India has introduced new passport rules 2026, effective February 15, bringing important procedural updates for residents as well as overseas Indians. Over the past 12 months, passport policies have steadily evolved, from simplifying post-marriage passport name change procedures to strengthening passport photo compliance under ICAO standards. If you are eyeing your Indian passport renewal in 2026, applying for a fresh passport, or submitting an application for your child, understanding the latest passport-related changes and updates in India can help avoid documentation errors and get the passport issued in a very short time.

India’s new passport rules effective 15 February 2026

The latest rules for Indian Passport holders are part of the upgraded Passport Seva Program 2.0 that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rolled out to modernize services, reduce delays, and enhance document security. Here are the key changes Indians and persons of Indian-origin living in the USA and other countries must know:

India's passport rules 2026, new Indian passport rules for NRIs

Simplified documentation and less paperwork

One of the most notable changes is less paperwork for fresh applications. Applying for a new passport in India no longer requires you to get a thick bunch of document photocopies and visit a Passport Seva Kendra multiple times. Under the passport rules in 2026:

  • You can upload documents directly to the Passport Seva portal
  • Aadhaar and other government-issued IDs are prioritized as primary proof
  • Physical submission of multiple certificates is no longer required in most cases
  • Applications with incomplete or mismatched details will be rejected

This move is intended to make passport processing faster and more convenient, especially for first-time applicants and renewals. Applicants are advised to carefully review every detail before submitting the application, because though the process is simpler, it allows no room for mistakes.

Faster and digitized police verification in India

Police verification often caused delays in the passport application processing. However, it has become more streamlined and faster in 2026.

Reports indicate that:

  • Verification requests are now digitally integrated with local police systems
  • Faster background checks shorten processing timelines in several states
  • In some cases, passports may be issued before physical police verification is completed

Complete online application and real-time tracking

The application process has become more digital and user-friendly under the updated passport system.

You can now:

  • Complete the entire application form online
  • Upload required documents digitally
  • Book appointments easily
  • Track real-time status updates

Among the new Indian Passport rules in 2026, the digital-first approach reduces dependency on intermediaries and improves transparency throughout the process.

Simplified passport rules for minors

Families applying for children’s passports are also going to benefit from the streamlined system. To ease delays in children’s applications, authorities now readily accept:

  • Digital birth certificates
  • School identity cards
  • Simplified parental consent form

However, parental authorization and identity verification remain mandatory.

Accuracy and consistency of information is the focus

MEA highlights the importance of accurate information, as applications with missing details or incorrect uploads will be rejected for sure.

  • Details like full name, date of birth, and address must match in all documents.
  • Discrepancies can delay processing or lead to rejection.
  • Applicants must verify every document before submission.

What documents are required for Indian passport renewal in 2026?

  • Aadhaar card
  • Old passport
  • Updated address proof if changed

For NRIs applying for passport renewals in India

  • Old passport
  • Proof of Indian address if applicable
  • Valid visa or residence permit abroad

Most travelers think of Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore, Lufthansa, and British Airways while looking for best flight deals from USA to India. No doubt, they are best in class. There’s an award-winning, 4-star rated airline that ranked second for its on-time performance in 2026. It is Saudia Airlines that Skytrax Awards referred to as the “World’s Most Improved Airline.” Its competitive fares yet good-quality service make it a strong contender to popular airlines for intercontinental travel. Some of the benefits of flying Saudia Airlines from USA to India are:

  • Good network in India
  • Comfortable Economy Class seats
  • Personal care kits in Economy
  • Traditional Arabic Coffee and dates
  • Kids-friendly inflight activities
  • Strict no-alcohol policy
  • Safe layovers in Jeddah
  • Visa-free international transit
  • Free 96-hour stopover visa
  • Highly competitive ticket prices

Saudia Airlines destinations in India and USA

Saudia Airlines’ India network is as big as that of other Middle Eastern airlines. Saudia flights cater to not only New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi but also tier 2 cities like Lucknow in north and Kozhikode in south. The only airline operating one-stop flights from USA to Lucknow is Saudia. No hassles of connecting to Lucknow through the busiest airports in Delhi and Mumbai.

Saudia Airlines’ US network includes three major gateways – New York JFK, Washington DC IAD, and Los Angeles LAX. Though its direct service to the US is limited, its codeshare partners (Delhi, American Airlines, and JetBlue) can fly you to other US cities through those gateway airports. This means you can fly with Saudia from India to your final destination in the US on a single ticket.

