Tamil Nadu is tightening the mobile phone rules inside its major temples. From 1 September 2026, devotees will not be allowed to carry mobile phones inside major temples across the state. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has directed temples to ban mobile phones inside their premises to curb photography, video recording, selfies, and social media reels. The move is aimed at protecting temple sanctity and preventing phone use from disrupting worship and darshan.

What are Tamil Nadu temple rules for mobile phones in 2026?

Under the latest HR&CE directions, all Tamil Nadu temples must prevent devotees from carrying mobile phones inside. Temple authorities have been directed to:

  • Set up secure mobile phone deposit facilities at entrances
  • Collect a uniform fee of ₹5 per phone, where applicable
  • Issue receipts through the Integrated Temple Management System (ITMS)
  • Display signboards about the phone restriction
  • Make announcements through public address systems
  • Prevent photography, videography, selfies and social media reels

The department has also directed temples to prevent photography or video recording of VIPs, public figures and film personalities inside temple premises without permission. VIP visits should not disturb ordinary devotees or affect their darshan.

Current mobile phone rules at Tamil Nadu temples

The September 1 Tamil Nadu temple phone ban does not mean every temple is starting a phone ban for the first time. Some major Tamil Nadu temples already have strict restrictions.

Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai: Mobile phones and electronic devices are prohibited inside. Devotees can deposit them at designated counters outside.

Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple: Phones and camera-equipped electronic gadgets are prohibited inside the hill temple. Deposit counters are available, with the system charging ₹5.

Tiruchendur Subramania Swamy Temple: The phone ban is already being strictly enforced. Since July 2026, devotees have been screened at entry points, and four phone-deposit counters operate along the Giri Prakaram. The deposit fee is ₹5.

Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram: Mobile phones are reportedly allowed inside, while photography and videography are strictly restricted.

Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur: Current visitor information indicates that phones and handheld cameras are permitted in the outer areas, while photography is restricted around the sanctum and during rituals.

Why Tamil Nadu temples call for mobile phone ban?

The latest directions follow earlier Madras High Court orders and HR&CE instructions on restricting mobile phone use in temples. The department said devotees continue to use phones for photographs, videos, selfies and reels. Officials believe such activities can disturb worship and affect the sanctity of temple premises.
