economy with neighbor-free seat option

The Allegris seats on Lufthansa economy flights to India, USA and other destinations will see several upgrades; the most significant being bigger entertainment screens. The new 13.3-in monitor on the back of every economy seat is flexible enough to pivot out so that it provides a better viewing experience when the passenger in front reclines his/her seat. Charging outlets, USB A and C, are among the upgrades to the new Economy Class Classic Seats in Lufthansa’s new Allegris cabins.

The ergonomically designed economy seats have adjustable headrest, common in economy these days, so that you can travel comfortably until arrival at your destination. Two rows of Lufthansa’s Economy Class Classic Seats will provide an additional 7 cm of legroom for optimum comfort on long-haul flights. Extra convenience is guaranteed as the seatback pocket has more pouches even for smaller items. Giving attention to economy travelers’ small needs, the airline provides a mobile device holder below the entertainment monitor. Bluetooth headphone connectivity is another significant addition in the standard economy.

“Once the new cabins are installed, you will be able to secure extra comfort and more personal space by blocking the seat next to yours in economy while or after booking your Lufthansa flights tickets on IndianEagle.com. The idea of a “neighbor-free seat” emerged during the pandemic when travelers with deep pockets wanted to ensure contactless travel above the clouds,” said Sourav Agarwal, the Editor of Travel Beats.

Lufthansa’s Premium Economy with pod-like seats

Lufthansa’s Allegris cabins with new Premium Economy seats will set a new benchmark and may give competition to Air India’s Premium Economy flights between USA and India. The pod-like premium economy seats on Lufthansa flights to USA and other major destinations will give you a business-class feel. Not just the headrest, but also the armrest and leg rest are adjustable so that you can have a comfortable seating position. In addition to USB ports and a 110V socket, each seat has a fold-out table that is spacious enough to keep a laptop or a book on.

The USP of the new Lufthansa Premium Economy Class is that you can recline your seat without intruding the space of the co-passenger behind you. Curtained from the Economy and the Business Class cabins, the Premium Economy has 15.6-in 4K entertainment monitors with discreet screen. You will be able to fly entertained in peace using a noise-cancelling headphone available on board. The space for your personal belongings includes a coat hook and a water bottle holder.

The seats on Lufthansa’s premium economy flights to India/USA will be the traveler’s personal feel-good area for working, dining and relaxing in the sky. The 99-cm seat pitch offers plenty of legroom, thereby ensuring an optimum level of comfort.

Lufthansa’s Business Class with seven different seat types

The new Allegris cabins with seven different seat designs in business class will surely raise demand for Lufthansa’s business class tickets and give the airline a competitive edge over its rivals. Each seat type comes with direct access to the aisle, adjustable lighting, lockable storage compartments, wireless charging facility, a noise-cancelling headphone, and a 10-inch tablet that will help travelers regulate seat temperature, lighting, and the inflight entertainment system to individualize their onboard experience.

Built-in seat temperature control and shoulder sink-in concept will be among the perks of flying in Lufthansa’s new business class. You can individually control the seat heater or cooler to customize the temperature and set the warmth required for comfortable sleep above the clouds. If you tend to sleep your sides, the business class seats with “shoulder sink-in” foam are designed exclusively for your comfort. No other airlines have these industry-first features.

In the upcoming Allegris cabins, the front row has Lufthansa’s Business Class Suites with closing doors. Designed like an oasis of absolute peace and privacy in the sky, the Business Class Suite with two adjacent seats offer ample space for two travelers to fly together comfortably. The suite is equipped with two 27-inch entertainment monitors. There is a mini bar stocked with various snacks and beverages. The suite is also ideal for your elderly parents’ relaxed flight on a long-haul route.

Among the non-suite seats on cheap Lufthansa business class flights to India/USA, you can book a Business Class Privacy Seat to get the best of your unaccompanied travel. The Business Class Privacy Seat next to a window and with some distance from the aisle offers a great deal of privacy on board. The private window will poeticize your thoughts over views of the clouds floating across the vast expanse of blue. You can relax comfortably or work peacefully in this personal retreat.