Saudia Airlines Economy Guest Class facilities

Unlike other airlines, Saudia calls the Economy cabin ‘Guest Class’ aligning to its hospitality-centric branding. The seat pitch liberally ranges between 32 and 34 inches across the widebody fleet of B777s and B787s. Most of Saudia’s Economy Class travel reviews are positive mainly because of the “Articulated Movement” seat design that adapts to the passenger’s body movement for optimal comfort during long-haul flights. The Economy Guest Class seats feature:

  • Adjustable padded headrest
  • Lumbar support reclines
  • Manually operated footrests
  • “Articulated Movement” seat design

Saudia Business Class flight experiences

Being a dry airline, Saudia has a strict ‘no alcohol’ policy even for Business Class guests. However, traditional Arabic Coffee and other premium beverages are served to guests. Saudia’s Business Class reviews highlight culturally sensitive dining service to premium travelers with different dietary preferences. There are Arabic, western, and destination-inspired dishes on the multi-course inflight menu. The First Class elevates the service with chef-curated personalized meals and gourmet presentation.

78 to 82-inch flat-bed seating is among Saudia Airlines’ best experiences on business class flights. Needless to say, it varies depending on aircraft and its seating configuration. The new aircraft like B787-9 Dreamliner in the fleet offers direct aisle access, privacy dividers, and personal storage space in the Business Class. The inflight entertainment monitors vary depending on aircraft; premium travel cabins have larger screens up to 23 inches.

Saudia Airlines’ Jeddah Airport hub facilities

Is it safe for non-Muslim travelers to transit via Jeddah Airport? Indian Eagle’s customer service team receives this query at times. Jeddah airport layovers are as safe as other Middle East airports, according to many Indians who travelled with Saudia Airlines between USA and India. The new terminal of Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz Airport is designed as a modern, spacious transit hub for international-to-international flight connections.

Jeddah Airport’ transit hotel in Terminal 1 makes layovers (especially during night) comfortable for international transit passengers. Aerotel Jeddah Hotel offers rooms for short stays within the transit area, which does not require immigration clearance. In addition, there are quite rest zones and modern sleeping pods at hourly rates making it affordable to reax.

Jeddah International Airport’s T1 facilities also include premium lounges, prayer rooms, free seating areas, free Wi-Fi, charging stations, and food outlets, both local and international. The contemporary design makes Saudia Airlines’ primary hub unique.

What makes Saudia a family-friendly airline

Saudia is not just a safe and good airline for USA to India long-haul travel; it is family-friendly too. Saudia is one of the few airlines to provide personal care kits even in Economy cabins on long overnight flights. Children under 12 are offered dedicated kids bags with books, games, and activity items that help them fly engaged on long-haul routes, for instance, JFK to Hyderabad, and LAX to New Delhi. Inflight bassinets are available on request in advance. Special child and infant meals can be pre-ordered.

The alcohol-free environment on board is one of the benefits of flying Saudia Airlines for senior citizens, solo women travelers, and families with children.

96-hour stopover visa in Saudi Arabia

Like its Middle East rivals, Saudia Airlines offers free 96-hour stopover visa to international transit passengers, irrespective of their nationality. The stopover visa allows to stay in Jeddah, Riyadh, or any other part of Saudi Arabia for up to 4 days. If you book Saudia flight tickets with stopover plans, your passport must have minimum 6-month validity. It is better to explore Jeddah than sitting in the terminal during a long layover.

Can Indians with an expired US visa travel through Saudi Arabia?

Yes, Saudia Airlines onboards Indians with expired US visas and flies them to the home country, like Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines. It is highly recommended you must spend the layover within the international transit area, and carry your latest I-94 record and other valid documents, like I-20 or valid status proof, to ascertain your legal stay in the US.

Saudia Airlines’ new B787-9 Dreamliner

“Saudia has significant long-haul flight upgrades in the pipeline. From July 2026, the airline plans to induct its brand-new B787-9 Dreamliner aiming to upgrade customer experience on Washington DC flights. The aircraft offers better cabin pressure, improved humidity levels, larger windows, and quieter engines. Recently, among our leading partners, Air India’s fleet induct the same aircraft and showcased it at Hyderabad’s Wings India show,” said Dheeraj Duvvuru, CEO of IndianEagle.com.

