With the launch of new international nonstop flights to and from India, including the Delhi-Doha one, Air India is going strict about its free baggage allowance in all travel classes. Known for its liberal baggage policy across its global network except Newark to India flights, Air India has recently revised the carry-on or hand baggage rules.

In the latest revision of the cabin baggage policy, Air India has introduced charges for excess hand baggage with effect starting November 1, 2019.  AI passengers will have to cough up extra money if they travel with excess hand baggage on Air India flights, both domestic and international.

Excess weight over and above Air India’s free hand baggage allowance of 8kgs is chargeable now. Usually, travelers are allowed to carry only one piece of carry-on or cabin baggage weighing not more than 8kgs, no matter whether they book cheap Air India economy tickets or business class fares. The airline charges excess hand baggage on domestic and international routes, at different rates.

Air India levies $15/kg and applicable GST charges for excess hand baggage on passengers of its international flights. In case of domestic flights, Rs 500/kg is levied for excess hand baggage, alongside applicable GST charges. These new charges for excess hand baggage on AI flights came into effect this November 1.

The latest revision of Air India’s hand baggage policy does also state that a traveler won’t be allowed to carry more than 15kgs of hand baggage despite additional payment for excess weight. If one’s hand baggage exceeds 15kgs of weight, it will not be allowed either in cabin or as checked-in. In such cases, travelers are required to contact the airline before booking their travel on IndianEagle.com or any other portal.

Earlier this month, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for a cut in dimensions of carry-on bags in a bid to optimize space in overhead bins of aircraft cabins. IATA suggested the dimension of 55x45x25 cm for cabin bags to be reduced to a dimension of 55x35x20 cm for convenient storage of carry-on bags in overhead bins. Even Lufthansa and Emirates Airlines agreed to accept IATA’s proposal. However, IATA withdrew the proposal and put it on hold, a few days later, making it a reason for the passengers of Emirates and Lufthansa Airlines to rejoice.

But, British Airways has decided to reduce the size limits of carry-on baggage for all flights. The decision will be implemented on and remain effective from August 18, 2015. No passengers with cabin bags larger than 40x30x15 cm would be allowed to board British Airways flights from August 18. 45x36x20 cm is the existing size of carry-on bags, according to British Airways’ inflight baggage policy.

Passengers can continue to carry two pieces of hand baggage on flights with British Airways, and the second cabin bag (main bag) will remain unchanged in size, much to the pleasure of travelers. The decision to reduce the dimensions of one cabin bag resulted from an increase in the number of customers flying with hand baggage, exceeding the storage capacity of overhead bins.

Handbags and laptop bags within the new size limits will be marked with a yellow tag facilitating easy boarding of passengers into the World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) and World Traveller (Economy) cabins, at departure airports. Only the hand baggage with yellow tags will be allowed on board.

Cabin bags exceeding the new size limits will be checked in. Passengers may be asked to pay for checking in extra bags if the total number of check-in bags exceeds the permissible collective weight, according to British Airways’ check-in baggage policy. If overhead bins become full on very busy flights before all passengers are boarded, some passengers at the end may be asked to check in their carry-on bags without yellow tags.

British Airways expects passengers to comply with its new hand baggage policy so that flights can depart on time. The airline is looking to maintain punctuality and ensure convenience for passengers at the same time.

All Nippon Airways is an international airline with four hubs of operations in Japan. ANA’s international hubs of operations are Tokyo Narita International Airport, Haneda International Airport, Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport. All Nippon Airways operates flights to 49 destinations across Japan and serves 32 international routes crisscrossing the globe. The airline has a unified carry-on and checked baggage policy for all routes and flights.

ANA has a generous baggage policy for the First Class and Business Class travelers on flights to India from the USA. But, ANA’s current checked baggage policy for the Economy Class is not so generous on international flights. The facts and figures of All Nippon Airways’ baggage policy for international passengers flying in all travel classes are given below as per the latest information from the airline itself.

