Not every leader or veteran leaves people behind in tears. The US tech industry is left shocked and bereaved over the sudden demise of Indian-origin Soma Somasegar, a tech behemoth, MD of Madrona Venture Group, and former Microsoft executive for 27 years. He breathed his last on May 19 at the age of 59. Indian American CEOs, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, and startup founders are mourning his departure; the loss of a trusted mentor to many engineers and ‘American Dream’ aspirants in the US.

Who is Indian American Soma Somasegar?

Born in Puducherry and educated in Chennai, S. Soma Somasegar belonged to the first generation of Indian engineers who saw computing before India’s technology boom began. He studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at College of Engineering (CEG) under Anna University. During the early 1980s, when computers hardly made it to Indian classrooms, Soma learned programming through IBM mainframes and punch-card systems. Friends and alumni from CEG often described him as intensely focused, curious, and unusually calm under pressure.

After graduating in 1986, Somasegar reportedly got an opportunity to work with the Indian Space Research Organisation. At a time when ISRO was one of India’s most prestigious scientific institutions, many engineers would have considered it a dream career. But Soma chose something riskier and more aspirational. He moved to the USA to pursue higher education and build a global technology career. That decision changed his life. He earned advanced degrees in Computer Science from Louisiana State University and the University at Buffalo before joining Microsoft in 1989, just as the company was beginning to dominate the software world.

Why Silicon Valley is mourning for Soma Somasegar

The reaction to S. Somasegar’s passing has been unusually emotional because Silicon Valley is mourning more than a successful executive. It is mourning a mentor who quietly helped shape an entire generation of Indian-origin tech leaders in America. Across social media, startup founders, venture capitalists, engineers, and AI executives are describing him as the person who opened doors when they were unknown immigrants trying to survive in the US technology industry.

One of the heart-felt tributes came from Sriram Krishnan, a senior AI policy advisor at the White House. Krishnan revealed that he and his wife Aarthi Ramamurthy would not have their careers without Soma’s support. He said Somasegar identified talents early, helped them professionally, mentored them personally, and remained generous with his time despite being one of Microsoft’s top leaders. Satya Nadella also described Soma as someone who stood beside people during difficult times and empowered developers across the world with quiet leadership.

Soma Somasegar’s contribution to Microsoft

When Soma joined Microsoft in 1989, the company was transitioning from a software company into a global technology empire. Over the next 27 years, he became one of the most influential engineering leaders inside Microsoft and helped shape products used by millions of developers worldwide. He worked across operating systems, enterprise platforms, developer technologies, and cloud infrastructure during some of the company’s most important decades.

Soma’s biggest impact came through Microsoft’s Developer Division, where he led the company’s developer strategy for nearly 12 years. Under his leadership, Microsoft strengthened platforms like Visual Studio, .NET, and enterprise developer tools at a time when the company was competing aggressively with Apple, Google, and open-source ecosystems. Inside Microsoft, he worked alongside leaders like Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Satya Nadella during the company’s transformation from desktop computing to cloud services.

The Mentor behind many Indian-American success stories

Long before mentorship became a corporate buzzword, Soma Somasegar was already practicing it quietly. Young Indian engineers arriving in the US during the 1990s and 2000s often found in him a rare combination of technical brilliance and personal warmth. He regularly guided immigrant professionals on careers, leadership, and adapting to Silicon Valley culture. Several startup founders, who are now leading billion-dollar companies, say Soma was among the few senior leaders who believed in them.

Even after leaving Microsoft, his role as a mentor only grew stronger. At Madrona Venture Group, Soma worked closely with startup founders in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, enterprise software, and automation. He advised and invested in companies including Snowflake and UiPath. Founders often described him as approachable, deeply thoughtful, and unusually generous with his time, even at the peak of his success.

Achievements and recognitions

Soma Somasegar’s achievements were recognized both in the US and in India. In 2008, he received the prestigious Asian American Engineer of the Year Award, one of the highest honors for Asian-origin engineering leaders in the US. The award recognized not just his technical leadership at Microsoft, but also his influence on the global software industry.

