04/22/2026

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of American Independence. The fourth of July 2026 is a rare milestone – a once-in-a-lifetime event for the world’s oldest democracy. The Trump government started the Freedom 250 celebrations in 2025 – which will continue through the year 2026. The Great American State Fair is the biggest of all Freedom 250 events in Washington D.C. this year. It is a 16-day free family event.

What is Great American State Fair?

The Great American State Fair is a large-scale cultural extravaganza that would run for 16 days in the US Capital. It brings together all 50 US states and 6 territories at one place through dedicated pavilions showcasing diverse culture, food, and traditions. In the heart of Washington DC, it will provide a wholesome, immersive experience of America’s pluralistic fabric over themed areas, exhibition zones, food corners, live performances, and a 110-foot Ferris Wheel. It will give you a micro picture of the US.

To attend the Great American State Fair 2026 in D.C., you must register online through the official Freedom 250 website. You need to fill basic details like name, age, city; thereafter you will receive a confirmed entry time slot. Early registration is recommended for weekend visits given the enormous significance of the occasion – the US independence 250th anniversary.  On a typical day, the fair could see anywhere between 500,000 to 750,000 visitors, while July 4 alone may draw close to 2 million people to the National Mall, making it one of the biggest public gatherings in the US history.

Major Attractions of Great American State Fair 2026

110-Foot Ferris Wheel

The centrepiece of the event is a 110-foot giant Ferris Wheel located along the central axis of the National Mall. Each of its climate-controlled gondolas can accommodate multiple people, and offer panoramic views from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Rides will be free but require you to get a confirm time slot through freedom250.org or onsite kiosks.

Smithsonian National Carousel

A restored Smithsonian carousel, originally built in 1947, will return to the D.C. National Mall after a major $2.3 million restoration. The 60-horse carousel will operate throughout the event, offering a classic fair experience. Though entry to the Great American State Fair is free, carousel rides will cost $5 per person, with proceeds supporting Smithsonian educational programs.

America250 Exhibition Hall

A huge 50,000-square-foot exhibition space will showcase “250 Years of American Stories,” featuring historic artifacts that represent key moments in US history, including George Washington’s sword, Abraham Lincoln’s stovepipe hat, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birmingham jail letter, Neil Armstrong’s moon suit, and 246 other significant items. The exhibition is free but requires timed-entry tickets.

Freedom Stage for live concerts and cultural performances

At the Great American State Fair 2026, the main performance venue between the Smithsonian Castle and the Hirshhorn Museum will host ceremonies, cultural performances, and concerts for 16 days. It features seating for 8,000 people, with standing room for an additional 25,000.
