Great news for Indian nationals! Within six months of the announcement made in January 2026, Germany fulfilled its promise to India by officially ending the airport transit visa requirement for Indian Passport holders, effective June 3, 2026. Indians can now travel to USA, India or any other non-Schengen country via Frankfurt or Munich without an airport transit visa (ATV). Earlier, only Indians holding a valid visa or residence permit of some countries, like USA and Canada, were exempted from Germany’s airport transit visa rules.

Germany scraps transit visa for Indians. What does it mean?

Starting June 3, 2026, Indians don’t need airport transit visa for Frankfurt or Munich layovers in their itineraries. It means less paperwork. The lesser the paperwork, the lesser the hassle. Germany’s visa-free transit facility mostly benefits Indians from USA and Canada. Despite having an expired Canadian or US visa, Indians can now travel to India via Germany, without an airport transit visa for Frankfurt or Munich. Inarguably, many Indians from North America visit the home country for visa renewals. However, there is a catch.

Germany’s visa-free transit facility has restrictions

Germany is allowing Indians to transit visa-free only on airside. Precisely, they must remain within the international transit area of Frankfurt or Munich airport during a layover. If the airline operating your itinerary requires you to change terminals and go through immigration (passport control) for a connecting flight at Frankfurt or Munich, you must need a regular Schengen visa. Specific events, like self-transfer and baggage recheck-in, demand a regular Schengen visa at German airports.

That’s why we strongly recommend that travelers, who book Indian Eagle deals for Lufthansa flights, to review their itineraries for whether there is terminal change or self-transfer, or check directly with the airline whether they need a regular Schengen visa, within 24 hours of the ticket issuance (booking confirmation),” said Dheeraj Duvvuru, CEO of IndianEagle.com.

Can Indians enter the Schengen area without a German visa?

A big ‘NO’. Germany’s transit visa rules for Indians have relaxed only for airside layovers. Entry to the Schengen area is still restricted for Indian nationals transiting through German airports. Regardless of their US/Canadian visa or PR, Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa to enter Germany. Check Lufthansa’s Munich stopover program and its visa requirement for Indians.

German visa rules for itineraries with two Schengen layovers

If your US-India itinerary includes two Schengen layovers or change of airports in Germany, you must require a regular Schengen visa. It is a must for Indian nationals to transit from one Schengen airport to another Schengen airport in the same country or in a different country. Rakesh, among IndianEagle’s customers in the US, shares his experience of traveling through Frankfurt and Munich, two Schengen layovers in Germany.

Do Indians with a Green Card need a Schengen visa for Lufthansa flights via two Schengen airports?

Yes. Neither a valid US visa nor permanent residency status exempts you from the Schengen Visa rules. A Schengen visa is one of the most important travel documents required for hassle-free travel on Lufthansa flights via two Schengen airports in Germany.

Big breaking news for Indians traveling through France! Within just two months of a 6-month pilot trial for visa-free transit in Paris for Indian nationals, France no longer requires airport transit visa (ATV) from Indians. Effective 10 April 2026, you don’t need ATV to transit through French airports, including Paris CDG Airport while flying to USA, Canada, India, London, or any non-Schengen country. Notably, France became the first Schengen country to make Paris Airport layovers transit-visa free for Indians.

France ends airport transit visa for Indians: airside or landside?

Indians don’t need a transit visa for airside layovers at Paris CDG and other airports in France. Airside transit means they must remain within the international transit area during a layover and they can’t pass through immigration control. If your itinerary for US to India flights via Paris has a long layover, to say 8 hours or more, you can’t exit the transit area and go through the passport control at CDG airport.

Indians don’t need US or Canadian Visa for visa-free transit in France

Your Canadian or US visa expired? Don’t have a Schengen visa? No worries! You can connect to India or any other destination through Paris CDG without an airport transit visa (ATV). Previously, visa-free Paris transit was limited to Indian nationals with US/Canadian Visa or residence permit (PR). As France has officially eliminated airport transit visa for Indians, Air France and its partner airlines including Delta Air Lines can’t deny boarding to Indians in USA or Canada for not having a French transit visa or a valid US/Canadian visa.

Indians may need a regular Schengen visa in specific events

Being a Schengen country, France is very strict about immigration control, landside transit, and entry into the Schengen territory. Irrespective of their Canadian/US visa status, Indian passport holders can only access and remain in the airside transit area without an airport transit visa. If your itinerary for Delta or Air France flights involves terminal change requiring passport control at CDG Airport, you need a regular Schengen Visa. You must check the itinerary and its transit rules before booking your international flight tickets.