His alma mater in Chennai also celebrated his achievements proudly. Anna University honored Somasegar with an honorary doctorate for his contributions to global technology leadership and engineering innovation. Alumni groups at CEG Guindy regularly featured him among the institution’s most distinguished global graduates.

After having updated the immigrant photo validity rules in December 2025, the Department of Homeland Security is tightening the signature rules for USCIS forms for H1B visa, Green Card, work permit, status adjustment/extension, etc. Under the new USCIS signature rules 2026, your signature can make or break your US visa application or immigration filing. The latest USCIS update has already raised concerns among US employers, immigrants, and visa applicants because filing fees will not be refunded in most cases.

What is the new USCIS signature rule?

The new US visa signature rule for H-1B, Green Card, and other immigration filings was introduced by the US Department of Homeland Security through an interim final rule that will take effect on 10 July 2026. Earlier, unsigned or incorrect forms were usually rejected during the intake stage and returned for correction. Now, USCIS officers have broader authority to deny an application later during adjudication if the signature is found invalid.

This means your case could stay under review for months before being denied because of a signature issue. USCIS says the updated policy is intended to improve filing integrity and reduce fraudulent submissions.

List of USCIS-approved signatures for US visa and immigration

USCIS still accepts traditional handwritten (wet-ink) signatures for most paper filings. The existing immigrants, new applicants, and employers are being advised to carefully follow the updated signature guidelines before submission. The valid ways to sign USCIS forms are:

  • Original handwritten signatures
  • Clear scanned copies of wet-ink signatures
  • Faxed or photocopied signatures in some cases
  • Electronic signatures only where officially permitted by USCIS

What signatures are invalid and unacceptable to USCIS in 2026

The latest USCIS update clearly states that questionable, copied, or improperly generated signatures will not be approved starting 10 July 2026.

  • Typewritten names instead of hand-written signatures
  • Copy-pasted signatures
  • Software-generated signature images
  • Virtually created signature images
  • Signatures by unauthorized individuals
  • Poor-quality scanned signature
  • Signature stamps in paper filings

USCIS’ new signature policy to impact the following

The latest update applies to US visa and immigration processes, including

  • H-1B visa petitions
  • Employment-based Green Card applications
  • Adjustment of Status filings
  • Work permit applications
  • Change or extension of status requests
  • Family-sponsored immigration petitions

Forms like I-129 and I-485 are among the most important documents affected by the new visa application signature policy.

How it affects US immigrants and H1B visa applicants

The likelihood of approval delay or rejection increases even after the USCIS accepts a filing, under the new signature rule in 2026. It would significantly affect Indian-origin H1B Visa and Green Card holders/applicants, as they make up the largest group in the employment-based US immigration category. Many H-1B and Green Card filings involve remote signing between applicants, employers, and immigration attorneys, leaving space for signature-related errors.

As per the USCIS update, even a small issue in signature could lead to approval delay, loss of filing fees, rejection (in the worst case), and additional stress for Indians who are currently facing long Green Card backlogs and visa processing timelines.

Aadhaar 2026 rules include certain conditions for new applicants and existing Aadhaar users:

  • Supporting documents must be valid during submission
  • Supporting documents must be owned by the applicant
  • Supporting documents must be verifiable
  • The applicants’ name must be consistent across documents
  • Issuing authority must not have invalidated documents

UIDAI clarifies which documents are valid for what updates

Passport: Valid Indian passports continue to be among the most important documents under the UIDAI rules 2026 for Aadhaar. Resident Indians and NRIs can use it as proof of identity, address proof, relationship proof, and date of birth proof.

Ration Card / e-Ration Card: As per the new Aadhaar rules, ration cards can be used as proof of identity, address proof, and relationship proof. However, UIDAI does not accept them as valid proof of date of birth.

Voter ID / e-Voter ID: Residents and non-resident Indians can use it for ID proof and address proof during Aadhaar updates. Voter ID is not valid for relationship proof or date of birth proof under UIDAI’s latest document list.