Gold is next to God for Indians, no matter where they are. Most Indians immigrating to the United States do carry their gold items, such as wedding jewelry, inherited ornaments, coins, etc. They travel back to India with the same for personal use at family functions or gifting to dear ones. Understandably, traveling with this precious yellow metal in any form is subject to some regulations and restrictions. Indian Eagle, your trusted travel-booking partner, brings you this guide for

  • India’s duty-free gold jewelry allowance for NRIs
  • Indian customs rules for gold jewelry purchased abroad
  • How to save India’s customs duty on your gold jewelry in excess
  • Temporary baggage import certificate from Indian Customs
  • Export certificate for taking your gold abroad from India and its validity
  • How to declare your gold (beyond duty-free allowance) online while flying to India

What is duty-free allowance for carrying gold jewelry to India?

India’s Baggage and Customs Rules 2026 simplified the duty-free gold jewelry allowance for overseas Indians by removing the value-based cap. Among NRIs from USA and other countries, women travelers can bring 40-gram gold jewelry and male travelers can bring only 20-gram gold jewelry duty-free to India. The weight-based duty-free allowance is effective starting February 2026 for those Indians and Indian-origin people who have been abroad for more than 12 months.

Also, the same gender-wise duty-free gold allowance applies to NRI children traveling to India. This allowance does not extend to gold bars, coins, and bullion – which must be declared and are subject to customs duty in India.

Traveling to India with your gold jewelry purchased abroad? Check India’s customs rules

Usually, carrying gold or diamond jewelry beyond the duty-free allowance is subject to customs duty on arrival in India, irrespective of where it was purchased. However, there is a way out if you want to carry your personal jewelry (in excess) for a family function in India.

Make sure you carry the purchase receipts and proof of personal use. During checking, convince the Indian customs officer that your jewelry is not a commercial import to India and that you are carrying it for your personal use at a family wedding. Show your return flight ticket and proof of the family function, if there’s any, as supporting documents. It is also advisable to keep photographs of yourself wearing the same jewelry, as this can help establish personal ownership if required.

Also, you may obtain a temporary baggage import certificate from the customs on arrival in India, according to the 2026 customs rules that permit overseas Indians to bring their personal jewelry (in large quantity) without paying any duty. You must take back the same jewelry after attending a wedding or any other family event in India.

Customs rules for bringing back to India your gold jewelry that you had taken to USA

If you obtained an export certificate from Indian Customs for taking your gold jewelry from India to USA (or anywhere else), you can bring the same jewelry back to India without paying customs duty. The export certificate serves as the official proof that you are re-importing to India the same jewelry that you had taken out of India earlier. Irrespective of your period of stay abroad, you can bring back jewelry to India from USA, over and above the duty-free allowance. The jewelry must match the details mentioned in the export certificate.

How to get an export certificate from customs officers before flying out of India?

At a departure international airport in India, you can approach the Customs office prior to check-in and declare the jewelry you are taking abroad. The officer will examine the items, record details such as description and weight, and issue an export certificate. Keep this certificate safely and present it to Customs when you return to India. If the jewelry matches the recorded details, it can be re-imported without paying customs duty, even if it exceeds the normal duty-free allowance.

What is the validity of the export certificate?

The export certificate will remain valid for six months from the date of issuance, or till the time you return to India, whichever is earlier.

How much gold you can carry to India in cabin/hand baggage?

Not everyone is allowed to import gold to India as part of cabin baggage. Only Indian residents, NRIs, and OCI cardholders can import gold as baggage, provided they stayed abroad for over 1 year. You can import up to 1 kg of gold in your carry-on bag on international flights to India from USA and other countries.

Customs duty for carrying gold coins or bars to India

Yes, you can carry gold coins or gold bars to India, but they are treated as gold in raw form and do not qualify for any duty-free allowance. Gold coins and bullion must be declared to Customs on arrival and are subject to customs duty on the total value. As per the current customs tariff structure following the July 2024 duty revision and continued under Budget 2026, gold imports attract around 6% customs duty, which includes 5% Basic Customs Duty and 1% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess. The duty is calculated on the assessable value determined by Customs at the airport.

This guide explaining the customs rules for NRIs and OCI cardholders carrying gold to India is brought to you by IndianEagle.com, a leading US-based travel tech company offering unbeatable flight deals from USA to India and beyond. Save the code – IEHOLITB – for the upcoming Indian Eagle discount offer, from February 23 to 28, 2026 (CST hours) and get an additional $25 off on your travel to India.

