Effective from the winter schedule 2023, United Airlines is restoring its US to India nonstop flights on the routes that the airline had suspended for 15 months due to the Russian airspace restrictions. SFO to Delhi, Newark to Mumbai, and Chicago to Delhi, among the busiest international routes, have not seen United Airlines flights to India since February 2022, except the Newark to Delhi service. United Airlines’ EWR to DEL flights continue to have been operative on daily basis.

What triggered the anticipated resumption of nonstop United flights on certain routes to and from India? Apparently, it is the government of India’s denial to United Airlines’ application seeking to codeshare on Emirates flights to India. The winter travel 2023 will see fare-based competition between United Airlines and Air India flights in the US-India market.

When can you book cheap United Airlines tickets of San Francisco to DEL and Newark to Mumbai flights? UA flights on these two routes are scheduled for Christmas holiday travel; however, exact dates of service recommencement are yet to be announced. The booking window will soon open on IndianEagle.com, a leading online travel booking partner of Indian Diaspora in America.

United Airlines’ Chicago to Delhi nonstop flights are scheduled for travel from 20 March 2024. This service is a direct competition to Air India on the route originating in the Midwest US. United Airlines’ premium economy is a leverage for travelers to be flying this route in March 2024 onwards, whereas Air India’s liberal checked baggage policy is a competitive edge over UA flights, especially for economy class travel.

Starting 28 October 2023, United Airlines’ daily service from Newark to New Delhi will become double to meet the nonstop US-India travel demand this winter. American Airlines and Air India operate nonstop flights to Delhi from the neighboring city airport (John F. Kennedy).

A fierce competition between the three carriers is highly anticipated to influence their pricing strategy for international flight tickets to India from USA, as travelers often choose to fly from New York JFK Airport rather than Newark Liberty Airport. Whether your travel class is United Polaris, Premium Plus or Economy Plus, you can check itineraries, compare fare deals, book flights, and earn reward points easily on the website of Indian Eagle.

What about the SFO to Bengaluru nonstop service project that United Airlines deferred during the pandemic? Reportedly, this project has been shelved forever leaving the space for Air India’s dominance in operating SFO to BLR flights.

Various international travel regulations gave a fillip to the demand for nonstop flights between USA and India during the pandemic. Starting 2023 onwards, the demand in this sector will shoot up as senior citizens and family travelers prefer convenience to costs these days. A one-way trip on most of the nonstop flights from USA to India takes 13 to 17 hours, which is 6 to 8 hours shorter than one-stop flights. Simple itineraries, thorough baggage check-in, and less jet lag are a few other advantages of traveling on long-haul routes without any international transit.

Usually, nonstop or direct flights cost a little more than two-stop or one-stop flights. However, you can save on USA to India direct flights tickets through IndianEagle.com, a trusted travel-booking partner of Indians in North America. Currently, nonstop Air India flights between USA and India make a larger pie of this segment. With its fleet being expanded and upgraded to international standards, Air India will be thriving as an unrivalled player in the nonstop/direct travel corridor.

Nonstop Flights between USA and India:

  • Chicago ORD to Delhi by Air India
  • New York JFK to Delhi by Air India
  • New York JFK to Mumbai by Air India
  • San Francisco to Delhi by Air India
  • San Francisco to Mumbai by Air India
  • Washington DC to Delhi by Air India
  • Newark EWR to Mumbai by Air India
  • SFO to Bengaluru BLR by Air India
  • Newark (EWR) to Delhi (DEL) by United Airlines
  • Newark EWR to Mumbai by United Airlines (to be resumed this winter 2023)
  • San Francisco to Delhi by United Airlines (to be resumed this winter 2023)
  • Chicago ORD to Delhi by United Airlines (to be resumed on 20 March 2024)
  • New York JFK to Delhi by American Airlines
  • Chicago ORD to Hyderabad by Air India (suspended)
  • New York JFK to Mumbai by Delta Airlines (suspended)

2023 will see more nonstop flights from New York to Mumbai, as Air India is all set to serve this one of the busiest routes in the US-India travel corridor in February. Delta flights to India were discontinued during the pandemic, just after one year of the airline’s comeback to Mumbai in December 2019. In view of Delta Airlines’ continued suspension of nonstop flights to Mumbai from USA, Air India is the only carrier to provide JFK to Mumbai direct flights starting February 14, 2023.