Lufthansa’s Business Class Privacy Seat with Baby is perfectly designed for travelers flying with a baby. This window seat in the last row close to the washroom with a changing table comes with a bassinet on the inner side and a higher partition. The new Allegris cabins have Business Class Extra Long Bed seats (2.2m) for those taller than 6.5 feet in height. The non-suite business class seats are equipped with 18-inch inflight entertainment screens.

Travel light or pay for check-in bags on international flights these days. In order to sustain their international operations, airlines are passing on the brunt of sky-high airfares to passengers and coming up with policies to maximize revenue from travel-related services or amenities. One of them being check-in baggage; airlines are curbing the freedom of economy fliers traveling with two free check-in bags in view of the jet fuel price rise and its impact on operating overheads.

If you book Lufthansa flights between India and USA / Canada, you will have to pay for checking-in more than one bag in the economy class. Effective from August 2022, Lufthansa’s check-in baggage policy for economy flights between India and USA / Canada is limited to one bag of up to 23 kg. To be precise, the German carrier will charge economy travelers for a second check-in bag from August 1.

Reportedly, checking-in a second bag of up to 23 kg on Lufthansa’s economy flights between North America and India will cost €200 (US$ 206) if booked in advance or online. It is €250 (US$ 257) if you pay for the additional piece of check-in baggage at the airport. It means now onwards, the cost of flying economy between Canada / USA and India goes up by USD 206 to 260 if you need to check in a second bag for a round trip on Lufthansa.

“Lufthansa’s new check-in baggage allowance for economy flights applies to other airlines in the Lufthansa Group, such as Swiss International Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Austrian Airlines. However, your travel on any route between India and North America (USA, Canada, Mexico) is not subject to the revised baggage rules if your Lufthansa flight tickets or flights with any other Lufthansa group airline were booked on or before July 31,” said the chief travel economist of Indian Eagle.

Lufthansa’s check-in baggage policy for business class flights between India and USA / Canada remains unchanged. The latest revision of the economy class check-in baggage allowance likens Lufthansa Group airlines to North American carriers including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Air Canada that allow economy class fliers to check in only one bag for free. This gives a competitive edge to Air India’ nonstop flights and the Middle East airlines which are known and preferred for their generous check-in baggage allowance on routes between North American and India.

Your face is your new boarding pass for Lufthansa international flights from the United States. The successful trial of Lufthansa’s biometric boarding procedure at Los Angeles International Airport will soon eliminate the need to present a boarding pass and a passport at all the US departure points of Lufthansa’s international flights. Lufthansa’s self-boarding biometric system using advanced facial recognition technology makes it possible to board a full Airbus A380 within a few minutes (not even half an hour).

Lufthansa biometric boarding, US airports face scan, Los Angeles Airport news, Lufthansa flights from USA

Lufthansa’s biometric boarding program heightens security, promises ease of use and ensures seamless passenger experience. In order to board Lufthansa flights from Los Angeles and other US airports (in the near future), travelers are required to walk through the self-boarding gate at the boarding point and pause for a while. The hi-tech cameras integrated to the biometric boarding gate click travelers’ facial images in a split of a second. The facial scans are sent to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency and uploaded to the CBP database for a quick verification in real time.

On successful matching of a traveler’s facial features and his existing facial scans in the CBP database, the biometric boarding system recognizes the traveler as boarded and lets him walk down the jet bridge to the aircraft cabin. Thus, Lufthansa’s A380 aircraft was fully boarded in less than 20 minutes during the trial of biometric boarding at Los Angeles Airport (LAX). The future of air travel and airport security, biometric boarding technology makes manual scanning of boarding passes a thing of the past.

Dubai International Airport is far ahead of other major airports on the globe in terms of using facial recognition technology. Previously, we at Indian Eagle wrote about Dubai Airport’s plan to install on-ground tunnels with facial scanning virtual aquariums as security checkpoints for all travelers, departing and transit, on the way to the boarding areas.