Driving Licence: A driving licence is accepted only as proof of identity. UIDAI’s latest supporting document list does not treat it as a valid proof for address, relationship, or date of birth.

Government-issued service ID cards: Photo ID cards issued by the Central Government, State Governments, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and statutory or regulatory bodies are widely accepted under the Aadhaar card rules 2026. These documents can be used for identity proof, address proof, and in certain cases, date of birth proof as well.

Documents such as Pensioner Photo ID Cards, Freedom Fighter Photo ID Cards, and Pension Payment Orders (PPOs) are accepted for multiple Aadhaar update categories including identity proof, address proof, relationship proof, and date of birth proof. Kisan Photo Passbooks are accepted mainly as proof of identity and address proof.

Key Aadhaar rule changes 2026

Restricted limits: Aadhaar Card holders now get only once chance to modify the date of birth and gender. It is crucial to get these key details right.

Child’s Aadhaar enrolment: Head of Family-based enrolment is central to Aadhaar applications for young children. Kids under 5 years must submit biometric updates when they will turn 5 years old, and next at the age of 15.

Strict name validation: Strict document verification for name changes is in place now as a measure to prevent fraud and money laundering, given one’s Aadhaar Card is linked to PAN and bank accounts these days.

For OCI Cardholders: Aadhaar for OCI Cardholders and foreign nationals (from Nepal and Bhutan) is valid for 10 years. For other foreign nationals and Long-term Visa holders (LTV), it is valid as long as their visa to India or FRRO permit.

New Aadhaar design: By late 2026, redesigned physical Aadhaar Cards will be issued only with the photograph and a secure QR code. Your 12-digit number and residential address will not be printed on the front.

Some OCI services updates and new OCI Card 2026 rules took effect starting April 1, alongside the reduced customs duty on international arrivals’ foreign imports to India. The Government of India has stopped accepting the PIO Card as a valid travel document. OCI Cardholders must obtain a Digital e-Arrival Card before boarding flights to India, as the physical disembarkation form has been discontinued permanently. Also, the OCI service portal has been revamped for a more seamless user experience.

India removes 6-month stay rule for OCI Applicants

The OCI Card rules in 2026 include no 6-month stay requirement for OCI applicants applying from India. Earlier, applicants applying for an OCI Card in India often faced confusion around proving “ordinary residence,” which was commonly interpreted as a six-month stay. This led to delays and uncertainty.

Effective 8 April 2026, the Bureau of Immigration India has officially clarified that eligible foreign nationals can apply for OCI without completing six months of stay in India. As long as you have a valid visa and required documents, you can submit your application soon after arrival in India.

Revised fees for OCI Card services

The revised fee structure for OCI Card services is effective starting 1 April 2026. The new OCI application fee continues to be fixed at USD 275 (same as before) or its equivalent amount in local currencies outside India. If you file a fresh application in the UAE, you need to pay approximately AED 1,010 (equivalent to USD 275) other than an additional service charge. The OCI application fee in Singapore is SGD 349. The new OCI registration in Canada costs CAD 376, effective April 2026.

Rs 15,000 is the standard fee for fresh OCI Card applications submitted within India. The fee must be paid through a demand draft drawn in favor of “Pay and Accounts Officer (secretariat), Ministry of Home Affairs”, payable at New Delhi.

  • USD 275: Fresh OCI application abroad
  • Rs 15,000: Fresh OCI application in India
  • USD 25: OCI Card reissuance with change in personal details
  • USD 100: Duplicate OCI Card issuance (lost or damaged)
  • USD 25: OCI Card reissuance after 20 years of the cardholder’s age
  • USD 25: OCI Card renunciation
  • USD 25: A late fee for updation of passport details after 3 months of a new passport issued

OCI Card 2026 rules for children and foreign spouses

The OCI Card latest updates also include clearer requirements for specific categories of applicants. For children, the apostille of birth certificates has become an important step in the fresh OCI application process.

For foreign spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders, stricter compliance is required. Applicants must provide updated passport details along with a declaration confirming that the marriage is still valid. In some cases, children may not need to be physically present at centers like VFS Global if both parents provide consent.