How to declare online excess gold to Indian customs before arrival

To declare your gold at Indian customs, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Red Channel at the airport if carrying gold jewelry above the duty-free allowance for men or women. Green Channel is only for passengers with non-dutiable and duty-free items.
  • Complete the Customs Declaration Form (Form 1) with details of your gold, flight, and stay duration abroad.
  • You can also declare your gold online prior to boarding international flights through ATITHI mobile app provided by Indian customs.
  • At the Red Channel desk, show your gold items along with receipts, invoices, or purity certificates to the customs officer.
  • Customs calculate the duty based on the declared weight of the gold coins and/or bars. Pay the duty in INR or a convertible foreign currency. Once duty is paid and documents verified, you are cleared to exit.
  • Customs let your gold/diamond jewelry (in excess) go duty-free if you provide a temporary baggage import certificate or a previously obtained export certificate (explained above).

India’s Union Budget 2026 ushered in a new era of simplified customs rules and taxation for international travel. Both the customs duty and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) have been significantly reduced to encourage inbound and outbound travel for Indians, starting 1 April 2026. On one hand, the customs duty on foreign imports has been halved from the basic 20% to 10% for resident Indians and NRIs, under the new baggage rules. On the other, the TCS rate on overseas travel from India got a major cut.

What is TCS on foreign travel from India?

In India, Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is an advance tax collected on your overseas travel expenses. It applies primarily to international tour packages, like Dubai Experience, booked from India. The tax is deposited with the government under your PAN and can later be adjusted or refunded when you file your income tax return. TCS is not an additional cost, but a temporary collection to ensure your tax compliance and track your international travel spending.

India's travel TCS rules, TCS rates on foreign travel from India, TCS on overseas tour packages
The AI-generated image is for only illustration purpose

Old TCS vs New TCS rates on foreign tours in 2026

Old TCS rates: Before the Union Budget 2026, TCS on overseas tour packages applied in slabs:

  • 5% TCS on tour packages costing up to ₹10 lakh in a fiscal
  • 20% TCS on tour package prices exceeding ₹10 lakh in a fiscal

Earlier, a foreign tour of ₹20 lakh would attract ₹2.5–3 lakh as TCS. It meant a large upfront cash outflow for expensive family or luxury trips.

New travel TCS rates: The Union Budget 2026 removed the slabs by introducing a flat 2% TCS on international travel packages, regardless of total costs. The slab system and the ₹10 lakh threshold have been eliminated from the system. There is no minimum booking value for the new 2% TCS.

Know how much TCS to pay on foreign trips from India in 2026:

  • ₹10,000 TCS on ₹5 lakh overseas tour package
  • ₹20,000 TCS on ₹10 lakh overseas tour package
  • ₹40,000 TCS on ₹20 lakh overseas tour package

The flat 2% TCS on international trips clearly denotes that booking tour packages for Dubai, Singapore, Bali, Sri Lanka, or Europe from India will be a lot cheaper for Indians, starting in April 2026.

Is there TCS on booking international flights from India?

“As per the TCS rules for foreign travel, there is no TCS on booking international flight tickets from India and the usage of non-Indian credit cards for the same. The TCS rate applies on overseas tour packages including hotels, sightseeing, local transportation, and/or flights,” said Dheeraj Duvvuru, CEO of Indian Eagle, a leading international travel tech company booking budget air travel between USA, India and other countries.

Alongside the reduced TCS on international tours in 2026, you can save more by traveling to visa-free countries like Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines from India, since no visa cost is involved.

No point in saving on flight tickets to India if you end up paying a hefty customs duty or penalty for carrying electronics in excess or above the duty-free limit. You must know and comply with the latest customs rules to carry electronics, including gadgets and instruments, from USA to India for personal use and/or gifting. Our guide on USA to India travel with electronic devices aims to sensitize you about the customs duty obligations and exemptions for overseas Indians and tourists of foreign origin. This should not be construed as legal advice. Bookmark and share this guide for a smooth arrival experience in India.

What is India’s duty-free allowance for electronics from USA?

Under India’s new baggage rules, 2026, the duty-free allowance has been increased to Rs 75,000 for importing electronics to India from USA and other countries. Previously, it was Rs 50,000. If you are an Indian passport holder or a foreign citizen of Indian origin residing abroad for more than 3 days prior to your scheduled travel to India, you are eligible for the enhanced duty-free allowance. Effective 2 February, you are entitled to duty-free clearance of your personal electronic items up to Rs 75,000 on the total value.

Do I need to declare dutiable electronic imports to India and how?