“Unlike Germany that is yet to eliminate airport transit visa for Indians, France took this move coinciding with high demand for international travel on Air France, KLM, and Delta Airlines bypassing the Middle East airspaces. Hope, Germany will soon fulfil its promise to India by officially making Munich and Frankfurt layovers transit-visa free for Indians” said Dheeraj Duvvuru, CEO of IndianEagle.com, the most trusted travel-booking partner of Indians and Americans.

The day following the New Year celebrations, parts of Europe including the Netherlands, woke up to travel chaos caused by heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures. A thick blanket of snow brought operations to a standstill at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a popular transit hub in Europe for flights from USA to India and beyond. Hundreds of flights to and from AMS Schiphol Airport have been grounded leaving travelers stranded in and out of Europe.

KLM Dutch Airlines alone cancelled 300 flights on Monday, 5 January, with the harsh winter weather being anticipated to continue in the coming days. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport’s international transit area fell short of accommodation for travelers returning to North America from India and other countries after a holiday break. Among the stranded passengers, Indians could neither exit the airport nor the airside transit area to seek better facilities, as it usually requires a visa.

Do Indians need a Visa to leave Schiphol Airport during a layover?

Yes, Indians require a visa to enter the Schengen zone outside Amsterdam International Airport in the Netherlands. It is a regular Schengen Visa. Even a valid US visa or Green Card (LPR) is not considered a substitute for this mandatory requirement. Non-US citizens are mostly under the wrong impression that they can exit the Schiphol Airport terminal during a long layover or delayed connection, just because they have a US/Canadian PR or visa.

If Indians, among the affected passengers of Air France-KLM flights, had a short-stay Schengen Visa, they could have managed decent accommodation outside the airport while in transit.

Do Indians need an Airport Transit Visa for Amsterdam Schiphol?

Usually, Indian Passport holders do not need an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for airside connection or transfer at Schiphol AMS Airport. However, they may need a transit visa for the Netherlands in specific events listed below:

  • US-India flight itineraries involving a change of airports in the Netherlands, or two Schengen layovers like Paris and Amsterdam, demand a transit visa. In such events, Indian nationals are required to clear passport control during transit.
  • If your bags are not checked through to the destination, to say from departure in the US to arrival in India or vice versa, you have to claim the checked baggage and recheck it for the connecting flight at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. A Netherlands Airport Transit Visa can save you in situations like this.
  • Generally, low-cost or regional airlines do not manage checked baggage transfer between two connecting flights, though at the same airport. If your multi-city trip from USA to India via the Netherlands involves a low-cost airline, especially in transit, you may need an Airport Transit Visa to collect and recheck your baggage.
  • If your itinerary requires you to switch terminals through passport control at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, you need an Airport Transit Visa to exit the airside transit area.

Do US citizens need a Schengen Visa to exit Amsterdam Airport during a layover?

The Netherlands allows US citizens to enter the Schengen area without any visa during a layover in Amsterdam. US citizens must have a valid passport with sufficient blank pages (at least 3 months after departure from the Netherlands) to be eligible for visa-free entry to Amsterdam or any part in the Schengen Area. US passport holders can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days over a period of 180 days in a year.

Usually, Indians with a Green Card or valid US visa like H1B, don’t need a transit visa for Abu Dhabi. Even if your US visa has expired, you can book Etihad flight tickets from USA to India and spend a reasonable layover at Abu Dhabi without requiring any UAE visa. This is a great convenience of flying through the Middle East vs Europe. However, an Abu Dhabi transit visa may help you out during unprecedented events like a long transit layover.

Abu Dhabi transit visa, UAE tourist visa, UAE visa on arrival, Abu Dhabi airport visa on arrival

When the Middle East conflict was escalating in and after mid-June, multi-country airspace closure caused international departure delays and connecting flight cancellations. Thousands of transit passengers, including Indians from the US and other countries, got stuck at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha airports for unusually long hours. The situation became worse especially on 23 June. Etihad Airways could provide accommodation at its partner hotels outside the terminal only to the passengers having a transit visa.

Among the passengers of Etihad Airways flights from Chicago to Mumbai, New York to Kochi, and Boston to Chennai, were an Indian family with two kids. Their onward flight to Abu Dhabi was actually on 18 June, but it was rescheduled on 20 June, and the layover at Zayed International Airport extended to 8 hours from the actual 3 hours.

At Chicago ORD Airport, they were informed that they would get complimentary accommodation during the long layover. But at Abu Dhabi Airport, they learned that only those having a UAE tourist visa or transit visa could exit the terminal and access the hotel. While the UAE’s entry visa on arrival can be obtained in real time for a fee of AED 100 (approx. $27) per person, an Abu Dhabi transit visa must be arranged in advance.