List of documents required for OCI Card in India (2026)

  • Foreign passport (with sufficient validity)
  • Foreign citizenship proof (naturalization certificate, if applicable)
  • Proof of Indian origin (old Indian passport, surrender certificate, or relevant documents)
  • Recent passport-size photograph (as per OCI specifications)
  • Signature (for online application upload)
  • Valid Indian visa or residence permit
  • Address proof in India (rent agreement, utility bill, or declaration)
  • Marriage certificate (for spouse-based OCI applications)
  • Birth certificate (mandatory for child applicants; must be apostilled if issued outside India)
  • Registration Certificate/Residential Permit (required only if your visa mandates FRRO registration)

Latest updates for OCI Cardholders in 2026

  • When a new passport update is pending, OCI Card holders can travel to and from India given the previous OCI Card was valid.
  • OCI applicants among children may not need to visit the VFS Global center for an appointment. Parents can attend with proper authorization.
  • Foreign spouses of OCI Cardholders and Indian citizens must upload their latest photo, new passport, and a marriage declaration online after every passport renewal.

India’s Union Budget 2026 revised the baggage rules for international arrivals, both Indian-origin and foreign-origin. It replaced the decade-old baggage regulations of 2016 by increasing the duty-free limit for imported goods to India from the US and other countries. Also, the customs duty relief on personal jewelry has got a little better for NRIs and OCI cardholders traveling to India in 2026. India’s new duty-free baggage allowance is effective starting 2 February, as per the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

Whom does India’s new baggage rules 2026 apply to?

The new baggage rules, 2026, including new duty-free limit, and strict customs guidelines, apply to all passengers of international flights to India from USA and other countries. It equally applies to those arriving in India by sea routes.

  • Indian residents
  • Tourists of Indian origin; NRIs and OCI cardholders
  • Foreigners with a valid visa, other than tourist visa
  • Tourists of foreign origin
  • Crew members

Union Budget 2026 for NRIs, India raises duty-free limit, India cuts customs duty to 10%, carrying electronic items to India from USA,

What is the new duty-free limit for passengers to India?

In the Union Budget 2026, the government of India raised the duty-free limit to Rs 75,000 for the arriving Indian residents, NRIs, OCI Cardholders, and foreigners holding valid non-tourist visas. Earlier, Indian Customs’ duty-free allowance was limited to Rs 50,000 on the total valuation of foreign goods imported to India for personal use. Under the bonafide baggage rules, 2026, the new duty-free limit is Rs 25,000 for foreigners (non-Indian origin) arriving in India by air or sea. Earlier, it was only Rs. 15,000.

New customs rules for bringing laptops to India

India’s new baggage rules, 2026, allow you to bring a new laptop or notebook free of customs duty in your bona fine baggage. You must be 18 years or above, and the new laptop or notebook purchased abroad must be for your personal or family use, or gifting, under Section 79 of the Customs Act, 1962. You have to pay the applicable customs duty on a second new laptop if the value exceeds the enhanced duty-free limit.

What if you carry dutiable goods to India beyond the duty-free limit?

On arrival in India, you need to pay customs duty on the amount minus the new duty-free limit of Rs 75,000, if the value of dutiable goods in your bonafide baggage exceeds the duty-free allowance.

Well, there is some good news for overseas Indians visiting the home country and resident Indians returning from an international trip. The new finance bill, under the Union Budget 2026-27, has reduced the customs duty to a flat 10% for all dutiable goods, from electronics to fashion accessories to high-end luxury items to gourmet food, that they carry for personal use or a non-commercial purpose like gifting (to a certain extent).

Effective from 1 April 2026, you will be paying only 10% as customs duty on the taxable value of imported goods, minus the duty-free limit of Rs 75,000, provided the dutiable goods are honestly declared through the Red Channel at Indian airports. Previously, taxable imports from abroad, though for personal use, attracted a basic customs duty of 20% or higher on the extra value.

