If you are visiting India to look after an ill parent, attend to a family emergency or deal with an unavoidable situation, keep certain documents that explain why your trip became longer than expected. You should consider keeping:

• Medical and hospital records
• Flight tickets and changed itineraries
• Proof of your US home
• Employment records
• US tax documents
• Evidence of family and financial ties in America

A genuine reason for an extended stay does not automatically exempt you from immigration scrutiny, but proper documentation can help explain your circumstances.

What happens if you stay outside USA for 1 year or more?

The 1-year travel rule is particularly important for Green Card holders. If you remain outside the US for 12 months or longer, your Green Card generally cannot be used as a normal travel document for returning to America. An OCI kid born on or after 1 October 2023 must have a birth certificate as mandatory Proof of Date of Birth / Relationship, as per UIDAI’s current Aadhaar guidelines for overseas citizens of India.

How to apply for Aadhaar Card for an OCI kid in India in 2026

You need to complete the initial Aadhaar enrolment at a UIDAI Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Resident foreign nationals cannot rely entirely on an online application for the child’s enrolment. The process includes submitting demographic details, supporting documents, and biometrics as applicable.

Here is the process:

• Confirm that your child meets the 182-day India residence rule.
• Complete Form 8 and keep the required documents ready.
• Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your child.
• Submit the passport, OCI card, address proof and other required documents.
• Provide the child’s demographic information and biometrics as applicable.
• Check the details carefully before submitting the enrolment.
• Keep the acknowledgement slip and enrolment details for tracking.

UIDAI lists the child’s name, date of birth, gender, Indian address and email among the mandatory demographic details for resident foreign nationals. Photographs, fingerprints, and iris scans are collected as biometric information, subject to the child’s age and the applicable rules.

Aadhaar 2026 rules for OCI children under 5 and over 5

The Aadhaar Card enrolment process for an OCI child depends on the child’s age. Under the 2026 Aadhaar rules for OCIs, Head of Family (HoF)-based enrolment is generally mandatory for children below 5, but foreign nationals are specifically exempt from this requirement. Since an OCI child is treated as a resident foreign national for Aadhaar, this exception applies.

For children aged 5 to below 18, HoF-based enrolment is encouraged where applicable. A parent or legal guardian can act as the HoF. If HoF or Proof of Relationship documents are not available, the child can enroll through the applicable document-based process. Regardless of the age at enrolment, a child must undergo mandatory biometric updates at ages 5 and 15.

What if an OCI child’s Aadhaar application is rejected?

An Aadhaar application may face rejection for several reasons, including issues with documents, personal details, biometrics, or verification. For OCI children, photo or ID document mismatch is one of the most common reasons.

If your child’s Aadhaar application is rejected:

• Check the reason for rejection in the enrolment status or notification.
• Correct the error or fix the issue before applying again.
• If the issue involves a photo mismatch, check the child’s photograph and personal details across the passport and OCI records.
• If the OCI record requires an update under the applicable rules, use the official OCI Miscellaneous Services.
• After an approved update, you can download the updated digital e-OCI Card and carry it along with the child’s passport, Date of Birth proof, Form 8, and other required documents when re-enrolling for Aadhaar.

How long is Aadhaar valid for OCI minors?

An Aadhaar Card issued to OCI Cardholders is valid for 10 years from the date of enrolment. It does not come with lifetime validity.

OCI child vs NRI child: What is the difference

Do not confuse an OCI child with an NRI child. An OCI child is treated as a foreign national and must meet the 182-day requirement. An NRI is an Indian citizen and holds a valid Indian passport. NRIs can apply for Aadhaar without meeting the 182-day residence condition.

The 10-day email heads-up from CBP aims to prevent non-immigrant visitors and temporary visa holders from overstaying in America. This is integral to the federal agency’s Traveler Compliance Check system that tracks I-94 records of arrival and departure.

What CBP’s 10-day reminder means 

Statistically, 65,000 to 85,000 individuals overstay their temporary US visas every year, according to the Department of Homeland Security. They account for nearly 40% of the total non-immigrant population living unlawfully in the United States. The remaining 10-day authorized stay notification is CBP’s deliberate effort to reduce the number of US visa overstayers for the sake of national security and public safety.

The US immigration system is rolling out the 10-day email reminder targeting initially B1/B2 visitors and those who enter America under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It will gradually expand to other temporary visa categories, including F, J, H-1B, and H2, in the coming days.

While staying in the US, some visitors and temporary visa holders get oblivious of the electronic I-94 record that shows a specific period of time permitted to them in the US, regardless of the visa validity or expiration date. CBP’s 10-day stay alert makes it easier for them to check the official I-94 record and exit the US on time without accruing visa overstay.

What if your parents have already left the US?

