Needless to say that the Charminar is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Hyderabad India! This historical monument is the first thing to see in the City of Pearls. Why the Charminar was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 is one of the interesting facts of Hyderabad. The global icon of Hyderabad holding on to the stories of the bygone eras stands tall in the Old City of Nawabs. Though it stands silent, its eloquence is felt in the buzz of life all around. The life around the Charminar never ceases to throb as there are many things to see and do. Shopping for bangles, binging on biryani, sipping Irani Chai, grabbing bites of Osmania biscuits, visiting the Chowmahalla Palace, and clicking photographs are some of the things to do around the Charminar. Those who are scheduled to travel to Hyderabad from USA and other countries can take a cue from this infographic on how to make the most of a day trip to the Charminar this Ramadan

India is gearing up for the Independence Day celebration. With 15th August around the corner, Indians or Indian-origin communities across geographies have been preparing for blissful moments of hoisting the Tricolor with immense pride. When we look at the waving Tricolor, we hold our heads high and feel proud of our nationality irrespective of what corner of the world we are in. The Tricolor, India’s national flag is not just a piece of cloth. It is a fabric of peace, prosperity, patriotism, harmony, history, vigor and victory.

Bengeri Karnataka, Indian women at work, making of Tricolor Bengeri, Indian National Flag facts

A small village in India has been weaving fabric for the Tricolor for years. The charkhas and handlooms at Tulasigeri in Bagalkot district of Karnataka are never at rest. They are always in use for weaving the khadi cloth required for making the national flag of India. The flags that are hoisted at the Red Fort in Delhi, and Indian government offices as well as Indian embassies across the world are weaved and stitched at Tulasigeri village in Karnataka.

The unit of khadi weavers in Tulasigeri village is known as Khadi Sangha. The Khadi Sangha apart, Karnataka houses India’s only authorized national flag manufacturing unit, the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha. Located at Bengeri in Hubballi district, the national flag manufacturing unit is certified by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission of India. It operates in compliance with the parameters set by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

At the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha, it is the women who have been manufacturing and supplying flags to the whole country since 2006. Though dissatisfied with the inadequate wages, the women relentlessly work throughout the year out of their immense pride in making the Indian national flag which Indian soldiers fight for and which millions of people respect.

In 1957, freedom fighter Venkatesh Magadi and his accomplices founded the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha and brought several units of khadi weavers as affiliates under one roof. These khadi-weaving units, including the one in Tulasigeri village have been doing their best in promoting and popularizing khadi.

The Khadi Sangha of Tulasigeri village in Karnataka was assigned the responsibility of weaving cloth for the Tricolor in 2005 given its efforts in popularizing khadi. Since then, it has been handlooming the special khadi cloth for the national flag of India. It has woven cloth for about three crore flags for Indian government offices in the past 13 years.

The khadi cloth for the Tricolor is brought from Tulasigeri village to the national flag manufacturing unit at Bengeri in Hubballi, where the cloth undergoes a meticulous treatment for dyeing and screen printing before it is cut and stitched into what we salute. The Indian national flag is manufactured in nine sizes measuring from 0.5×0.3 feet (the smallest) to 21×14 feet (the biggest).

The women at the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha in Bengeri unerringly adhere to the Flag Code of India 2002 and the guidelines framed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. They ensure the exact measurements, colors, size and thread count of flags. Any defect in any of the flags manufactured here is a legally punitive offence, which is subject to a hefty fine or imprisonment.

There are umpteen stories of Tihar Prison or Tihar Jail in India. Other than the most popular tourist attractions across India, Tihar Jail near New Delhi is a most talked-about place for its high-profile prisoners, including Chhota Rajan, Charles Sobhraj, Suresh Kalmadi, Subrata Roy, Lalu Yadav and Sanjay Gandhi.

Many people wonder how Tihar Jail rooms are, how Tihar Jail prisoners live, how Tihar Jail conditions are, what a typical day in the life of a prisoner in Tihar Prion is, how the inside view of Tihar Prison is, etc. Those wondering about the life in Indian prisons will soon be able to live the typical Tihar Jail experience to their satisfaction. Yes, you read it right.