“It means, starting in April 2026, the cost of bringing electronic items from USA to India for personal use or gifting will significantly drop. If you bring a new iPhone from USA to India, other than your personal one in use, you will have to pay a flat 10% customs duty on the iPhone price minus the duty-free allowance of Rs 75,000, and a social welfare surcharge at 10% of the applicable customs duty,” said Sourav Agarwal, Senior Editor at IndianEagle.com, your trusted travel-booking partner.

What foreign items don’t qualify for the flat 10% customs duty in India?

The reduced customs duty won’t apply to alcoholic beverages, printed reading materials, tobacco products, cars, and items that require an import license.

How much gold jewelry can you bring under India’s new baggage rules 2026?

Under the new baggage rules effective 2 February 2026, India redefined duty-free jewelry allowance for Indians, both resident and overseas. The redefined jewelry allowance is purely weight-based now, irrespective of the value. Whether you are a resident Indian, or an NRI living abroad, you are entitled to carrying gold jewelry duty free to India within the following limits:

  • 40 grams for Indian women and 20 grams for Indian men returning from an international trip
  • 40 grams for Indian-origin women and 20 grams for Indian-origin men residing abroad for more than 1 year

India has introduced new passport rules 2026, effective February 15, bringing important procedural updates for residents as well as overseas Indians. Over the past 12 months, passport policies have steadily evolved, from simplifying post-marriage passport name change procedures to strengthening passport photo compliance under ICAO standards. If you are eyeing your Indian passport renewal in 2026, applying for a fresh passport, or submitting an application for your child, understanding the latest passport-related changes and updates in India can help avoid documentation errors and get the passport issued in a very short time.

India’s new passport rules effective 15 February 2026

The latest rules for Indian Passport holders are part of the upgraded Passport Seva Program 2.0 that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rolled out to modernize services, reduce delays, and enhance document security. Here are the key changes Indians and persons of Indian-origin living in the USA and other countries must know:

India's passport rules 2026, new Indian passport rules for NRIs

Simplified documentation and less paperwork

One of the most notable changes is less paperwork for fresh applications. Applying for a new passport in India no longer requires you to get a thick bunch of document photocopies and visit a Passport Seva Kendra multiple times. Under the passport rules in 2026:

  • You can upload documents directly to the Passport Seva portal
  • Aadhaar and other government-issued IDs are prioritized as primary proof
  • Physical submission of multiple certificates is no longer required in most cases
  • Applications with incomplete or mismatched details will be rejected

This move is intended to make passport processing faster and more convenient, especially for first-time applicants and renewals. Applicants are advised to carefully review every detail before submitting the application, because though the process is simpler, it allows no room for mistakes.

Faster and digitized police verification in India

Police verification often caused delays in the passport application processing. However, it has become more streamlined and faster in 2026. Reports indicate that:

  • Verification requests are now digitally integrated with local police systems
  • Faster background checks shorten processing timelines in several states
  • In some cases, passports may be issued before physical police verification is completed

Complete online application and real-time tracking

The application process has become more digital and user-friendly under the updated passport system. You can now:

  • Complete the entire application form online
  • Upload required documents digitally
  • Book appointments easily
  • Track real-time status updates

Among the new Indian Passport rules in 2026, the digital-first approach reduces dependency on intermediaries and improves transparency throughout the process.

Simplified passport rules for minors

Families applying for children’s passports are also going to benefit from the streamlined system. To ease delays in children’s applications, authorities now readily accept:

  • Digital birth certificates
  • School identity cards
  • Simplified parental consent form

However, parental authorization and identity verification remain mandatory.

What documents are required for Indian passport renewal in 2026?

  • Aadhaar card
  • Old passport
  • Updated address proof if changed

For NRIs applying for passport renewals in India

  • Old passport
  • Proof of Indian address if applicable
  • Valid visa or residence permit abroad

Accuracy and consistency of information is the focus

MEA highlights the importance of accurate information, as applications with missing details or incorrect uploads will be rejected for sure.

  • Details like full name, date of birth, and address must match in all documents.
  • Discrepancies can delay processing or lead to rejection.
  • Applicants must verify every document before submission.

