Recently, one of our customers missed his flight to USA from New Delhi though he checked in at Indira Gandhi International Airport on time. Actually, he was stopped from boarding because his Indian Visa had expired two days before his scheduled return trip. He was under the impression that he required a valid visa to enter India, not to exit India. The airline officials asked him whether he had the Exit Permit, a special clearance to exit India, that he had no idea about.
What is an India Exit Permit?
An Exit Permit is a sort of legal clearance for you to fly out of India when your Indian visa is expired, invalid, revoked, or not in order. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issues this official document to foreign visitors (including those of Indian origin without an OCI Card). Like entry visas, India has exit visas (special permits) for those with visa issues, depending on their nationality and origin.

When you need an Exit Permit from India?
You will likely need an exit permit in the following situations:
- You overstayed your visa. Even a short overstay requires clearance for departure from India.
- Your visa is cancelled or revoked. If your visa is no longer valid, you must regularize your departure.
- You changed your visa type, but it is not updated in the records. Any mismatch in visa status may require an official India exit permit.
- You lost your passport and got a new one in India. Your immigration records must be verified before departure.
- You are involved in legal or immigration matters. Exit clearance is required until the case is resolved or approved.
- You entered India on temporary or special permission. Some short-term or emergency entry cases need exit approval.
- Babies born to foreign nationals/citizens in India may require exit clearance before travel.
Do OCI Cardholders need an Exit Permit to leave India?
Since OCI Card is a lifelong visa to India, OCI Card holders don’t need any legal clearance like Exit Permit to catch return flights from India to USA or any other country. However, they may need an India Exit Permit in unpredictable events, like sudden OCI Card damage or loss. As per the OCI rules 2026, your OCI Card must be updated and intact while leaving India.