Among the USA to India nonstop flights, American Airlines flights to Delhi from NYC JFK are extended to Mumbai by codeshare partners – Vistara and IndiGo. A one-way trip on nonstop Air India flights from JFK to Mumbai will take 14 hours 10 minutes, whereas the travel time on American Airlines-IndiGo codeshare flights via Delhi is 21 hours 45 minutes.

Air India and United Airlines are the only carriers operating nonstop flights from Chicago to New Delhi, India. Air India flights from Chicago ORD to Delhi IGI Airport take 14 hours 10 minutes for a one-way trip. Chicago to Delhi nonstop flights on United Airlines take 15 hours 45 minutes for one-way travel. Chicago to Hyderabad nonstop flights continue to be suspended. IndianEagle.com books cheap one-stop flights between Chicago to HYD Airport round the year.

As of today, San Francisco to India is the busiest and most popular route served by several major airlines. SFO is the only US airport having direct connectivity to New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Cheap Air India tickets for SFO to Delhi nonstop flights and direct SFO to Mumbai flights are available on IndianEagle.com. The San Francisco to Delhi route continues to see United flights suspended in the event of the Russian airspace restrictions. Starting from March 2023, United Airlines will get into competition with Air India flights on the SFO and BLR Airport route.

New Delhi is the most connected destination for nonstop flights from the United States. Washington DC, Chicago, Newark EWR, New York, and San Francisco have direct connectivity to Delhi IGI Airport. American Airlines, United, and Air India nonstop flights to New Delhi are in a head-to-head competition with the Middle East carriers operating one-stop flights between USA and Delhi. Here is the travel time that the below airlines will take for a one-way JFK to DEL flight on 14 January 2023:

  • Air India: 13 hrs 50 minutes (nonstop)
  • American Airlines: 15 hrs 20 minutes (nonstop)
  • Emirates: 17 hrs 10 minutes (layover 1 hr 35 minutes)
  • Qatar Airways: 18 hrs 15 minutes (layover 2hrs 25 minutes)
  • Etihad Airways: 18 hrs 50 minutes (layover 3 hrs)
  • Turkish Airlines: 19 hours (layover 3 hrs 35 minutes)

Seattle to India direct flights have an uncertain future, as American Airlines’ plans for the Seattle to Bengaluru nonstop route have been shelved indefinitely. Since the route was announced, we had waited for the launch; but the pandemic pushed the launch from 2020 to 2022, and finally, American Airlines put this route on hold. However, you can grab the best low-fare deals for Seattle to India flights with short layovers from IndianEagle.com.

The growing preference for direct flights to India over connecting flights is one of the developments in the US-India air travel in the post-COVID19 world. Two of the premier US carriers – United Airlines and American Airlines – are catching on to the trend by launching nonstop flights to India from some of their US hubs. While United Airlines started Chicago to Delhi nonstop flights on December 10, 2020, American Airlines launched the New York to Delhi nonstop service in October 2021.

The year 2023 will see nonstop flights to Bangalore from the West Coast of USA by United Airlines as the most-awaited launch of this service has been postponed to March 25, 2023. United Airlines announced May 26 for the launch of nonstop SFO to Bangalore flights today. The economically viable route, San Francisco to Bengaluru, was supposed to see United Airlines’ nonstop service in May 2021, but the launch was cancelled due to the deadly second wave in India and rescheduled on May 26, 2022. American Airlines’ Seattle to Bengaluru flights are likely to take off by this year end.

Currently, Air India is ruling this route with daily nonstop service. Direct flights to Bengaluru from SFO, USA – which has lots of untapped potential – will prove to be a Midas touch for United Airlines. According to aviation market analysts, Air India and United Airlines will cater the growing demand for business class flights between the Silicon Valley of America and the Silicon Valley of India.

Since 2010, Air India has been unrivalled in operating most of the nonstop routes between USA and India. The upcoming daily United flight between SFO and BLR is being anticipated as a stiff competition to Air India. Indians in and around San Francisco can travel to their destinations in South India through Kempegowda International Airport. Furthermore, Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways’ fights from Seattle-Tacoma are providing connectivity to Bangalore from the West Coast.

“There is high demand for nonstop flights from USA to Chennai and Kolkata, according to our several surveys. Nonstop flights are shorter than nonstop hub flights. Most of our customers are seeking itineraries with short travel time for their round trips to India this year end and in 2022. United Airlines having added two new direct flights – SFO to BLR and ORD to DEL – brightens our hope for the opening up of more and more nonstop routes between USA and India,” said the chief information officer of Indian Eagle, a leading travel-booking partner of Indians in America.