In some cases, visitors may receive the remaining 10-day stay warning even after they leave the United States. It may happen when a departure is not logged timely in the I-94 system due to some electronic failure. If it ever happens to your parents, the system would flag them as visa overstayers, void their visa before validity expires, and cause re-entry bars depending on the period of overstaying (unlawful presence) in the US.

Emirates’ policy for passenger name correction

If you have legally changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or any other reason, you can request a name update at any point during your journey by providing the necessary legal documents. Air India’s rules for fixing passenger name mismatch

For group bookings or cases requiring extensive amendments, a fee of $100 (USD) applies. Lufthansa’s passenger name correction policy 

As of July 1, 2024, Lufthansa scrapped flight ticket name correction fees, making approved corrections completely free. Yet, full name transfers to another person are not allowed.

Lufthansa has strict name correction rules, especially for flights from India to USA, where passport details must match 100%. Minor corrections can sometimes be handled through APIS Data (SSR DOCS) if it’s clear that the ticket refers to the same person. If an error is noticed immediately after ticket issuance, passengers can either void the ticket or request a refund within the ‘grace period’ (next calendar day).

Passenger name change in Singapore Airlines tickets 

It is advised that your name on international flight tickets matches your passport while booking Singapore Airlines flights. However, minor spelling corrections are permitted for a fee of USD 50. Corrections allowed include fixing up to three characters, adjusting a salutation, correcting a married/maiden name, or adding a middle name. Complete name changes are strictly prohibited, as tickets are non-transferable. Additionally, once travel has begun, name corrections are no longer allowed.

Turkish Airlines policy for passenger name spelling mistakes

Double-check your name and other traveler names in the airline tickets after making a reservation and before web check-in. Your name and its spelling must match the one on your passport. Turkish Airlines allows minor name corrections like fixing humble spelling mistakes through the Manage Booking section on their website. The passenger name correction fee may vary depending on your travel class and fare type. It is recommended you contact the airline directly or check their website. British Airways’ policy for name spelling correction

British Airways does not generally allow traveler name changes. However, under special circumstances, they permit minor corrections up to three characters for a fee. A request for flight ticket name correction must be made via their call center, with fees varying by region: £45/€50 for UK/EU call centers and $60 for North America. If your name has changed due to marriage or divorce, you can request a correction to match your passport by providing official documents. Full name changes or ticket transfers to another person are strictly prohibited.

Cathay Pacific 

Name corrections are quite flexible on Cathay Pacific tickets, irrespective of flight deals to India from USA and vice versa, as long as the actually ticketed traveler is the same. You can request changes like adding or removing a middle name, fixing typos, correcting title or gender, or swapping the order of first, middle, and last names. Even name changes are allowed on legal grounds like marriage and adoption, provided your date of birth remains the same and there are documents evidencing the name update.

Cathay Pacific permits the above corrections for free of charge. A request for name change is not honored if it’s a different person entirely. Also, making a name change through an agent without the airline’s approval could incur a penalty of USD 60 (or local currency equivalent), and your entire booking might be canceled without warning. In some cases, additional fees may apply, so it’s best to contact the airline if you’re unsure.

United Airlines

Since there is no much clear information about United Airlines’ policy for name corrections, we reached out to their live chat for clarity. The agent confirmed that once a ticket is issued, the passenger name on it cannot be changed, and the ticket can’t be used by anyone else. If you need to change the name, you’ll have to cancel the booking, pay a service fee, and rebook the ticket in the correct name. Some users on Reddit also shared similar experiences, saying that in the event of a major mistake, the only option is to cancel and buy a new ticket. So, it’s really important to double-check your name on United Airlines flight tickets before confirming your travel.

With the faster adoption of biometrics technology from passport to e-gate boarding to immigration, travelers’ data privacy risks are multiplying. Driven by fears of personal data theft from passports, US and Indian travelers are resorting to popular security hacks, like using aluminum foil to cover the passport booklet and protect the data embedded in it. Recently, wrapping electronic passports in aluminum foil has become a viral trend.

But the question is – do you really need a kitchen staple to secure your e-passport? Let’s decode how it works.

What data US Passport’s RFID chip contains 

The back cover of America’s Next Generation Passports (NGP) has a small RFID chip embedded close to the spine. The US started issuing Next Generation Passports with stronger security features and better durability in 2022. The RFID chip contains the traveler’s name, date of birth, passport number, biometric data, a digital copy of the photo, and a cryptographic signature that helps CBP officers check whether the passport is tampered.

How aluminum foil works as a passport security trick 

Basically, the US Passport’s RFID chip is passive unless an electronic reader in the close vicinity transmits a radio signal, turns the chip on, and reads the data. A regular (hidden) RF reader or scanner can read the chip within the range of 6 inches, according to cybersecurity experts. Such claims have popularized the use of aluminum foil to cover passports during busy travel times since 2022.