Lufthansa airline news, Lufthansa biometric boarding, US airports biometric

Lufthansa Airlines’ biometric boarding system is a series of automated kiosks integrating facial recognition technology, which was developed in collaboration with the LAX airport authority, the US Customs and Border Protection, and Amadeus that powers Lufthansa’s ticketing system. Besides facilitating automated boarding, the biometric system automatically doubles check passengers’ itineraries so that the passengers get onto the right plane.

Other major international airlines including British Airways and Delta Air Lines have already jumped onto the bandwagon, in compliance with the US Department of Homeland Security. The passengers of Delta flights from US airports including Regan Washington National Airport (DCA) can use their fingerprints as biometric boarding passes. Biometric boarding of British Airways flights is already in place at Los Angeles, New York JFK, Orlando and Miami airports.

Different Airline Policies for Flying during Pregnancy

Air India’s Policy for Pregnant Passengers

According to Air India’s policy for pregnant travelers, expectant women in good health can fly till the 32nd week of pregnancy. Air India permits traveling during pregnancy to women with high possibility of normal delivery till the 35th week. In this case, a medical certificate ascertaining their fitness for flying on long-haul routes is essential. Flying during pregnancy beyond 35 weeks may be possible on grounds of urgency or compassion. Flying while pregnant till the actual delivery requires women travelers to sign an indemnity bond and be accompanied by a physician on Air India’s international flights. Permission for traveling at the advanced stage of pregnancy should be sought from Air India’s Chief Medical Officer.

British Airways’ Policy for Expectant Women

British Airways’ policy for air travel and pregnancy is stricter than Air India’s. Expectant women cannot board British Airways’ flights once the 36th week of pregnancy is over. If you are expecting more than one baby, you cannot fly with British Airways after the end of the 32nd week of pregnancy. Flying while pregnant for more than 28 weeks requires you to carry a confirmation letter from your doctor or midwife with regards to your fitness for air travel and the possible delivery date.

United Airlines’ Policy for Pregnant Women

A medical certificate confirming your health and fitness is required for traveling on United Airlines in the ninth month of pregnancy. The certificate should not be dated before 72 hours of the scheduled departure. You need to carry the original certificate and its two copies as well. According to United Airlines’ policy for pregnancy and air travel, the medical certificate from a doctor or midwife should carry an official statement about your physical wellness for flying. Make sure to carry the original certificate in your handbag because you need to produce it while checking in at the departure airport. Flight attendants may ask for copies of the certificate during air travel.

Lufthansa’s Policy For Flying during Pregnancy

Lufthansa permits traveling during pregnancy in uncomplicated cases. Expectant women having no physical complicacy can board Lufthansa flights till 4 weeks before the possible delivery date or the end of the 36th week of pregnancy. It is not mandatory to carry a medical certificate. If you are expecting more than one baby in uncomplicated pregnancy, you can be flying while pregnant till the end of the 28th week. You need to undergo a health checkup and get a certificate from your physician or gynecologist confirming your medical fitness for air travel after the 36th week of pregnancy. The certificate should clearly state that flying while pregnant is not harmful for you.

Emirates’ Policy for Traveling during Pregnancy

Emirates Airlines’ policy for flying pregnant makes it mandatory for expectant women to carry a genuine medical certificate or letter issued by a qualified doctor or midwife during air travel in the 29th week of pregnancy. The medical certificate should state the type of pregnancy: singleton or multiple, the stage of pregnancy, the possible delivery date, and the traveler’s physical condition as well as fitness. If you forget to carry or fail to produce a duly signed medical certificate while checking in at the departure airport, you will be denied boarding. Emirates Airlines does not permit flying in case of multiple pregnancies after the 32nd week of gestation. Traveling on Emirates’ flights is permitted for single pregnancies even after the 36th week of gestation, on the basis of prior clearance by the airline’s medical department. You should fill a medical information form (MEDIF) and submit it to seek clearance.