United Airlines joined other US civil carriers in withdrawing from the Russian airspace amid the ongoing geopolitical crisis. This move has resulted in temporary suspension of United flights to and from India on two of the busiest routes: Newark to Mumbai and San Francisco to Delhi. The airline has been rerouting flights to other destinations since February 24, 2022, but SFO to Delhi and Newark to Mumbai are the last routes to see United flights bypass the Russian airspace.

direct United flights to India, cheap United flight tickets India

Reportedly, United Airlines’ SFO-DEL-SFO flights (UA867/UA868) and EWR-BOM-EWR flights (UA829/UA830) are suspended through March 10. Currently, the airline is routing some of the flights from SFO to Delhi via Denver, Chicago, or Newark, thereby increasing the total travel time up to 30 hours, which is almost double the time that a nonstop flight usually takes. Similarly, Newark-Mumbai flights are being routed through Delhi IGI Airport where a layover for 3 to 6 hours is adding to the total travel time. Hence, United Airlines’ fares for these routes are exorbitantly high these days.

The airline is evaluating alternate options available for these routes. United Airlines’ spokeswoman Leslie Scott said, “We may have additional adjustments to our flight schedule for India in the days ahead as the situation develops.”

“United Airlines being one of the first preferences not only for nonstop flights to India but also remarkable service on board, the suspension of the routes has left many of our customers at a loss. A few of them were about to travel to India after almost two years of the pandemic. This is another setback to their travel plans. Our toll-free helpline is open for cancellation-related queries and rescheduling,” said the chief customer relations officer of IndianEagle.com.

However, with alternate routes being available outside of Russia, United Airlines continues operating direct flights to Delhi from Chicago and Newark. Notably, the use of the Russian airspace costs United a little less than $4000 for a round trip to India. If you’re scheduled to travel on Chicago to Delhi flights or from Newark to Delhi this week or the next, you shall check with your travel agent or the airline for travel reconfirmation.

With effect from February 23, American Airlines and Delta Airlines started bypassing the Russian airspace for their flights to South Asian destinations. Undeniably, the rerouting of flights, as a result of avoiding the airspace of Russia, considerably increases the total travel time between North America and South Asia.

However, the #RussianUkraine conflict has little impact on Air India flights to North America as the airline has been rerouting flights to Newark, New York, Chicago and DC over the Hindu Kush since December 2021.

Like many other Indians, I traveled on one of the air bubble flights from USA to India in the first week of this month (October). I traveled on United Airlines during the international leg of my itinerary from Newark to Vijayawada (AP) via New Delhi, and the domestic leg was operated by Air India. I relied on Indian Eagle for the hassle-free booking of my trip in compliance with the Government of India’s travel regulations for international flyers.

Upon confirmation of my reservation on United Airlines’ air bubble flights, I received two forms to my registered email ID: one for entering India and the other for entering my home state. The forms needed me to furnish such details as my US contact number, a local contact number in India, my address in the home state, and my declaration that I would undergo 14 days of home quarantine at the final destination. It was easy to fill out the forms, an obligatory part of the new ‘normal’ travel to India. I also filled out a mandatory self-reporting form on Air Suvidha, a dedicated section of the New Delhi Airport website for international arrivals.

I did not register with the Indian Consulate in New York for my travel to India, as this requirement was scrapped by the Government of India in September 2020. Indian Eagle also confirmed in one of their travel news articles that registration with the Indian Embassy/Consulate is not required any more.

Covering your face with a quality mask is mandatory right from the entry to the departure airport until the exit from the destination airport. I kept on wearing a face mask and a face shield throughout my flight. The face shield was provided by United Airlines at the time of boarding. Overall, the flight was smooth and United Airlines’ inflight services were normal.

After I arrived at Delhi IGI Airport and got past the customs, I was asked whether I was COVID-19 negative to continue my onward travel to Vijayawada. You can either take a RT-PCR test 96 hours prior to your scheduled departure from the port of origin (first US airport in your itinerary) or get tested for COVID19 upon arrival at Delhi IGI Airport. As I did not carry a negative RT-PCR test report from Newark and my domestic connection time was as long as 11 hours, I chose to undergo a test at Delhi Airport itself.

I must say New Delhi International Airport has impressive COVID testing facilities. The officials took away my passport, provided me with a face shield, collected my swab, and gave the test report within 5 hours. I got back the passport too. While I waiting for the test result, I got access to a lounge and some refreshments. Social distancing was a must in the lounge. The testing and the lounge service cost me Rs. 5000 in total. As I tested negative, I was allowed to proceed to catch the domestic flight to Vijayawada. Travelers should carry minimum Rs 10,000 in cash or card.