India has digitized the dutiable baggage declaration process for international arrivals, irrespective of nationality. As per the Indian customs rules 2026, you must declare dutiable electronic imports in Form CBD-I online (www.icegate.gov.in) or the Athithi mobile app, three days before your scheduled arrival in India. Updating the electronic declaration details is allowed even after Form CBD-I is submitted.

Can I carry two laptops to India without customs duty?

Yes, you can pack in two laptops without worrying about India’s customs duty at the entry airport. If one laptop is new, the other must be in use. The new baggage rules, 2026, allows duty-free clearance of one new laptop or notebook per adult passenger arriving in India. Precisely, you must be 18 years old or above, and the new laptop or notebook must be for your personal/family use or gifting.

If the second laptop is old and used, your baggage will go duty-free through Indian Customs. The customs officer may need you to open the laptop and show whether it is in use. Otherwise, you need to pay customs duty for bringing a second new laptop to India from USA or any other country. Well, the good news is that the customs duty will be cut to a flat 10% from the basic 20%, starting 01 April 2026.

I purchased two laptops in the US. One is boxed and the other is open. Do I have to pay India’s customs duty?

If you’re an Indian or Indian-origin foreign citizen traveling back to India from USA, you may be eligible for duty-free allowances under transfer of residence, depending on the duration of your stay abroad. Your stay in the US for 3-12 months makes you eligible for duty-free clearance of your personal belongings for up to Rs 1,50,000. If you are returning after staying abroad for one to 2 years, your personal belongings may go duty-free up to Rs 3,00,000. The duty-free allowance goes up to Rs 7,50,000 under transfer of residence, if you are traveling back to India after more than 2 years of stay abroad.

Customs rules to re-enter India with the same electronic items that you take abroad

In case of an international trip shorter than 3 months, you are not eligible for India’s duty-free allowance under transfer of residence. You should travel abroad with valid documents so that during re-entry to India, you can prove your electronic items were purchased in India. There’s another way to get duty-free clearance on arrival in India. You can declare your personal electronic items to the customs officer at the departure airport and get an export certificate before traveling to USA or any other country. The same electronic devices get customs clearance without any taxes on return to India.

How many electronic devices can I bring from USA to India?

Usually, you can pack in one laptop, one tablet, and one mobile phone as part of your bona fide baggage while flying from USA to India. If the total value of your dutiable purchases in the US exceeds India’s new duty-free limit of Rs 75,000, under the new baggage rules 2026 for resident Indians and NRIs, you must declare it to the customs officials through the red channel at the entry airport in India. You must have an import license to bring electronics in excess. Otherwise, your electronic imports in excess will be confiscated by India’s customs officials.

Can I carry two mobile phones on flights from USA to India?

In current times of social media, online shopping, OTT entertainment and multitasking, having two mobile phones is not a surprise even to Indian customs officials. Though the customs rules for inbound travelers carrying electronics to India from abroad do not allow more than one phone per person, you are safe as long as the total value of two phones is within the duty-free allowance. If you carry a new phone (in a sealed box) other than your personal mobile device in use, you have to declare it, show the purchase receipt and state the purpose, such as gifting.

If you arrive in India from USA with two new iPhones (total value exceeding Rs 75,000), it will incur customs duty.

This guide explaining India’s customs rules for electronic imports from USA and other countries is brought to you Indian Eagle, a leading US-based travel tech company facilitating affordable flights to from USA to India and beyond with best deals from major airlines. How many watches can I carry to India from USA?

Wristwatches are common electronic items in carry-on bags of Indians flying to India from USA. Undeniably, the US is home to several luxury watch brands. You can carry 2-3 watches without any issue; watches are not subject to customs duty in India if they are for personal use and if their value does not exceed the duty-free allowance. On carrying more (commercial quantity), especially luxury watches, you have to face customs officials and pay taxes.

For years, the H1B Visa has been a safe passage into the United States for Indian professionals. Since 2025, this passage to the land of American Dreams has been beset with difficulties and challenges, like the $100,000 fee for new petitions and long interview appointment wait times. Given the current scenario, the H1B Visa seems to have an uncertain future. A significant number of Indians on H1B visa are stuck in India amid uncertainties over renewal interview appointments.

Amid the current difficulties and challenges to H1B Visa, alternative options are gaining popularity. Some are temporary, while some are better. J-1 Visa is one of the other legal and practical ways to travel to America.

What is a J-1 Visa among H1B Visa alternatives?

