Being home to the thriving Malayali Diaspora, the US experiences grand Onam celebrations every year, like Bathukamma, Durga Puja, Diwali, Holi, and Eid. From Onam Sadhya to Pookalam, the Onam festival rituals and traditions enrich America’s pluralistic landscape, where economist Gita Gopinath, FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, politician Pramila Jayapal, NetApp CEO George Kurian, and author Abraham Verghese are prominent names among Malayali Americans.

When is Onam 2026 in USA?

In the US, Onam festival will be celebrated from August 16 to 26, 2026, as in India. The ten-day harvest festival will begin with Atham on 16 August, while Thiruvonam, the final and most significant day of the celebration, falls on 26 August this year. Since Onan is not federal or state public holiday in the US, Indian-origin Malayali associations will celebrate Onam 2026 mostly on weekends before or after Thiruvonam, making it one of the biggest annual festivals for Keralites in America.

The countdown to America’s 250th anniversary is bringing some of the biggest celebrations in the US history. From the Great American State Fair D.C. to Philadelphia’s Wawa Welcome America Festival, the US is gearing up for landmark events. Among them, Sail250 (Sail4th 250) festivals stand out as unique spectacles of tall ships, naval vessels, maritime displays, waterfront concerts, and international crews from more than 30 countries, including India. It is a rare opportunity to witness America’s largest maritime event.

Host cities for Sail250 events in USA

  • Norfolk, Virginia
  • Baltimore, Maryland
  • New York & New Jersey (Sail4th 250)
  • Boston, Massachusetts

Why Sail250 events are great 4th July 2026 celebrations

Tall ship festivals have visited American ports before, but Sail250 in 2026 is unlike anything seen before. Historical sailing vessels, naval training ships, and military vessels from across the globe gather on US waters to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The maritime celebrations include international parade of sail, international naval review, military activities, firework displays, and family-friendly programs. Visitors can board many of these ships, meet sailors, and learn about maritime traditions.

Sail250 Virginia (Norfolk), June 19-23

The Sail250 Virginia celebrations begin with the arrival of international tall ships and naval vessels along the waterfront of Norfolk. During the five-day event, visitors board participating ships, meet sailors and cadets from around the world, enjoy waterfront concerts, cultural performances, educational exhibits, and family-friendly activities. As home to the world’s largest naval base, Norfolk also showcases military vessels and maritime traditions that have shaped the city’s history.

Sail250 Maryland (Baltimore), June 24-30

From June 24 to 30, Maryland is hosting Sail250 at Baltimore’s historic inner Harbor. It is a week-long maritime festival featuring public tall ship tours, crew meet-and-greets, waterfront entertainment, food vendors, and cultural programs. One of the biggest attractions is Baltimore’s Sail250 airshow by a fleet of military aircraft over the harbor. Visitors can also enjoy evening events, live music, educational exhibits, and opportunities to explore some of the world’s most famous sailing vessels.

Sail4th 250 New York & New Jersey, July 3-8

At the center of Sail250 events celebrating the fourth of July 2026 is Sail4th 250 in New York and New Jersey, from July 3 to 8. Millions of spectators are expected to gather along the waterfront during the six-day celebration. Here’s the Sail4th 250 schedule:

  • July 3: Arrival of tall ships and naval vessels, opening ceremonies, waterfront festivities, and public viewing opportunities.
  • July 4: The International Parade of Sail, the signature event of Sail4th 250. Dozens of tall ships will sail past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan in a breathtaking display. Independence Day celebrations and fireworks will follow later the day.
  • July 5-7: Public ship tours, crew interactions, cultural festivals, educational programs, military displays, and the International Naval Review featuring ships from participating nations.
  • July 8: Closing ceremonies and departure preparations as vessels begin their journey to Boston.

Sail250 Boston (Massachusetts), July 11-16

Boston, MA is the final major stop in the journey of Sail250 vessels and tall ships. Sail250 Boston is among the most awaited America250 celebrations in Massachusetts.

  • July 11: Grand Parade of Sail into Boston Harbor as the international fleet arrives.
  • July 12-15: Public ship tours, waterfront concerts, cultural performances, crew parades, educational exhibits, and family-friendly activities throughout the city.
  • July 16: Closing celebrations and farewell ceremonies marking the conclusion of the Sail250 voyage.

India’s INS Sudarshini among Sail250 ships USA

One of the most interesting highlights for Indian Americans is the participation of INS Sudarshini in America’s Sail250 events. Based in Kochi, Kerala, INS Sudarshini is a three-masted sail training ship of the Indian Navy. Commissioned in 2012, the vessel is used to train naval cadets in traditional seamanship, navigation, leadership, and teamwork. The 177-foot ship carries 20 sails and represents India at major international maritime events around the world.

During Sail4th 250, INS Sudarshini is expected to be docked at Brooklyn Bridge Park alongside vessels from other participating nations. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the ship up close and, during designated public visiting hours, board the vessel and interact with its crew. For Indian Diaspora, it will be a rare chance to see an Indian Navy sailing ship participate in one of the biggest international events ever organized in the USA.

Sail250 2026 Tickets, Registration, Entry Details

Most Sail250 events are free and open to the public. Many waterfront viewing areas, cultural programs, and public ship tours will not require an admission fee. However, advance registration may be required for certain tall ship tours due to expected demand, especially during Sail4th 250 in New York and New Jersey.