India’s largest and highest security prison, Tihar Jail will reportedly open its doors to tourists and visitors in the next few months. The Tihar Jail tourism project titled ‘Feel Like Jail’ includes a number of facilities for the guests willing to spend a day or two within the 400-acre prison complex. The guests will have to pay for the Tihar jail experience and work like the prisoners during their stay. They will be given the typical prison uniform which the Tihar Jail inmates wear.

Tihar Jail life, Tihar jail India, Indian prison tourism, Tihar Prison Delhi

There is nothing to be surprised. Foreign tourists are taking cheap flights to India for a similar prison tourism program, ‘Feel the Jail’ in the state of Telangana. The Sangareddy Prison, a 220-year-old heritage jail which is nearly 70 kms from Hyderabad International Airport, entertains guests with a unique experience of the typical life in Indian prisons.

Built during the Nizam regime in the then princely state of Hyderabad, the Sangareddy Prison charges INR 500 per guest for a day. The Telangana Prison Department’s ‘Feel the Jail’ tourism program drew global attention to India in January 2018 when two Malaysian tourists took flights to Hyderabad, spent 2 days behind the bars and experienced the life of a prisoner in the Sangareddy Prison. During their stay, they did all mundane jobs like gardening and cleaning. They were given the simple Indian meals which usually prisoners cook and eat.

However, the inside view of Tihar Jail is a larger-than-life picture which one cannot imagine without any experience of the life in Tihar prison complex. With nearly 15,500 inmates, Tihar Jail is the most populated prison in India and the biggest prison in Asia. Run by the government of Delhi’s prison department, Tihar Prison is styled as a correctional institution and also known as Tihar Ashram. The first Indian female IPS officer, Kiran Bedi was the Inspector General of Prisons at the helm of reformative programs for rehabilitation of the Tihar prison inmates.

At Tihar Jail in India, the guests will be treated to the food cooked by the prisoners though they will not be able to interact with the prisoners and use their mobile phones or other electronic devices for security reasons. What one-day stay in Tihar Jail rooms will cost the guests is yet to be decided on.

How to Reach Tihar Jail in New Delhi

Tihar Prison is easily accessible by bus and Delhi Metro from Indira Gandhi International Airport. Located in Tihar Village, nearly 7 km from Chanakya Puri to the west of New Delhi, Tihar Jail will surely be among the most offbeat tourist places in Delhi once the prison tourism program ‘Feel Like Jail’ is rolled out for commoners.

These dialogues are etched in the memory of Indians who have grown up watching Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay at home and abroad. What is it like if you get to visit and explore the world of Sholay in real, not in reel? How exciting!

The shooting location of Sholay film will soon come alive as a tourist place in the Indian state of Karnataka. The Tourism Department of Karnataka is planning to set up a 3-D virtual reality village at Ramadevara Betta in Ramanagaram district where Sholay was shot. The virtual reality village after Ramgarh of Sholay will come up sprawling an area of 42,184 square feet.

To be built at a cost of INR 7.5 crore, the virtual reality village at the shooting location of Sholay film in Karnataka is an ambitious project. This upcoming tourist village will bring alive the immortal characters of Sholay through 3D printing and virtual reality (VR) technology.

The tourist village will be equipped with audio-visual systems and multiple screens. Visitors will be provided with VR headsets and 3D goggles. Some of the iconic moments will be brought to life with permanent exhibits at the shooting location of Sholay film such as Basanti’s carriage, the water tank which Veeru pretended to commit suicide from, the den of Gabbar Sing’s den where Thakuar was handcuffed.

Reportedly, the Karnataka Tourism Department is seeking collaboration with Sippy Productions to help execute the project. Undoubtedly, the virtual reality village at the shooting location of Sholay film will be a must-visit tourist place in Karnataka on completion of the project. Good news for foreign tourists to India! Indian e-visa for foreign tourists is more flexible and liberal than before. The enhanced flexibility of Indian e-visa is intended to fetch more foreign tourist arrivals to India. The government announced to liberalize e-visa to India for foreign visitors by increasing the validity period from 30 days to 4 months. It will come into effect soon in April 2017.