Aluminum foil covering works like a Faraday cage – a metal-like conductive material that blocks and absorbs electromagnetic waves (radio signals) to prevent unauthorized remote scanning of passport chips in crowded parts of busy airports, like baggage check-in, security checkpoints, and boarding areas. Many US citizens claim that the Faraday cage like tricks help them travel smart with their passport details and biometric data safe from secret reading.

US Passport security features vs aluminum foil covering

The logic of using aluminum foil is also countered with the view that the US Passport’s RFID chip is locked behind a cryptographic protocol – Basic Access Control – to protect the data even if your passport is open and close to a hacker in a public place. Unlike Apple AirTag or other tracking devices, the passport chip does not provide live location data.

“Aluminum foil covering has disadvantages that viral reels don’t show. This kitchen staple is the cheapest instant hack but not a fool-proof solution to e-passport holders’ fears of data theft. The reckless use of aluminum foil can rub against certain areas of the passport booklet and, thus, it can scratch sensitive features. Any damage will render your valid passport invalid for travel. What is India’s duty-free allowance for electronics from USA?

Under India’s new baggage rules, 2026, the duty-free allowance has been increased to Rs 75,000 for importing electronics to India from USA and other countries. Previously, it was Rs 50,000. If you are an Indian passport holder or a foreign citizen of Indian origin residing abroad for more than 3 days prior to your scheduled travel to India, you are eligible for the enhanced duty-free allowance. Effective 2 February, you are entitled to duty-free clearance of your personal electronic items up to Rs 75,000 on the total value.

Do I need to declare dutiable electronic imports to India and how?  

India has digitized the dutiable baggage declaration process for international arrivals, irrespective of nationality. As per the Indian customs rules 2026, you must declare dutiable electronic imports in Form CBD-I online (www.icegate.gov.in) or the Athithi mobile app, three days before your scheduled arrival in India. Updating the electronic declaration details is allowed even after Form CBD-I is submitted.

Can I carry two laptops to India without customs duty? 

Yes, you can pack in two laptops without worrying about India’s customs duty at the entry airport. If one laptop is new, the other must be in use. The new baggage rules, 2026, allows duty-free clearance of one new laptop or notebook per adult passenger arriving in India. Precisely, you must be 18 years old or above, and the new laptop or notebook must be for your personal/family use or gifting.

If the second laptop is old and used, your baggage will go duty-free through Indian Customs. The customs officer may need you to open the laptop and show whether it is in use. Otherwise, you need to pay customs duty for bringing a second new laptop to India from USA or any other country. Well, the good news is that the customs duty will be cut to a flat 10% from the basic 20%, starting 01 April 2026.

I purchased two laptops in the US. One is boxed and the other is open. Do I have to pay India’s customs duty?

If you’re an Indian or Indian-origin foreign citizen traveling back to India from USA, you may be eligible for duty-free allowances under transfer of residence, depending on the duration of your stay abroad. Your stay in the US for 3-12 months makes you eligible for duty-free clearance of your personal belongings for up to Rs 1,50,000. If you are returning after staying abroad for one to 2 years, your personal belongings may go duty-free up to Rs 3,00,000. The duty-free allowance goes up to Rs 7,50,000 under transfer of residence, if you are traveling back to India after more than 2 years of stay abroad.

Customs rules to re-enter India with the same electronic items that you take abroad

In case of an international trip shorter than 3 months, you are not eligible for India’s duty-free allowance under transfer of residence. You should travel abroad with valid documents so that during re-entry to India, you can prove your electronic items were purchased in India. There’s another way to get duty-free clearance on arrival in India. You can declare your personal electronic items to the customs officer at the departure airport and get an export certificate before traveling to USA or any other country. The same electronic devices get customs clearance without any taxes on return to India.

How many electronic devices can I bring from USA to India? 

Usually, you can pack in one laptop, one tablet, and one mobile phone as part of your bona fide baggage while flying from USA to India. If the total value of your dutiable purchases in the US exceeds India’s new duty-free limit of Rs 75,000, under the new baggage rules 2026 for resident Indians and NRIs, you must declare it to the customs officials through the red channel at the entry airport in India. You must have an import license to bring electronics in excess. Otherwise, your electronic imports in excess will be confiscated by India’s customs officials.

Can I carry two mobile phones on flights from USA to India? 

In current times of social media, online shopping, OTT entertainment and multitasking, having two mobile phones is not a surprise even to Indian customs officials. Though the customs rules for inbound travelers carrying electronics to India from abroad do not allow more than one phone per person, you are safe as long as the total value of two phones is within the duty-free allowance. If you carry a new phone (in a sealed box) other than your personal mobile device in use, you have to declare it, show the purchase receipt and state the purpose, such as gifting.