As they were a group of four travelers, the visa on arrival would additionally incur them a little more than $100 in total. The situation was so overwhelming that they chose to keep away from serpentine lines for the visa on arrival at Abu Dhabi Airport. They received vouchers for an economy lounge which was no way better than a waiting area. They just walked away and got into a business class lounge at their own expense.

This brings into light the importance of having a transit visa even for Abu Dhabi or Dubai in the Middle East. Precisely, having a transit visa is like “better safe than sorry”.

UAE Visa on Arrival vs Abu Dhabi Transit Visa for Indian Nationals

When a scheduled layover becomes longer than usual, Etihad Airways like other airlines provides accommodation at Zayed International Airport. However, when accommodation options get exhausted within the airport, transit passengers get access to the airline’s hotel partners outside the airport. In such unexpected events as the one explained above, only the UAE visa on arrival at Abu Dhabi Airport works for Indian nationals.

The entry visa on arrival in UAE for Indians costs AED 100 and comes with 14-day validity. But there is a catch. Only Indians holding a valid visa or residence permit of USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand are eligible for it. If you travel through Abu Dhabi or Dubai with your expired US visa or Green Card, you are not eligible for the visa on arrival.

Indians are eligible for the Abu Dhabi Transit Visa for 48 hours or 96 hours only if they go for Abu Dhabi stopover programs while flying with Etihad. Or, your US-India flight itinerary must have a layover of at least 8 hours in Abu Dhabi for a 48-hour transit visa. If the Abu Dhabi airport layover in your itinerary is shorter than 8 hours, you are not eligible for a transit visa in the UAE.

Many Indians still confuse between the transit visa and the visa on arrival for Abu Dhabi. While transit visa must be applied for in advance, the visa on arrival is instantly available at Zayed International Airport for eligible Indians. Both visas give entry to the UAE, but their eligibility criteria are different.

Like many other Indians, Rakesh is traveling to India with his family this summer (in July). He proudly holds a Green Card for his permanent residency in the land of American Dream. He had booked his flight tickets from Seattle to Bengaluru with Lufthansa when Indian Eagle was offering flight discounts celebrating Women’s Day 2025 through March. After having secured a good deal for the summer travel, they got busy making a bucket list of things to do and see in and around Bengaluru this time.

Schengen visa for transit in Germany, transit via Frankfurt and Munich, US to India travel via Germany

Their round-trip itinerary has two Schengen airport layovers – Frankfurt and Munich in Germany – which requires a regular Schengen Visa for smooth transit. We had sent him the booking confirmation email and Lufthansa flight tickets with a note that the itinerary he purchased may require a short Schengen visa or airport transit visa in Germany. It seems that he overlooked the note as he was under the impression that Green Card holders are exempted from this visa requirement in the Schengen area.

He woke up to this requirement for his journey through Frankfurt and Munich, when a user post in some Facebook community group caught his attention. In the post, an Indian from San Francisco shared his ordeal of being denied boarding by Lufthansa for not having a Schengen Visa for his flight itinerary similar to Rakesh’s. Taken aback by the post, Rakesh took no time to call Indian Eagle’s customer helpline and confirm whether a regular Schengen Visa is required for transit via two airports in Germany.

He got into a dilemma over whether he should cancel their reservation with Lufthansa and book a new round trip with one-stop flights from Seattle to Bengaluru with some other airline, or apply for a short Schengen Visa. Cancelling the scheduled travel would have incurred him a hefty airline fee for each of four travelers in the booking, though the itinerary was refundable. On top of that, a new booking would cost him more than what he paid (minus the Women’s Day discount) in March.

After two days of deliberation, he chose to apply for a regular Schengen Visa. It was the third week of April; thankfully, not too late to meet the transit visa requirement for their US-India round trip with Lufthansa. Many travelers like Rakesh are still unaware of this critical visa rule involving transit between two Schengen airports in Germany. Most of them realize this late, and thus have no other option than cancelling their travel in the eleventh hour and seeking last-minute flight tickets with deals.

Wondering if you need a transit visa for your US-India travel via London Heathrow or Gatwick airport? The answer is straightforward ‘No’, but there are finer details that require your attention. Traveling on British Airways flights from USA to India via London may be a disadvantage for some US visa holders and Green Card users among Indian nationals. Thus, knowing when a London Heathrow layover in your itinerary requires an airport transit visa helps a lot.