Temples – sacred places where faith in the divine flourishes and artistic creativity finds expression. Many Hindu temples in India are known to have existed since time immemorial, yet the genius of ancient Indians as evidenced in the design and architecture of these temples leaves us baffled to this day. Perhaps the fact that their painstaking perfection was unaided by any sort of advanced equipment known today, makes their creation even more charismatic.

Thousands of miles away from India and its great architectural heritage; Hawaii is home to a mighty Lord Shiva temple on the serene islands of Kauai. Untouched by modern-age construction technology and machinery, the San Marga Iraivan Temple of Hawaii is akin to ancient stone temples of India. It is said to be North America’s first temple architecture of white granite stone chiseled and carved with traditional hand-held tools preserving the ancient stone carving techniques in the process.

Hawaii Iraivan Temple: Inspired by millennia-old Chola Architecture

Iraivan Temple, whose foundation stone was laid in 1991, has taken the shape of a beautiful Chola-style temple with architectural grandeur and intricate carvings over more than two decades. The 4-foot-thick foundation bearing this 3.2 million pound temple is made of a crack-free formula involving coal ash. The temple is designed with great precision of art, science and engineering so that it lasts one thousand years in the seismically active region of Hawaii. Moreover, the spacing within the temple, as guided by Vaastu Shastra, elevates the vibration of the place and you cannot help but feel mystified here.

Musical Pillars & Other Architectural Highlights

Elaborate carvings, sacred motifs, and amazing structures meet your eye at this temple. Two massive elephant sculptures stand at the entrance. As you go further, you can see a large stone bell, long stone chains, finely carved pillars, eight stone lion pillars that come with a rotatable stone ball in their mouth.

Huge sandalwood doors lead the way to the main sanctum, where 108 bronze statues of Nataraja in various dance positions are placed in dimly lit shelves surrounding the main Shiva lingam. One of the many stunning features of Hawaii’s Iraivan Temple is its two “musical pillars” encompassing 16 carved rods that produce classical Indian musical tones when gently struck with a mallet.

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami and his vision of Iraivan Temple

The seeds of Iraivan temple in Hawaii were sown in 1975 when American Hindu guru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami visioned Lord Shiva walking along the place where the temple sits today. This vision inspired his decision to transform the place into a pilgrimage site for Shiva devotees from across the world. He named the temple after an old Tamil word, Iraivan, meaning, “He who is worshiped.”

Soon, the directions were in place. The temple has been hand-built following the traditional temple architecture principles mentioned in Agama Shastra (an ancient Sanskrit text with guidelines for temple construction, worship, etc) and designed in such a way that it survives 1000 years or more. The design of San Marga Iraivan Temple, Hawaii, is credited to V. Ganapati Sthapati.

Construction began in the 1990s. Required amounts of stone were primarily quarried in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu regions and the handcrafting of white granite stones was done by 70 local sculptors in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. More than 4000+ carved stones were transported from Bengaluru to USA’s Kauai temple monastery, where craftsmen assembled them block by block.

Legend of Iraivan Temple’s 700-pound Shiva Lingam

Behind the intricately carved sandalwood doors of Hawaii’s Iraivan Temple is a rare 700-pound Shiva Lingam of quartz crystal (sphatik). Estimated to be 50 million years old, this sphatik lingam represents sky – one of the five elements called pancha bhuta. Legend has it that this sacred shiva lingam was found enclosed in mud, in its exact form and shape, by Sivaya Subramuniyaswami during his quest for it in Arkansas following his dream. This naturally formed lingam is anything unlike rock-cut structures created for worshiping purposes at temples.

Location of Iraivan Temple in Hawaii

The temple is a part of Kauai Aadheenam (Hindu Monastery), a 458-acre temple-monastery complex located on Hawaii’s Garden Island, i.e. Kauai. This vast property sprawls next to the serene Wailua River. As you approach the Wailua River, you can see the shimmering golden towers of Iraivan Temple rising against the backdrop of the lush green Mount Waialeale. The distance between this Hindu temple in Kauai and Mount Waialeale is around 8 km.

