Delhi is to get India’s first smart city in the country. The national capital is the first target of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to develop 100 smart cities across India, according to M. Venkaiah Naidu, Urban Development Minister.
With a smart city upgrading the civic infrastructure, Delhi will evolve into a global city on the lines of London in the United Kingdom and San Francisco in the United States. Once the proposed smart city is incorporated into the map, Delhi will enjoy the next-level status in different niches including entertainment and tourism. With entertainment zones like Disneyland and Universal Studios, the smart city project will transform Delhi into a global destination.
The smart city will be planned and built like a sub city in the Delhi NCR region. It will be equipped with the latest and most advanced technologies. It will have state-of-the-art infrastructure with 24-hour water supply, round-the-clock electricity, and world-class water conservation & waste management techniques. Like San Francisco, Delhi’s smart city will be powered with green technology and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Besides London and San Francisco, Barcelona in Spain is the other city to inspire the model of India’s first smart city. India is looking to implement lessons on preservation of traditional architecture from Barcelona, where age-old monuments are meticulously preserved in sync with development of modern skyscrapers. Delhi is home to the Islamic architecture and the Mughal heritage of India.
Apart from being national capital, Delhi is the heart of North India. Delhi is the center of several tourism circuits spreading across the neighboring states Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, and Madhya Pradesh. Thousands of foreign tourists fly to Delhi every year. The smart city will help Delhi to accommodate well-do-to tourists, business travelers and NRIs, and cater to their needs efficiently.