At present, the Economy Class passengers can carry only one piece of checked baggage weighing up to 23 kg / 50 lbs on All Nippon Airways’ USA to India flights. The same is applicable to ANA’s Premium Economy Class. Infants or children occupying seats on Economy flights and traveling on the same route are entitled to the same baggage policy as adult passengers are. If the permissible weight or dimension of checked baggage for the Economy Class exceeds, allowance for extra baggage will be levied.

Note: All Nippon Airways has proposed to revise its free checked baggage policy for international Economy flights. The Economy Class travelers with international flight tickets issued on and after January 8, 2015, can check in two pieces of baggage instead of one piece at zero cost. It means that ANA is going to liberalize its checked baggage policy for the Economy Class by letting passengers carry a total weight of 46 kg / 100 lbs in 2 pieces of baggage. ANA has not yet confirmed if the revised Economy Class baggage policy for international flights is applicable to infants or children occupying seats.

ANA’s Economy Class passengers can carry only one piece of cabin baggage within the dimension of 55cm×40cm×25cm besides a few personal belongings including laptop, handbag, camera, umbrella, etc. The combined weight of one carry-on bag and personal belongings must not weigh more than 10 kg.

British Airways is the national carrier of the United Kingdom and one of the international airlines. British Airways flies to more than 150 destinations across 69 countries in 6 continents. It has a generous baggage policy for travelers flying from the United States to India, in compliance with the standard baggage rules of global aviation. Indian Eagle shares details of British Airways’ check-in baggage allowances as per the latest information from the airline itself.

British Airways’ checked baggage allowances are different for domestic flights in Europe and international flights to the rest of the world. In general, the airline permits a checked bag of 208 cm in total of three dimensions – height, length and width. This permissible dimension includes that of the handle, wheels and outer pockets. A larger checked bag measuring a total of 230 cm incurs additional charges. Currently, British Airways does not charge additional fees for a larger checked bag of this dimension. But any baggage bigger than this will be charged for shipping.

Economy Class passengers can carry 2 checked bags; each weighing maximum 23 kg on British Airways’ connecting flights between USA and India. The same is the checked baggage allowance for children under 2-11 years traveling in the Economy Class. British Airways permits travelers to carry one standard-sized bag, one fully collapsible stroller and one car seat on tickets for infants (under 2 years) during USA-India flights. The airline offers the same free checked baggage allowance to premium Economic Class travelers on all US to India flights.

The First and Business Class travelers can carry three free checked bags while flying with British Airways on the same route. Each bag must not weigh more than 32 kg. The free baggage allowance for children and infants traveling in the First and Business Classes is the same as for those in the Economy and Premium Economy classes. British Airways makes separate arrangements for the carriage of sporting equipment and musical instruments under permissible free baggage allowances.

British Airways’ free hand baggage policy allows adult and child travelers to carry one hand bag and one personal bag in the cabins of all travel classes. The airline permits only one hand bag, no personal bag to infant travelers under 2 years. A total of 126 cm (including three dimensions) is the size limit for cabin bags. Personal bags must not measure more than an overall dimension of 101 cm in size. 23 kg is the maximum weight limit for cabin and personal bags on all British Airways’ flights from USA to India.

Key notes:

• If you buy any item at a departure airport while traveling with British Airways, it will be considered part of the hang baggage.
• If you exceed the free hand baggage allowance in size or weight, you need to check in the excess part of the hand baggage and pay an additional fee.
• You must keep the personal bag under the in-front seat on plane.
• All aircraft in British Airways’ fleet may not have enough space for safe stowage of all hand bags on board. In this case, you may be required to check in one of the hand bags at the boarding point.
• If a connecting flight with British Airways involves another airline, baggage allowances of the two airlines may be different.
• If your fair type or ticket type entitles you to carry only two free hand bags within the size and weight limits, you will have to pay for extra baggage at the airport.

*British Airways may modify any details of baggage policy, baggage fees, baggage restrictions and excess baggage charges at any time and without notification.