The negative test report helped me get exempted from 7-day institutional quarantine in Vijayawada. At Delhi Airport, one of my hands was stamped indicating the date till which I needed to undergo home quarantine at the final destination. The ink was erased in two days.

Please note the customs and immigration clearance is taking longer than usual due to social distancing at New Delhi Airport. I truly appreciate the airports, the airlines and the respective governments for taking practical measures to make travel safer for us in the current unprecedented times. The most important tip I would like to give is that travelers should have a gap of 8-9 hours between their arrival at a major port of entry and their domestic connection in India. Brace yourself for the new normal of travel with a face mask on amid the pandemic.

Several incidents of discomfort, misconduct, ill-treatment and sexual abuse, which happened to minors traveling alone by air in the past few years, not only called for a reform in the airline policies and programs for unaccompanied minors, but also raised questions about the safety of minors during solo air travel.

In 2016, the conviction of two men on charges of groping minor girls who were traveling unaccompanied on US airlines sent jitters to parents of minors in the US and beyond. A 14-year-old boy, whose unaccompanied travel for a round trip on American Airlines was booked for an additional $300, was denied a decent, safe accommodation for the night in the event of a long flight delay.

In 2019, Delta Airlines’ codeshare partner, Korean Air ignored severe peanut allergy of two unaccompanied Indian American minors from Atlanta, Georgia, kicked them off the flight to Manila and left them stranded at South Korea International Airport.

Reports of such cases involving unaccompanied minors’ air travel have put forth two contradicting arguments: flight attendants are not babysitters or personal bodyguards on one hand, and airlines should be responsible for safety of unaccompanied minors on the other.

United Airlines news, unaccompanied minors travel, airline policy for unaccompanied minors

Giving a fresh lease to the arguments is the latest incident in which United Airlines allegedly put a 14-year-old minor on a wrong flight from Newark to Dusseldorf, Germany instead of Stockholm, Sweden.

The minor boy was scheduled to fly unaccompanied from Raleigh, North Carolina to Sweden via Newark, but he mistakenly boarded a flight to Dusseldorf rather than the scheduled flight to Stockholm due to the last-minute gate change at Newark.

The moment the unaccompanied minor found himself on the wrong flight, he informed the flight crew about his predicament. The actual SAS flight had departed Newark for Stockholm by the time he was let off to go back to catch it. The real trouble ensued when United Airlines accommodated the boy on a flight to Copenhagen, Denmark with a connection on to Stockholm, according to the minor’s parents and a Business Insider news report.

The boy’s mother said complainingly, “The flight to Stockholm from Newark via Copenhagen extended his unaccompanied travel additional 7 hours, which left him fatigued with severe jet lag.” She said further that she had no intimation from United Airlines. When she luckily got connected to an airline representative after nearly an hour, she was put on hold to her dismay.

“Being an experienced traveler, he did not panic. If he were 10 years old, the situation would have aggravated further for him. If you purchase an airline’s unaccompanied minor program for hundred dollars or more, the airline is liable for the unaccompanied minor’s safe travel from the origin to the destination. There’s a lot that needs to be fixed,” the boy’s parents remarked.

United Airlines apologized for the drawback in service and its inadequate attention to the unaccompanied minor, saying, “The safety and well-being of all of our customers is our top priority”, in a statement to Business Insider.

What’s Better: Airlines’ Unaccompanied Minor Plans or Companion for the Unaccompanied?

There are different airline policies, programs and fees for minors traveling unaccompanied. “Though some airlines have revised their unaccompanied minor policies over time, today’s parents trust a companion a lot more than an unaccompanied minor program. Undeniably, airlines charge exorbitant fees for their service to unaccompanied minors on ground and board. We don’t book unaccompanied minors’ travel online. Rather, we make sure to handpick and book the best itinerary from the airlines having the best unaccompanied minor policy. In addition, we manage a Facebook group to help our customers seek a reliable companion for their parents or children traveling alone between USA and India,” said the chief travel economist of IndianEagle.com, a leading air-ticketing agency for Indians in USA.

2019 might see a drop in airfares from USA to India, due to the mounting competition of airlines operating nonstop flights to India from USA, and the ongoing experiments with biofuel in commercial passenger aircraft.