The J-1 visa, officially known as Exchange Visitor Visa, was created by the United States in 1961 under the Fulbright-Hays Act. Its core purpose is to promote knowledge exchange, skill development, research collaboration, and cultural understanding between the United States and other countries.

J1 Visa, J-1 Visa guide, US Exchange Visitor Visa, H1B visa alternatives, J1 Visa application rules

Unlike the H-1B visa, the J-1 visa is not designed as a direct employment visa. Instead, it allows foreign nationals to come to the USA through structured exchange programs that focus on training, research, teaching, or professional development. These programs are carefully defined and monitored to ensure that the primary goal remains learning and skill exchange, not permanent employment.

The J-1 visa operates through approved organizations called sponsors. These sponsors are authorized by the US Department of State to run exchange programs and invite participants from abroad. An individual cannot apply for a J-1 visa independently. A designated sponsor must first accept the applicant and issue the required documentation.

J-1 Visa vs H-1B: Is J-1 an alternative to H1B

With H-1B interview wait times extending into 2027 in India and uncertainty growing around appointment availability, many Indians are actively searching for H-1B visa alternatives. The J-1 visa has emerged as one such alternative, especially for early-career professionals, researchers, and STEM talent. While it does not replace the H-1B visa, it offers a legal and structured way to enter the USA for work-related training and/or research without facing a lottery or annual cap. For Indians who want US exposure, skill development, and professional growth while the H-1B process remains stalled, the J-1 visa can be a practical passage.

The J-1 visa is being discussed as an alternative because:

  • There is no lottery
  • It has no annual cap
  • Applications are accepted round the year
  • Processing timelines are generally shorter

Who can apply for a J-1 Visa?

The J-1 visa is available only for specific categories. Each category has clear rules, duration limits, and eligibility norms. Common J-1 categories relevant to Indian applicants include students, recent graduates, early-career professionals, researchers, teachers, and specialists whose roles involve skill development or knowledge exchange.

J-1 Visa eligibility norms for Indian nationals

Indian nationals may be eligible for a J-1 visa if they have:

  • relevant educational qualifications
  • professional or academic background aligned with the program
  • acceptance from a designated sponsor
  • intent to participate in an exchange activity rather than permanent employment

English proficiency is required, and applicants must demonstrate they can support themselves during the program.

What is J1 Early Career STEM Research Initiative (ECSRI)?

The J-1 Early Career STEM Research Initiative, launched in July 2021, is a policy initiative under the US Department of State’s BridgeUSA program. Its goal is to attract early-career STEM talent into the USA for research and innovation.

ECSRI does not create a new visa category. It operates within the existing J-1 Research Scholar framework, making it easier for early-career STEM professionals to participate in research-based programs. This initiative has become relevant especially for Indians with backgrounds in engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and applied sciences.

How the J-1 application process works

The J-1 visa process is sponsor-driven. Applicants must first secure acceptance into a program run by an authorized sponsor. Once approved, the sponsor issues Form DS-2019, which allows the applicant to apply for a J-1 visa at a US consulate. There are around 1,500 authorized sponsors, including universities, research institutions, nonprofits, and approved private organizations.

J-1 Visa Duration, Validity, and Dependent Rules

The length of stay on a J-1 visa depends on a specific program category. Research Scholars may stay in the United States for up to five years, while interns and trainees are typically allowed shorter durations. Extensions are possible within category limits, subject to sponsor approval.

Immediate family members, including a spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21, may accompany a J-1 visa holder to the US, under the J-2 dependent visa category. J-2 dependents can live in the US for the same duration as permitted to principal J-1 visa holders. In many cases, J-2 spouses can apply for work authorization after arriving in the United States, provided the income is not used to financially support the J-1 visa holder. Children on J-2 status may attend school but are not allowed to work.

What is the home country physical presence rule for J1 Visa holders?

One of the biggest concerns for J1 Visa holders is the two-year home country physical presence requirement under the Immigration and Nationality Act, Section 212(e). This rule requires J1 visa holders to return to their home country for two years before switching to another US visa (employment or non-employment) or applying for lawful permanent residency.

Can you switch from J-1 to H-1B or Green Card?

In many cases, Indian J-1 holders can transition to other visa categories if they are not subject to the two-year rule. Some move to H-1B, others to O-1 (Einstein Visa), and some pursue employment-based Green Cards. The J-1 Visa should be seen as a stepping stone, not a permanent solution.