Etihad’s Policy for Pregnant Travelers

On Etihad Airways, traveling while pregnant with one or two babies is possible without a medical certificate till the 28th week of gestation. However, Etihad Airways’ “flying while pregnant” policy is rigid for the period from the beginning of the 29th week till the end of the 36th week. Women expecting one baby or two need to submit a medical certificate stating their physical fitness and estimated delivery date prior to flying with Etihad Airways after the 28th week of pregnancy. The airline does not permit traveling after the 36th week in case of ‘single pregnancy’ and after the 32nd week of gestation in case ‘multiple pregnancy.’ The airline accepts only clinical / hospital letterheads issued, signed and stamped by doctors or midwives as medical certificates within 7 days before the date of departure.

Jet Airways’ Policy for Pregnancy Travel

Jet Airways’ ‘travel during pregnancy’ policy is more or less the same as that of other major international airlines. Traveling by air during pregnancy is permitted to expectant women till the end of the 28th week in complicated single pregnancy or uncomplicated multiple pregnancy cases. You need to get a medical fitness certificate from your treating doctor. Jet Airways’ ‘pregnancy travel’ policy allows only expectant women with uncomplicated single pregnancy to fly till the 35th week if they carry a ‘fit for air travel’ certificate from their treating doctors. No flight with Jet Airways is booked for women with uncomplicated multiple pregnancy or complicated single pregnancy after the 32nd week. The airline’s Medical Department clearance is a must.

*These airline policies for flying during pregnancy are applicable to most of international flights across the globe. The airlines may modify their policies for pregnant travelers at any time and without notification.

International airlines are trying every possible means to woo their customers on board. An exclusive selection of wine and champagne is the latest add-on to their inflight services for fliers in the First Class and the Business Class. With wine or champagne being a new luxury of flying in premium classes, British Airways, Emirates Airlines and Qantas Airways have already come up with innovative plans to quench the thirst of their premium customers with world-class alcoholic beverages.

However, Lufthansa Airlines is a few steps ahead of other international airlines including the three above. With the latest news of its inflight meals service making rounds in the world of aviation, Lufthansa seems to have proven a dark horse in the race. The German airline has taken an initiative to offer ‘restaurant service’ in the Business Travel Class. Evidently, Lufthansa has a bigger fish to fry than other airlines.

You did not surely get an impression that Lufthansa is to convert the Business Travel Cabin into an inflight restaurant. What the airline is all set to do is revamp the way it serves meals to Business Class passengers during long-haul flights. Lufthansa’s inflight menu for Business Class flights on long-haul routes is given a makeover to give passengers an overwhelming feel of restaurant-like service.

According to the plan, Lufthansa’s flight attendants will adapt their ways of service towards catering to the Business Class fliers’ needs on board with more attention and efficiency as it is in world-class restaurants. The inflight meals service enhancement that Lufthansa refers to as ‘restaurant service’ is focused on giving welcome to passengers by their names, taking individual orders for the meals of their choice, setting tables with ceramic crockery and  serving them directly from the galley. Also, flight trolleys and trays will be replaced with service plates.

Lufthansa rolled out the restaurant-like meal service on A380 flights to New York in June and to Miami in July this year. It will soon be launched on Lufthansa’s A380 flights to Delhi, Houston, Miami, New York, Beijing, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai and Johannesburg. Business Class travelers on B747-400, B747-8 and A340 flights from Frankfurt and Munich to Asia and the Middle East will be treated to the same restaurant-like inflight dining experience from October 2015.

Around 4,500 flight attendants have been meticulously trained to deliver Lufthansa’s inflight meal services with restaurant-like attributes. According to aviation critics, it is Lufthansa’s “another important step towards becoming the first five-star airline in the Western hemisphere.”

The new restaurant service is another customer-friendly medium of inflight entertainment on Lufthansa flights. – Indian Eagle