The new policy of Indian e-visa for foreign nationals will allow foreign visitors to stay in India up to 2 months from one month. Foreigners are eligible for the increased duration of stay in certain categories of e-visa to India. Effective from April 1, the three new sub-categories of Indian e-visa are e-tourist visa, e-business visa, and e-medical visa.

Moreover, the citizens of the countries including USA, UK, UAE and Australia, which are eligible for Indian e-visa, can seek to visit India under two new categories: Intern (I) and Film (F). The Intern e-visa to India will be granted to those looking to pursue internship programs in non-government organizations. Those looking to shoot films in India can apply for the Film e-visa to India.

India’s Intern e-visa came into effect on March 1. 2017. Its approval requires applicants to comply with certain terms and conditions. The Film e-visa to India comes with maximum one-year validity and permits multiple entries during this period.

The new policy of Indian e-visa for foreign visitors makes approval of business and medical e-visas mandatory within 48 hours of application in emergency cases. Applicants from 161 foreign countries will receive an email authorizing them to visit India upon approval of their applications for medical or business e-visa to India. They must carry a printout of the authorization email and present it to immigrant authorities upon arrival in India.

Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports have got dedicated immigration counters and help desks to assist foreigners on medical e-visa to India. India will soon introduce multiple-entry e-visa for tourism and business with a five-year validity period. It will be available to the citizens of most of 161 countries.

The Indian e-visa facility has been extended to 24 airports from 16 airports for entry to India. Recently Pune Airport (PNQ) has been put on the India e-visa list. The facility is also available at three Indian ports including Goa, Mangalore and Cochin in order to promote cruise tourism, according to the new policy of Indian e-visa. Chennai and Mumbai seaports will also start providing the Indian e-visa service shortly.

India Tourism kept its words to foreign tourists from 161 countries by launching free SIM cards for them. Foreign nationals from the countries which are eligible for Indian e-visa will get pre-activated SIM cards for free on arrival in India. The Tourism Ministry of India had promised this facility as a New Year gift to foreign tourists under the program, Atithi Devo Bhava (the guest is equivalent to god).

Free SIM cards for foreign tourists on Indian e-visa will initially be available at IGI New Delhi Airport. The facility will gradually be rolled out at 15 other major airports of India where foreign tourists can get e-visa on arrival. The SIM cards will be pre-loaded with talk time INR 50 rupees and 50 MB data.

After e-visa on arrival in India, the launch of free SIM cards is another big step towards ensuring hassle-free hospitality to foreign tourists. Normally it takes them about two hours to get SIM cards activated after they arrive in India and adds to their jetlag on international flights. With pre-activated and pre-loaded SIM cards, foreign tourists can now heave a sigh of relief.

A major advantage of this tourist-friendly initiative is that SIM cards will come with 24-hour tourist helpline service in 12 languages, including Hindi, English, Russian, German, French, Japanese and German. The SIM cards for foreign tourists on Indian e-visa will be valid for 30 days from the day of arrival in India.

As of now, free SIM cards will be given as welcome kits to only those foreign visitors on Indian e-visa. It’s because their complete information is available in advance and they won’t be able to misuse the SIM cards. With the SIM cards readily available at the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) counters at airports, tourists will be able to communicate with their homes, tour operators and likes.

Free SIM cards for foreign tourists with e-visa will be available at the airports of Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mumbai, Chennai, Varanasi, Panaji, Kolkata and others. A map India, a tourism booklet and a list of emergency numbers will be given along with a SIM card for free.

The first of its kind, Veer Yatra is a noble Indian Military tourism initiative. Launched by a body of ex-servicemen from Indian Army in the state of Maharashtra, Veer Yatra is a walk through the military history of India, which dates back to the year 1857 when Sepoy Mutiny, the first War of Independence, took place.

Veer Yatra, which is a nationwide tour of Indian Military camps, colleges, memorials and museums, began today. The Maharashtra Ex-servicemen Corporation (MESCO) undertook the initiative to revive the glory of Indian Military which has immensely contributed to the world history and played a significant role in many historic wars including the First and Second World Wars.