Uncertainties either call for or call off travel. However, medical emergencies, urgent business travel, death-like exigency in the family, and other unprecedented crises cannot wait for long visa appointment queues. Some Indians may be eligible for an emergency US visa, when an unprecedented demands immediate travel to the United States.

The term “emergency US visa” is often misunderstood. The United States does not issue a separate emergency visa for Indians or any other nationals. Rather, it offers an option to request an expedited visa interview appointment for emergency travel to USA, in an existing visa category. Here’s a guide to applying for a US emergency visa from India. Know who can qualify, what documents are required, approval timeline, etc.

What is an Emergency US Visa Appointment?

An emergency US visa appointment allows applicants to request an earlier interview date due to a genuine and unforeseen emergency. The visa category remains unchanged, whether it is B1/B2, F1, H1B, or any other US visa type. Approval of an expedited appointment does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants must still qualify under standard visa rules during the interview.

Who qualify for an Emergency US Visa Appointment

The US Embassy in India considers emergency requests only in limited and compelling circumstances. Common qualifying situations include:

  • Serious medical emergencies requiring urgent treatment in the United States
  • Death or life-threatening illness of an immediate family member
  • Students with imminent academic start dates or reporting deadlines
  • Rare business emergencies where delay would cause significant and irreversible loss

Events such as tourism, weddings, planned travel, conferences, routine business visits, and likes generally do not qualify for emergency US visa interview appointments.

How to Apply for an Emergency US Visa Appointment from India

Applicants must follow the standard US visa process before requesting an expedited appointment.

  • Complete the DS-160 visa application form
  • Pay the applicable US visa application fee
  • Schedule a regular visa interview appointment through the official US visa scheduling portal
  • After booking the regular appointment, submit an emergency or expedited appointment request from your visa profile
  • Clearly explain the emergency and upload supporting documents

Applicants should not cancel their original appointment unless the emergency request is approved.

Important Note on Interview Waiver Applicants

If you are eligible for an interview waiver or dropbox appointment, you must cancel the waiver appointment and book a regular interview before requesting an emergency slot. Emergency requests are only reviewed for in-person interviews.

Documents for emergency US Visa appointment

Strong documentation significantly improves the chances of approval. Depending on the reason, documents may include:

  • Medical letters explaining diagnosis and urgency
  • Hospital records or treatment schedules
  • Death certificates or proof of critical illness
  • Proof of relationship to the affected family member
  • University admission letters with program start dates
  • Employer letters explaining urgent business requirements

How early you can get an emergency US Visa appointment in India

There is no guaranteed timeline. Based on real-world experience:

  • Emergency request decisions usually arrive within 24 hours to one week
  • If approved, appointments may become available within 2 to 7 days
  • In extreme medical or humanitarian cases, interviews may be scheduled within 24 to 48 hours

Kindly note emergency interview appointments are limited. Even after approval, applicants may need to frequently check the scheduling portal to find available dates.

You can call +1-800-615-3969 to get unbeatable phone-only flight deals from our airline partners.

What if the emergency request is denied

If the request is denied, the original visa appointment remains unchanged. There is no penalty, but submitting false or exaggerated claims can negatively affect future visa applications.

Current US Visa appointment wait times in India

According to recent updates from the U.S. Department of State and global visa wait time trackers, US Embassy and Consulate wait times in major Indian cities continue to show significant delays for regular US visa interview appointments:

  • Chennai: ~7 months
  • Mumbai: ~7 months
  • Hyderabad: ~3.5 months
  • New Delhi: ~2.5 months
  • Kolkata: ~2 months

Great news for Indian Passport holders! In a landmark decision, Germany announced visa-free airport transit for Indians, thereby making Frankfurt and Munich airports hassle-free international layovers for Indians. Till date, Indian nationals have required an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) even for airside layovers within the international transit area at German airports. Only Indians holding a valid US Visa or Green Card have been exempted from Germany’s transit visa rules.

Germany scraps transit visa for Indians. What does it mean?

Once Germany’s new visa-free transit rule for Indians takes effect, you can easily transit through Frankfurt or Munich without an airport transit visa (means less paperwork). The lesser the paperwork, the lesser the hassle. Precisely, no transit visa will be required for the Frankfurt or Munich airport layover in your itinerary while traveling between USA and India via Germany.

Indians from the US and Canada will mostly benefit from Germany’s visa-free transit facility. Despite having an expired Canadian or US visa, Indians will be able to travel to India via Frankfurt or Munich without needing a German airport transit visa. Inarguably, many Indians from North America visit the home country for visa renewals. Demand for Lufthansa flights to India, which was declining among Indian expats due to the strict airport transit visa requirement, will again peak up.