UK transit visa details, transit visa for London Heathrow, flying to India via London, transit layover at London Heathrow airport
PC: X.com/HeathrowAirport

If you hold a valid US/Canadian visa or a valid Green Card/Canadian PR, airside transit during a layover at London Heathrow does not require any visa. Landside transit (immigration clearance) at London Heathrow Airport or a change of connecting airports in the UK demands a transit visa, irrespective of your US/Canadian visa or Green Card validity status. The same is applicable to those holding a visa of Australia or New Zealand.

However, there is a condition. Among passengers of British Airways or Virgin Atlantic flights to India, valid US visa or Green Card holders can have visa-free airside transit at London Heathrow if they have a confirmed onward flight from the same airport on the same day.

How to know whether my itinerary has airside or landside transit at LHR Airport?

It is wise to check itineraries in detail for layover information before booking your flight tickets to India from USA via London. If an itinerary entails a change of airports, to say from Heathrow to Manchester or Gatwick, for the connecting leg, you must have a transit visa for landside transit that involves immigration checks. If your USA-India flight itinerary has a layover longer than 10 hours at LHR Airport, it is recommended that you contact the airline and check whether you need a transit visa.

I am flying to India via London Heathrow where I have a layover longer than 12 hours. Do I need an airport transit visa?

Generally, you don’t need an airport transit visa to spend a long layover airside at London Heathrow if you have a valid Green Card, H1B visa, B2 visa, or any other valid US visa. Having a transit visa is a relief in case you need to exit the airside transit area and enter the terminal during an overnight layover at Heathrow Airport. It is advised to contact the airline for transit visa specifics in the event of an overnight layover, as some airports do not allow overnight stay in the airside transit area.

My US visa/Green Card has expired, but I have an I-797 approval letter. Do I still need a London airport transit visa for connecting to India?

It’s important to note that both non-immigrant and immigrant US visas need to be renewed periodically. Some Green Cards are valid for 2 to 10 years. If a Green Card, O1 visa, or H1B visa expires, Indians may still be eligible for transit-visa-free layover at London Heathrow if they have an I-797 approval letter authorizing a legal extension of their immigrant or non-immigrant status.

However, I-797 approval letters come in different forms (I-797A, B, C, and D), depending on your petition type and legal status in the US. These specifics may be too complex to understand and follow for the airline crew and the airport staff. Additionally, some airlines maintain a hard stance on transit visa requirements and tend to overlook I-797 approval letters.

Unless you travel on nonstop flights between USA and India, checking the citizenship-based visa requirements for transit in a third country is a prerequisite for international travel. This simple step can avert unexpected events such as denial of boarding. If you are scheduled to travel between India and USA via Canada, you should know whether you need to have a transit visa for Canada.

Many Indian nationals are unaware of Canada’s transit visa requirement for their travel on Air Canada flights between USA and India. On top of that they are under the misconception that their US visa authorizes them to travel to USA or India via Canada without a transit visa. The fact is that only US citizens and Green Card holders are eligible for visa-free transit in Canada.

Canadian transit visa for Indians, Do Indians need transit visa for Canada, Canada transit visa rules for USA to India travel
PC: Vashistimmigration.com

Do all Indian citizens require a Canadian transit visa?

India is listed among the visa-required countries by Canada. Hence, Indian passport holders are required to apply for a Canadian transit visa before they google Air Canada’s best deals for USA-India flights. According to Canada’s immigration rules, you need a transit visa if

  • You are taking a connecting flight to/from USA at an airport in Canada
  • Your international flight stops at a Canadian airport on its way to India/USA
  • Your US-India itinerary has a layover (less than 48 hours) at any Canadian airport

Do Indians holding a US visa require a transit visa for a layover/connecting flight in Canada?

Yes, they do. A transit visa is mandatory for all Indian citizens for transiting through Canada on the way to USA or India. This rule has nothing to do with whatever US visa you have, except Green Card. Be it an H1B, H4, B1/B2, F1/F2 or L1/L2 visa, you must have a Canadian transit visa for traveling on Air Canada between USA and India. The only exception is given for Indians with American citizenship who can transit through Canada visa-free.

Transit visa vs tourist visa for Indians traveling through Canada

A Canadian transit visa is valid for a maximum of 1 or 2 entries and it permits Indians to transit through the airports in Canada for less than 48 hours without leaving the transit zone. If you wish to leave the airport during the layover or if the connection time is longer than 48 hours, then you need a visitor visa. So, kindly note that a transit visa is considered invalid for itineraries with long layovers exceeding 48 hours.

Interestingly, Canada’s transit visa is issued free of charge, and you need to apply at least a few weeks before your planned travel from USA to India via Canada.