Introducing a new route for nonstop flights to India and jumping into the fray with Air India, is United Airlines. One of the major US carriers, United Airlines announced to fly nonstop from San Francisco to New Delhi in 2019. Toronto, Melbourne, Amsterdam and Auckland are also earmarked on the map for United Airlines’ upcoming nonstop flights from San Francisco International Airport, one of the United hubs in the US.

December 5, 2019 is the tentative date for the launch of United Airlines’ nonstop flights to New Delhi from San Francisco (SFO). Good for Indians in California, who mostly travel back home by the year end! They will be privileged to compare between the Air India cheap fares and the United Airlines cheap tickets for nonstop SFO to DEL flights.

United airlines flights India, nonstop SFO to DEL flights, United Airlines cheap flights, cheap flights to Delhi

Los Angeles to Delhi and Houston to Delhi are among the busy routes between the United States and India. Demand for nonstop flights to New Delhi from those two US cities is also high. Leading Indian Americans, along with the governors of Los Angeles and Houston have already proposed Air India to commence nonstop service on these two routes. But, the national airline of India is yet to take a step forward. It would have been far better if United had announced nonstop service to Delhi from Houston and Los Angeles among its hubs.

However, the upcoming nonstop United flights SFO to Delhi hold some good for Indians in and around Los Angeles, since it takes them only 6 hours to reach San Francisco Airport by road. As San Francisco is a short flight away from Phoenix in Arizona, Nevada in Las Vegas, Utah in Salk Lake City, and Portland in Oregon, Indians residing in those US cities may take a liking to fly United Airlines from San Francisco to Delhi IGI airport.

Baggage Allowance for Nonstop SFO to DEL Flights: United Airlines vs Air India

Air India’s generous baggage allowance for economy travelers is the only disadvantage with United Airlines. Economy travelers flying nonstop Air India flights from USA to India can check in two pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 23 kgs or 50 lbs. But, only one check-in bag weighing not more than 23 kgs is allowed to economy passengers of United Airlines’ nonstop flights to Mumbai and Delhi from Newark Liberty international Airport. United Airlines’ economy baggage allowance will apply to the upcoming SFO to DEL nonstop service as well.

Extra Fee for Preferred Economy Seats on United Flights

Travelers flying United Airlines will have to pay up for their preferred seats in the economy cabin starting today, December 14. The additional fee for preferred seats, which are basically standard economy seats with no extra legroom behind the Economy Plus rows, will apply on all routes in the airline’s global network. Those unwilling to sit on the backside of aircraft prefer the seats behind the Economy Plus rows onboard.

No matter how cheap United Airlines economy flight tickets are; preferred economy seats will add to the fare. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines with similar economy seats have already been continuing the trend of charging extra for preferred seats in economy.

Air Canada Ups Vancouver to Delhi Nonstop Flights

United Airlines flights in Economy Class seem to be better than the same flights by other airlines. United Airlines brings back free meals and drinks to its Economy flights on international routes. Moreover, an open bar to serve free beer and wine in Economy Class is like icing on the cake.

Economy travelers will be enjoying free booze on several routes to Asia including USA to India, and some Latin American routes. United Airlines has already started serving free wine and beer on some of its long-haul transpacific and transatlantic flights except international flights on some short-haul routes which are operated for domestic travel. However, a surcharge is still levied on cocktails on all flights and on all routes.

Of late, United Airlines rolled out a seasonal craft beer on its flights worldwide and at its signature United Club lounges in the U.S. The beer ‘Samuel Adams Winter Lager’ is in the selection of beverages on board. Unlike regular beer, this wheat winter lager is bold, rich and spicy with ground cinnamon, ginger and orange peel.

“We do always listen to our customers and strive to make their flights more enjoyable,” said Jimmy Samartzis, United’s Vice President for food services and United Clubs. “With our fingers on the pulse of customers to know their likes and choices, we deliver restaurant-like meals cooked with the best ingredients, and serve complimentary alcoholic drinks like seasonal beer.”

Non-alcoholic passengers need not be disappointed. There is something special for them on all United Airlines flights. Since December 1, 2015, the airline has been serving Illy Coffee on all international flights. United Airlines partnered with the Italian Coffee brand to treat all passengers to free coffee on all international routes including USA to India. The same coffee will be served at all United Club lounges in 2016.

In addition to free beer and free coffee on all Economy flights across its international network, United Airlines has revised the menu of premium cabin meals and snacks for the flights departing San Jose, Bogota, Santo Domingo, and Port of Spain.