MESCO’s Indian Military Tourism project is aimed at bridging the gap between the military establishment and civilian population of the country. Veer Yatra is full of opportunities for people to explore and experience the world of Indian armed forces from close quarters, thereby imbibing sense of patriotism or rekindling their love for the country.

War memorials, border posts, naval bases, defense academies, army workshops, army hospitals, army colleges, warfare art centers, war museums, air force stations and military hostels fall under the purview of Indian Military Tourism. Veer Yatra also includes a tour of Indian Army posts on Indo-Pakistan and Indo-China borders. Civilians will be introduced to military operations and army survival techniques too.

Another great purpose of Indian Military Tourism is generating employment for retired servicemen and widows of martyrs through Veer Yatra tours across the country. MESCO’s motto is rehabilitation of physically sound, disciplined and efficient ex-servicemen from Indian armed forces. The heroic stories of Indian Army in precarious terrains, hostile circumstances and extreme atmospheric conditions are worth knowing by the youth of India.

Since British Indian Army was renamed Indian Army post independence in 1947, the military power has been the defense backbone of India in the First Indo-Pakistan / Kashmir War of 1947, the annexation of Hyderabad or Operation Polo of 1948, the annexation of Goa in 1961, medical assistance during the 1950-53 Korean War, the Sino-Indian War of 1962, the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, the Sino-Indian Conflict of 1967, the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, the 1971 Anti-Naxalite Operation, the Siachen Conflict of 1984, the Kargil War of 1999 and United Nations’ Peacekeeping Missions.

The Indian Military Tourism initiative comprises different tours for different age-groups.

Currently, Lumbini Park, Eat Street, Birla Temple and NTR Gardens are crowd-pulling tourist attractions around Hussain Sagar Lake.

Hussain Sagar to Get a Memorial Park

A 12-acre land on the surrounding of Hussain Sagar Lake will house the new monument along with a memorial park. ‘If you want to leave your footprints on the sands of time, do not drag your feet’. It is one of the inspiring quotes by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, late President of India. True to his words, he left an everlasting impression in our lives and the history of India. After his demise in July 2015, several memorials, awards, monuments and educational institutions have been named or renamed in his honor. The latest initiative to commemorate the life and work of the legend is an upcoming memorial museum for Dr. Abdul Kalam in New Delhi.

The Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum is coming up at Dilli Haat, a hub of Indian handicraft culture in New Delhi. Slated for opening on July 27, the death anniversary of Dr. Kalam, the museum will showcase glimpses from his austere lifestyle and his significant contributions to science before he became the First Citizen of India in 2002. The museum will be open and free to all. Evidently, the Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum will be among the best places to visit in Delhi.

Though popular tourist attractions in Delhi include several museums like Toilet Museum and Dolls Museum, the memorial museum in honor of Scientist and President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam will be an altogether different place. Expected to be a thriving knowledge center, it will house some of Kalam’s personal belongings and possessions including his notes, clothes, spectacles and utensils from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, his birthplace.

An audio-visual presentation on the life, career and achievements of Dr. Kalam is another attraction of the upcoming Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum at Dilli Haat. Dilli Haat, a most frequented cultural hub, is quite popular with tourists in the national capital. A memorial museum based on the life of such a legend will be an enlightening attraction to the tourists on visit to Dilli Haat, according to Kapil Mishra, Delhi Tourism Minister.

Besides Delhi Tourism, the government of Tamil Nadu has instituted an award in his honor and is building a memorial in Rameshwaram. While Kerala set up a university after him, Uttar Pradesh honored the great leader by renaming Uttar Pradesh Technical University to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University. Odisha changed Wheeler Island’s name to Abdul Kalam Island in his memory. Even Switzerland declared May 26 as ‘Science Day’ in 2005 to commemorate Abdul Kalam’s visit to the country.

The Delhi government has roped in the ‘best people’ to design the Abdul Kalam Memorial Museum at Dilli Haat. The Delhi Tourism authority stated that the museum for Dr. Kalam is not meant to be another tourist attraction on the map of Delhi, but it would positively impact inbound tourism in the city. It is primarily a tribute to the Missile Man of India.
