Indian Passport fees are revised amid the controversy over the Ministry of External Affairs’ recent statement, “A passport is a travel document and not proof of citizenship.” Effective 1 July 2026, the passport fee hike across all categories – new, renewal, normal, tatkal, minor, old or damaged – is a surprise to Indians at home and abroad. Reportedly, the revision significantly hiked Indian Passport fees in 2026 after long 14 years.
New Indian Passport and renewal fees 2026
As per the revision, the normal application for a fresh passport or renewal costs more for both 36 pages and 60 pages. Starting 1 July, Rs 2500 is the new fee for a 36-page passport for adults, and Rs 3500 is the new fee for a 60-page passport for adults under normal processing.

Tatkal Indian Passport fees 2026
The Indian Passport rules 2026 include revised fees for tatkal (expedited) processing of fresh applications, renewal, and lost/damaged passport replacement. If you make last-minute flights booking for emergency travel, you must pay the revised tatkal service fee for passport renewal or replacement, since most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the day of departure or arrival.