Hawaii’s Iraivan Temple is considered one of the most elaborate Hindu temples ever created in USA. Travelers are allowed to take a tour of Kauai Aadheenam and its temple. You can walk along the serene trails weaving through the monastery’s forests, unwind by a beautiful pond, and explore the architecture of this beautiful temple, which transports you back to ancient India’s Chola era when temple architecture flourished to great heights.

Effective 12 December 2025, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services has tightened how photographs are used for immigration records, signaling a wider push toward stronger identity verification and fraud prevention in the system. The USCIS limits the age of a foreign national’s photo that can be used to create immigration documents to no more than three years.

Photo rules for international travel and immigration are changing fast, especially for Indians living overseas. Indian missions have also been enforcing the new ICAO passport photo rules for NRIs since 1 December 2025. For Indians applying for passport renewal or a new passport outside India, even a minor oversight in compliance to the passport photo guidelines can now lead to rejection.

What is the new USCIS photo policy for immigrants

Under the new USCIS photo policy, the agency will only reuse a previously captured photo if it was taken within the last three years. If your photo on record is older than 36 months, USCIS will not use it to issue immigration documents.

Another key change is that self-submitted photos are no longer acceptable. You cannot upload or mail your own photographs for immigration forms. Only photos taken by USCIS or authorized biometric service providers will be used for identity verification.

Why USCIS updated the photo rules

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, USCIS allowed photos up to 10 years old to be reused for certain applications that did not require new biometrics. During the pandemic, the agency temporarily allowed even older photos to be used to reduce in-person visits. In some cases, documents were issued using photos as old as 22 years.

After the pandemic, USCIS returned to the 10-year limit. However, the agency later decided that this timeframe was still too long and has now shortened the photo reuse limit to three years. USCIS says recent photos are essential for accurate identity verification. The updated policy strengthens security, improves record accuracy, and helps prevent identity fraud across the immigration system.

Who is affected by the new USCIS photo rules

The new photo policy applies to all immigrants and non-immigrants, regardless of nationality. Indian applicants are fully covered under this rule, with no exceptions. Some immigration forms do already require a new photo every time because a biometric appointment is mandatory. These include:

  • Form I 90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card
  • Form I 485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status
  • Form N 400, Application for Naturalization
  • Form N 600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship

For these applications, USCIS captures a fresh photo as part of the standard process.

How USCIS’ 3-year photo rule actually works

The three-year rule applies only when USCIS considers reusing an existing photo already in its records. If the photo is older than three years, it will not be reused. Applicants do not need to submit photos unless USCIS specifically asks for them. In most cases, photos will be taken during a scheduled biometric appointment.

USCIS can also request a new photo even if the existing one is less than three years old. The agency has full discretion to collect updated biometrics whenever needed. This rule mainly affects applications where photos were previously reused without a new biometric appointment.

FAQs

What the new USCIS photo policy means for Green Card holders

For Green Card holders, the process remains the same. Applications such as green card renewal or adjustment of status already require biometrics, including a new photo. Because USCIS captures a fresh image each time, the three-year photo reuse rule does not practically change the process for Green Card holders.

Does the new USCIS photo rule apply to Indian applicants

Yes. The USCIS photo policy applies equally to Indian applicants and applicants from all other countries. There are no nationality-based exemptions. Indian travelers and immigrants should also be aware of parallel photo rule updates for Indian passports when applying through embassies or consulates abroad.

With back-to-back regulations for aliens, the Trump administration is leaving no stone unturned to clog loopholes in the US immigration system. After introducing a hefty Visa Integrity fee and intensifying the CBP inspection of non-US citizens at entry airports, the US government is up with new entry-exit rules for all visa holders and Green Cardholders. The new US entry-exit rules make photo and biometric data mandatory for all non-US citizens.

What is the new US entry and exit rule?

Effective 26 December 2025, the new US entry-exit system requires CBP officers to take photos and collect biometric details of all foreigners for mandatory facial recognition at all airports, seaports, and land crossings. The data to be collected upon arrival in the US will be matched against the data to be collected during departure. Any discrepancies in the biometric data comparison may get an immigrant or non-immigrant detained or deported. It may render them inadmissible to USA in the worst scenario.