When will visa-free transit in Germany be effective for Indians?

On his first visit to India, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the decision to make transit in Germany visa-free for Indians. It is currently in progress. Once a legal framework is in place for the implementation, a tentative date will be announced for Indian Passport holders to transit visa-free in Germany while flying to USA, Canada, or any other non-Schengen country.

Does Germany’s new visa-free transit rule allow Indians to enter the Schengen area?

A big ‘No’. The visa-free airport transit facility will continue to have certain restrictions for Indian passport holders, regardless of their US/Canadian visa or PR. Visa-free transit at German airports does not mean entry to the Schengen area. You may require a German airport transit visa even for landside access, if you need to change terminals at Frankfurt or Munich airport for landside transit or connection.

“We will continue to advice our customers booking Indian Eagle deals for Lufthansa flights, to check with the airline whether their itineraries require a German airport transit visa,” said Dheeraj Duvvuru, CEO of IndianEagle.com.

German visa rules for itineraries with two Schengen layovers

If your US-India itinerary has a layover at both Munich and Frankfurt Airport, you must need a regular Schengen visa (not a transit visa). A transit visa only permits you to catch a connecting flight to a non-Schengen country, whereas you must have a Schengen visa for connecting from a Schengen airport to another Schengen airport in the same country or in a different country.

Do Indians with a Green Card need a Schengen visa for Lufthansa flights via two Schengen airports?

Yes. Neither a valid US visa nor permanent residency status exempts you from the Schengen Visa rules. A Schengen visa is one of the most important travel documents required for hassle-free travel on Lufthansa flights via two Schengen airports in Germany.

A missed flight connection has challenges for both the airline and passengers. At busy US airports, it means a long wait for the next flight, rebooking, unplanned overnight stay, and frustration. To address this pain point, American Airlines introduced a unique short-hold technology that fired the imagination of aviation behemoths in early 2025. It allows select connecting flights to wait a few extra minutes for late-arriving passengers, whenever and wherever possible.

What is American Airlines’ Short Hold system?

A few minutes of delay for connecting flights can ensure passengers’ seamless travel to the final destination – is the premise of American Airlines’ short hold system. It is an AI-powered operational mechanism that helps the airline decide when it can briefly delay a departure. Using real-time flight data, passenger connection times, aircraft schedules, and crew availability, the system flags connections that are at risk. If holding a flight for a few minutes will not cause knock-on delays, the system recommends a short wait.

American Airlines news, American Airlines short hold, missed connection flights in USA, why to fly with American Airlines
This AI-generated image is for illustration purpose only

Airports where American Airlines’ short hold service is available

American Airlines first tested the Short Hold technology at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in May 2025. Following positive results, the airline expanded it to the following US airports, as of December 2025.

  • Dallas Fort Worth (DFW)
  • Charlotte Douglas (CLT)
  • Chicago O’Hare (ORD)
  • Miami International (MIA)
  • Philadelphia International (PHL)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)

Why New York JFK is not yet part of American’s Short Hold program

American Airlines has not yet rolled out the short hold program at New York JFK Airport, a major international gateway in the east coast. AA operations from John F. Kennedy Airport include seven weekly flights to New Delhi, India – a key revenue-generating route for the airline.  Industry experts think that travelers to New York may get to experience this facility later in 2026.

Apart from the JFK-DEL nonstop service, most American Airlines flights between USA and India carry passengers from small US cities via its hubs: Dallas DFW, Chicago ORD, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. The short hold program works for both domestic to international, and international to domestic connections. Either way, a missed connection is costly for the airline and passengers.

By deploying Short Hold technology, American Airlines eases the stress of tight connections and reduces the likelihood of missed connections at high-traffic hub airports. This is crucial especially during peak travel periods and major global events, like the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. Passengers whose connecting flights are likely to be held for a few extra minutes would receive automated notifications, so they do not miss a heartbeat over potential missed connections.

Does American Airlines always hold flights for late passengers?

American Airlines’ short hold program is not a guaranteed service. The airline does not automatically hold connecting flights for passengers of flights arriving late. The innovative technology detects and recommends if a departing flight can wait a few extra moments to board connecting travelers, without disrupting the schedule, stretching crew duty hours, and straining airport operations. However, the short hold program may seem like a small operational change, but it makes a meaningful difference to passengers flying long haul.