In a shocking incident dated 22 June 2022, four Indian travelers including two students faced denial of boarding on flights to USA from Bengaluru Kempegowda Airport. They were all Indian passport holders with itineraries having two Schengen layovers – Paris and Amsterdam – in Europe. Air France that operated the first international leg – from Bengaluru to Paris – did not onboard them due to their incomplete visa arrangement for the transit between two Schengen airports. The airline turned down their request for boarding. All of the four travelers were sent back home.

Some travelers end up meeting the same fate as the above for not having the right visa required for international flights between USA and India via Frankfurt and Munich in Germany. Itineraries having two Schengen layovers in Germany have the same visa requirement as itineraries involving two Schengen countries, for Indian passport holders. As a rule of thumb, Indian nationals must have a regular Schengen visa for hassle-free connection/transit via two airports in the Schengen zone.

‘I am an Indian national with a valid Green Card. Do Green Card holders need a Schengen visa for Air France-KLM or Lufthansa flights via two Schengen airports?

Yes, they do. Despite holding a Green Card or Canadian PR, you require a valid Schengen visa (C Type) to avert denial of boarding on USA to India flights with more than one Schengen layover. Indians having the LPR status in Canada or the US, are not immune to this particular visa rule.

I will travel on Air France-KLM codeshare flights from Houston to Delhi this summer. Do I need a Schengen visa even though the itinerary is operated by two codeshare partners?

In such itineraries, Air France operates the Houston to Paris flight, and the Paris to Amsterdam to New Delhi leg is operated by KLM. Though these two airlines are codeshare partners, it does not immunize you against the Schengen visa rule for Indian passport holders. The same is applicable to Indian nationals scheduled to travel on flights operated by Lufthansa and its partner SWISS Airlines via Frankfurt/Munich and Zurich respectively. Since Both Frankfurt/Munich and Zurich fall in the Schengen region of Europe, any itinerary having connection between two Schengen airports or countries requires you to have a regular Schengen visa (C Type).

Let’s assume that your flight from Atlanta to Mumbai is operated only by Lufthansa. You need a regular Schengen visa even for Lufthansa-only flights to India/USA if the itinerary has two Schengen airport layovers in Germany. Refer to the below Lufthansa itinerary from IndianEagle.com, a most trusted air-ticketing partner of Indians in America.

Can I transit through more than one Schengen country or more than one airport within the Schengen area, with an airport transit visa?

Precisely, a big NO. A Schengen airport transit visa does not allow Indians to transfer from one airport (Frankfurt) to the other (Munich) within Germany, or transfer from one Schengen area (Paris) to the other (Amsterdam). Having a regular Schengen visa is compulsory for hassle-free, safe travel between USA and India via two Schengen area airports.

An airport transit visa is basically required by the nationals of certain countries which are not eligible for visa-free transit even through one Schengen area airport.

Do Indians need a transit visa for Japan while traveling to USA or back to India? This is a common query by our customers booking JAL flights between USA and India. “No,” to say in short. Neither Indian passport holders nor US citizens need a visa for transit in Japan.

Japan's transit visa requirements, Do Indians need transit visa for Japan, Do US citizens need visa for Japan

If you are an Indian citizen with the itinerary having transfer between two airports in Japan, you must have a transit visa. Japan requires you to have a transit visa for catching a connecting flight at another airport after the first leg of the itinerary ends at Tokyo Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport. Even though you do not have to travel to another airport for the connecting flight, you may need to comply with Japan’s transit visa requirements, if there’s no connecting flight on the same day.

If there is no connecting flight to USA from Narita or Haneda International Airport on the same day, you may be required to undergo immigration procedures to leave the transit or departure (airside) area of the connecting airport in Japan. You need a transit visa to step out of the airport for anything – city sightseeing or catching up with a friend. In case you wish to spend time in the departure or transit area until the next connecting flight, no transit visa is required.

A transit visa is mandatory if you plan a stopover in Japan while traveling to USA or any other country via Tokyo, Narita, or Kansai Airport. The transit visa does not allow any business-centric activity during a stopover. A Japan transit visa is valid for 15 days; the validity is not extendable. Usually, it takes 5 days to get a transit visa issued from the date of the application receipt. If Indian passport holders have a tourist visa to Japan, you do not need a transit visa to travel through Tokyo or Narita International Airport or Kansai Airport, Osaka.

Do US citizens need a transit visa for Japan? US nationals and citizens do not need a tourist visa or transit visa for Japan. They need only a valid passport and confirmed onward/return flight tickets for a visit of maximum 90 days in Japan. The US passport must be valid until they exit Japan after a short stay.