New US entry-exit rule exemptions

The Department of Homeland Security clearly states that the new biometric entry-exit system does not exempt even children under 14 and the elderly over 79 from photograph capture. Precisely, the regulation will be enforced on all non-US citizens, regardless of age, language, and nationality. Since it won’t apply to US nationals and citizens, the US-born children of aliens are likely to be exempted.

Are Green Cardholders exempt to the new US border rule?

Green Cardholders are not exempt to the mandatory biometric entry-exit system at any US ports of entry, as they are only lawful permanent residents, not US citizens. Their US-born kids may be among potential exemptions.

What is new about the US border rules for aliens this time?

The new rule is a mandatory, integrated version of biometric data collection which has been limited to some groups of aliens (foreign nationals) on their entry to USA all these years. The new US border regulation that requires all visa holders and Green Cardholders to be photographed during entry and exit is a calculated move to check visa overstays, stop travel document fraud, mitigate national security risks, identify illegal non-immigrants, and trace individuals disobeying immigration laws.

Is the new US entry-exit system similar to India’s e-Arrival Card?

Not at all! Unlike the photo-based US entry and exit system, India’s digital e-arrival card does not require foreign citizens to upload any documents online. Effective 1 October 2025, the e-arrival card to India aims to ensure faster immigration clearance and quick exit or transfer to the connecting domestic flight.

President Trump’s $100,000 visa fee proclamation for H1B petitions has left not only the entire H1B visa community in utter shock but also those in India scrambling for last-minute flight tickets to the US. It is to hit hard Indians being the backbone of the H1B visa program, with India having received 71% of 85,000 visa petitions in fiscal year 2024.

H1B visa latest news, $100,000 H1B visa fee hike, who are exempted from new H1B visa fee
PC: Freepik (paid)

Who are exempted from paying the new H1B Visa fee $100,000?

Trump’s executive order that imposes a hefty $100,000 fee for H1B visa applies to new petitions. Precisely, the existing H1B visa holders in and outside the United States are exempted. The proclamation clarifies that the new annual fee can be waived for H1B workers employed in the industries aligned to the national interests of America. The Department of Homeland Security is authorized to exercise its discretion in determining whether certain industries hire aliens (non-immigrants) on H1B visa for national interests without posting a threat to the livelihood and welfare of Americans.

Why are US companies calling for immediate return of H1B workers from India?

President Trump’s H1B visa fee hike to $100,000 does also target those who have been outside the US for 12 months or longer. That’s why Microsoft, Cognizant, Google, Apple and other major H1B visa beneficiaries called their H1B employees (who have been working remotely) to return before the fee hike takes effect on 21 September.

What is National Interest Exemption (NIE) in the US?

The United States’ National Interest Exemption is a discretionary measure that allows unrestricted entry into the US for those non-immigrants in the fields of national interest, such as economy, arts, security, medical, engineering, and public welfare. H1B visa holders whose employment is important to the national interests of America can return to the US without paying the $100,000 visa fee.

Though exempted, they may face scrutiny of their documents at entry airports in the US to validate that the nature of their employment is aligned to the national interest.

Facts about Trump’s executive order raising H1B visa fee to $100K?

  • Not every H1B visa professional would incur the $100,000 fee hike to their employers. If you’re already living and working with a valid H1B visa in the US, the new fee does not apply to your employer.
  • If you are currently on a visit in India and hold a valid H1B visa, you don’t need to rush back to the US. The new visa fee does not impact your return. You can travel to the US any time after 21 September 2025 without worries.
  • The White House press secretary clarifies that $100,000 is not an annual fee for new H1B petitions. It’s a one-time fee that is subject to revision in the next 12 months.

Does the new visa fee $100,000 apply to H1B renewals?

The H1B visa price hike does not apply to H1B renewal petitions, according to the assistant to the White House Press Secretary. Yet, it lacks clarity on whether visa renewals scheduled in India after 21 September 2025 would incur the new $100,000 fee.
