What is e-OCI? India Launches Digital OCI Card for Seamless Access, Safe Use, Faster Immigration

After updating the OCI rules with revised fee structure effective 1 April 2026, India launched e-OCI Card, the electronic version of physical OCI Card booklets. Starting 1 May 2026, India digitalized the OCI system and process, from registration to documentation to reissuance, through the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026. The digital overhaul of the OCI program for Indian-origin foreign citizens, their foreign spouses and children, makes it smarter, safer, and simpler.

What is e-OCI? Who will get e-OCI Card?

e-OCI is nothing but the digital version of the OCI Card, eliminating the hassles of carrying and the worries of losing a physical booklet. You can store and access the OCI card digitally anywhere and anytime. New applicants will receive e-OCI on priority, and the existing OCI Card holders will get the electronic version in a phased manner, maybe, during reissuance. The existing physical OCI cards will remain valid even after they get the digital upgrade.

“Even if you are upgraded to e-OCI from the physical card, we recommend carrying the physical booklet while traveling to and from India, until foreign airlines’ staff and crew members get acclimatized with the changes. Some airlines, especially European and American, insist on checking physical travel documents unless they get an official bulletin from the Indian Embassy,” said Sourav Agarwal, Senior Editor at Indian Eagle, a leading air-ticketing partner of overseas Indians.

Key benefits of e-OCI over physical card

  • Faster processing within 15 business days unlike 6-to-8-week for physical issuance
  • Easier to update with less paperwork
  • Seamless access on mobile phones
  • No loss or damage risks. Absolutely safe online.
  • Faster immigration verification at Indian airports

India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 removed the earlier requirement to submit applications “in duplicate” by digitalizing the OCI documentation.

Since the electronic OCI can be accessed anywhere and anytime, you may never need an Exit Permit to fly out of India unless your OCI card is revoked just before your departure from India.

By December 2026, e-OCI shall integrate access to facial recognition lanes for touchless entry or exit at international airports in India.

If you have not yet submitted your biometrics to register for India’s Fast Track Immigration program, you can share the biometric data for automatic registration through e-OCI once your digital OCI credential is issued. You won’t have to visit an FRRO office or any other designated center in India.

How to get e-OCI or make e-OCI registration

  • Apply on the official portal – OCIservices.gov.in
  • Fill out Form XXVIII online
  • Provide your personal details, including valid phone number and email ID
  • Take a printout of the completed form
  • Upload your latest passport
  • Upload your biometric photographs (high resolution with neutral expression, light background, precise frontal view of the face, and shoulders visible in the frame
  • e-Sign declarations and complete verification
  • Pay the applicable fees online and submit
  • Receive an acknowledgement number for tracking the status in real time
  • Visit the nearest VSF Global Center for document verification, if required
  • Access your e-OCI on a mobile device anytime, anywhere

e-OCI system streamlines OCI renunciation and cancellation

If you want to surrender your OCI Card voluntarily, you can do it easily online by filling out the Form XXXI on the dedicated OCI portal. No need to travel and physically visit a designated center. The electronic system makes renunciation of OCI membership a lot easier. If you hold a physical OCI Card booklet, you must submit it in either case, voluntary renunciation or involuntary cancellation (by the government of India). Upon successful delivery to the authorities, you will receive e-acknowledgement regarding removal of your name from official records.

This latest OCI Card news is brought to you by IndianEagle.com, the most trusted travel-booking company in the US for Americans, Indians and other immigrants. India’s digital e-OCI FAQs

Do I have to convert my existing OCI Card to e-OCI?

All existing physical OCI Cards continue to be valid. So, there is no need to convert your OCI Card to e-OCI. When you update it the next time for a change of address, contact number, or any other particulars, the system may issue electronic OCI by default, which you would be able to access online.

Is my existing OCI Card valid for travel to India?

Of course, it is. As of now, fresh applicants are likelier to get e-OCI on priority. Even if you get digital OCI, your physical booklet will remain valid.

Thanks for the info. I am also curious about the costs of converting a standard e OCI into an E-OCI. Furthermore, I have a question regarding departure. My flight from India to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is often around 03:00 in the morning. I think there are multiple flights during the night hours. It is particularly busy at security, and it is extremely busy at customs. I can understand that it is very busy at security. But I cannot understand the endlessly long lines at customs. There are enough counters, but most of them are unmanned. Also, almost all of them are extremely slow. Sometimes I think they work so slowly on purpose. I don’t really see any benefit yet to the fact that my wife and I have an OCI. My question: Surely it must be possible to designate one or more counters for OCI cardholders? Just like at arrival?

Hi Sharin! You need to get your child’s OCI card re-issued once he turned 20 years. You can get it done online – OCIservices.gov.in.

    Hi IndianEagle,
I really love this format of articles where folks can comment on. It is an awesome feature! Most media (both western, as well as Indian media) donot have a facility to comment on the articles itself. Well appreciated!

    Hello,
My wife and son renewed the passport. I already filled out the passport updating form in OCI services 20 days ago but still haven’t received any confirmation regarding update new passport.
For my Wife I haven’t applied yet for new passport update with existing OCI.
Can my son and wife apply for e-OCI during new passport update with existing physical OCI card?

Hi Ajay! While having an OCI Card in physical form, you don’t need to apply for e-OCI separately. New applicants are currently prioritized for e-OCI.

Hi Sandha! PIO cards are not valid for travel to India any more. You need to apply for an OCI Card. Being a new applicant, you may get e-OCI.

Will minors get E-OCI too? Where is it saved? Can both parents save it on their phones? How will it work in case of minors?

Hi Vishwa! New applicants have more chances to get e-OCI than existing physical OCI Cardholders (during updation or reissuance).

Hi Mr Mehta! If you got a new US passport after you received the OCI card, you need to update the passport details. Otherwise, not required.

My daughter lives in the US and has OCI. However, she has completed 20 years, and she received new US passport. As per OCI rules, one has to renew OCI after receiving new passport after reaching 20 years of age. Will she have to apply for e-OCI now or old paper OCI?

Hi Prashant! Your daughter needs to apply for reissuance of OCI Card online. She may get the electronic version this time. However, it is not guaranteed. E-OCI is gradually rolling out.
