After twelve months full of bated breath, following the announcement of its comeback to India, Delta Airlines revealed the date to resume nonstop flights to Mumbai from USA. Starting December 22, 2019, Delta flights will directly connect New York JFK and Mumbai BOM, much to the dismay of Indians in and around Atlanta, Georgia.

Since the first announcement of Delta Airlines’ return to India, it had highly been anticipated that Delta would resume its nonstop service from Atlanta to Mumbai, which was withdrawn in 2009 due to the stiff competition from the subsidized Middle East airlines. Atlanta being the headquarters of Delta Airlines was the primary reason for the anticipation.

Why did Delta choose New York over Atlanta? It is simply because the New York metropolitan area is home to the largest Indian American population and seven of the wealthiest counties in the United States. In addition, the New York metropolitan area is one of the most developed economic regions in the world, just like Mumbai being the financial capital of India.

Having Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, New York University and Rockefeller University among the best institutes in the world, New York has the largest concentrations of Indian students in the US.

Delta Air Lines is all set to make its comeback to India, with nonstop flights from the United States in 2019. Earlier this month, the Atlanta-based airline announced to return to India, with nonstop flights from its hubs in the United States, including Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX), Minneapolis (MSP), New York (JFK), Seattle (SEA), Salt Lake City (SLC), and New York (LGA). Initially, Delta will operate nonstop flights to Mumbai from USA in 2019. It may fly nonstop to other major Indian cities. Notably, Boston, Cincinnati and Raleigh are the focus cities for Delta Airlines’ flights within the USA.

Delta flights from New York to Mumbai (BOM) had been operated until the airline was forced to exit the Indian market due to highly competitive fares from the Middle East’s subsidized airlines including Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways in 2008. The recent open skies agreement between the US, the UAE and Qatar government, having resolved the issue of government subsidies for the Middle East airlines has removed the roadblock for direct Delta flights from USA to India.

In 2009, Delta Airlines withdrew its Atlanta to Mumbai service due to stiff competition from the Gulf airlines. Thereafter, Delta started flying to Mumbai from Amsterdam, the hub of its codeshare partner KLM and continued it until early 2015. American Airlines too rolled in its service to India in 2012. All these years, United Airlines has been the sole US carrier to have had its presence in the Indian market with daily flights from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai, having no competition from any other US airline.

Mumbai being a prime business destination in the Asia Pacific region is a good pick for the upcoming nonstop Delta flights from USA. Since business travelers prefer nonstop flights, Delta is expected to compete successfully with Air India’s Newark to Mumbai service and United Airlines’ Newark to Mumbai flights in terms of business class airfares to Mumbai.

Delta Airlines vs British Airways: Hand-baggage Only Fares

Both the airlines generously offer the best of economy travel class for hand-baggage only fares. British Airways is happy to allocate seats in advance, offer complimentary food & drink, and provide headphones as well as blankets to travelers booking basic economy fares for British Airways flights to and from USA. Delta Air Lines too promises the high quality economy cabin experience for the same fares.

But Delta Airlines’ basic economy fares come with a few limitations including no advance seat allotment and boarding by last zone. Besides, two or three or more basic economy fare-holding passengers traveling together on Delta flights may not be able to seat together. Families traveling on British Airways’ economy flights for hand-baggage only fares may be seated together, as per the airline’s spokesperson. If there is an adult with a child under 12 on the same booking, though for basic economy fares, they will be seated together in British Airlines’ economy travel cabin.

However, travelers booking hand-baggage only fares get access to the same inflight entertainment content as that for regular economy air tickets on both the airlines.

British Airways’ hand baggage allowance remains unchanged for basic economy fares. One handbag / laptop bag of maximum 23kg and one additional cabin bag of the same weight limit are permitted to travelers having British Airways’ hand-baggage only fares. On top of that, you can save on British Airways’ basic economy fares by using British Airways’ Avios (equivalent to reward points or frequent flyer miles). It’s just like a cherry on the cake. Furthermore, British Airways’ Executive Club members will get Avios and Tier Points on booking of basic economy fare tickets.

Interestingly, British Airways’ basic economy or hand-baggage only fares can be clubbed with other fare types. For example, basic economy fare for an outbound flight and standard economy fare for a return flight can be combined in a round trip booking with British Airways. The most recent codeshare partnership of Jet Airways, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic has opened a gamut of new ways connecting the United States and India for air travel via the UK. Jet Airways’ extended codeshare agreement with Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic has facilitated opening of more routes for flights between USA and India via London Heathrow.

Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic’s passengers from USA can catch Jet Airways flights to 17 destinations in India, including major cities, from London Heathrow. These 17 cities in India are Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Goa, Amritsar, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Pune, Vadodara, Coimbatore, Kozhikode, Indore, Mangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.

Jet Airways’ passengers from these Indian cities can catch codeshare flights from London Heathrow to nine cities in the US: Seattle, Boston, Atlanta, Portland, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Detroit, New York and Salt Lake City. All of these routes to USA from London are operated by Delta Air Lines.

For the first time, travelers are able to fly from USA to India via London with a single Delta flight ticket. Both Jet Airways and Delta Airlines coordinate with each other in service to passengers throughout their flights from the above-mentioned North American cities to India.

Over 11,000 people travel between USA and India daily, and tourism is flourishing between India, the UK and the US, according to Delta’s senior vice president for Europe, India, Africa and Middle East. In the history of aviation, Delta Air Lines is the first airline and the only US carrier to offer five different fare options to choose from. Let March 1 come, the five fare options will be available. Delta Air Lines’ five fare options to choose from are Delta One, First Class, Delta Comfort Plus, Main Cabin, and Basic Economy Fare.

The Basic Economy tickets will offer fewer flexibility options.

Fully-flat seats will be installed in the Delta One cabin, and the Delta Comfort Plus seats will be upgraded integrating a host of new features for the flights between New York and San Francisco in the spring. Of Delta Air Lines’ passengers, the Sky Miles Diamond and Platinum Medallion Members will be having complimentary access to upgrades in the First Class. They can avail of the same facility in the Delta Comfort Plus at the time of booking from March 1.

Inflight services at Delta One fares

With exclusive inflight services in the Delta One cabin, the flights on the long-haul international routes and the routes from New York to San Francisco / Los Angeles are going to offer a majestic experience. Delta One’s passengers will have the privilege to access Delta Sky Clubs and board the aircraft without any hassle. Delta One’s full flat-bed seats are upholstered with new quilted covers, and come with direct aisle access.

Delta Air Lines has added a new selection of wine to the menu for Business Elite passengers on the routes between the United States and London Heathrow. The new selection includes two red and two white wines from the wineries in France, Italy and California.