Some premium experiences, reserved viewing areas, harbor cruises, and special event packages will be ticketed. Sail Boston 2026, for example, is offering premium Parade of Sail viewing packages for visitors seeking enhanced experiences. You can check the official Sail250 website (www.sail250.org) for reservations and tickets.

Early registration is recommended for weekend visits given the enormous significance of the occasion – the US independence 250th anniversary.  On a typical day, the fair could see anywhere between 500,000 to 750,000 visitors, while July 4 alone may draw close to 2 million people to the National Mall, making it one of the biggest public gatherings in the US history.

Major Attractions of Great American State Fair 2026

110-Foot Ferris Wheel

The centrepiece of the event is a 110-foot giant Ferris Wheel located along the central axis of the National Mall. The 60-horse carousel will operate throughout the event, offering a classic fair experience. Though entry to the Great American State Fair is free, carousel rides will cost $5 per person, with proceeds supporting Smithsonian educational programs.

America250 Exhibition Hall

A huge 50,000-square-foot exhibition space will showcase “250 Years of American Stories,” featuring historic artifacts that represent key moments in US history, including George Washington’s sword, Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birmingham jail letter, Neil Armstrong’s moon suit, and 246 other significant items. The exhibition is free but requires timed-entry tickets.

Muslims in America are likely to celebrate Eid al-Fitr 2026 on Friday, March 20; it is subject to local moon sighting announcements across different cities and Islamic centers. Local mosques, moon-sighting committees and Islamic councils will confirm the exact date based on the new moon sighting, a traditional method followed by Muslim communities.

How is Eid celebrated in America

Eid al-Fitr celebrations in USA are equally festive and traditional like other occasions. Millions of Muslim immigrants across the US adhere to their traditions for Eid celebration, like special rituals, charity, family gatherings, and community events. They mark the end of Ramadan and celebrate the new moon sighting as Eid al-Fitr through special morning prayers in America too.

  • Congregational Prayers: The celebration typically begins with special morning prayers held at mosques, community centres, parks, and convention spaces.
  • Takbeer and Duas: Attendees recite takbeer (praises of God) and listen to sermons before exchanging the festive greeting, “Eid Mubarak.”
  • Zakat al-Fitr: Charity given before prayers ensures all members of the community can celebrate with dignity.
  • Family Festivities: Families share festive meals, exchange gifts, and visit relatives, while local bazaars offer traditional food, clothing, and cultural goods.

Although Eid is not a federal public holiday in the US, several states issued official Eid proclamations. In cities like New York, public schools observe Eid al-Fitr as an official school holiday.

Where Eid celebrations are grand in America

While Eid is celebrated in every state with a Muslim population, the following states consistently host large-scale Eid al-Fitr prayers, festivals, and civic recognitions:

  • New York – Approx. 724,000 Muslims
  • California – Approx. 504,000 Muslims
  • Illinois – Approx. 474,000 Muslims
  • New Jersey – Approx. 322,000 Muslims
  • Texas – Approx. 313,000 Muslims
  • Michigan – Approx. 242,000 Muslims

  • Massachusetts – Approx. 132,000 Muslims

Recognition of Eid al-Fitr in America

Given the strength, cultural significance, and contributions of the American Muslim community, the Eid festival in USA has gained recognition over the years. The recognition starts from the White House, though Eid al-Fitr is not yet among the federal holidays in the US. The tradition of issuing Eid greetings to Muslim Americans continues at the White House. However, several states, school districts, and city mayors have recognized Eid celebration in USA through official proclamations. The Presidential greeting on Eid emphasizes religious freedom and inclusion of Muslim immigrants into the American fabric.

State-level Recognition

  • Washington became the first U.S. state to officially recognize both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha on its state calendar.
  • Governors in states such as Michigan and California regularly issue official Eid proclamations.
  • States including New Jersey and Illinois have passed legislation allowing public institutions and schools to formally recognize Eid.

Is Eid 2026 a public school holiday in USA?

Eid al-Fitr is a holiday in several school districts across the United States. New York City public schools, Houston Independent School District in Texas, Minneapolis public schools in Minnesota, Howard County Public School system in Maryland, more than 65 school districts in New Jersey, Miami Dade School Board in Florida, Hilliard City Schools in Ohio, Philadelphia School District, and Dearborn and Detroit public schools in Michigan have Eid as a holiday on their calendars.

Vijay and Rashmika arrived in Udaipur separately to maintain privacy. Guests were welcomed with personalized hampers placed inside their villas, including handwritten notes from the couple, curated sweets, and wedding memorabilia. The bride, the groom and their families bonded over a welcome dinner in the evening.

The guests had light-hearted fun moments over curated dishes in a musical setting.

February 25: VIROSH Haldi & Sangeet

Pastel floral décor will define the ambience for Vijay and Rashmika’s haldi, one of the pre-wedding ceremonies. Their family members and close friends will be seen participating in rituals. It will be followed by the Rajasthani-style mehendi ceremony amid live folk music and dance. The sangeet night will add a zing to the pre-wedding celebration, with close friends performing choreographed dance numbers dedicated to the couple’s journey.

February 26: Grand wedding ceremony

The couple will tie the knot in an intimate ceremony attended by around 100 guests. The VIROSH wedding venue will have a minimal yet elegant temple-inspired décor. The rituals will be performed in the presence of their families. It is reported that two wedding ceremonies will be performed — one following Telugu customs and the other according to Karnataka traditions—to honor their individual culture.
