History of the Philadelphia International Airport PHL
The Philadelphia International Airport was established in the year 1925. The site was its establishment was called Hog Island. At the time, it was used by the Pennsylvania National Guard as a training field.
Two years later, in 1927, it became a dedicated area known as the Philadelphia Municipal Airport, though the building we can see today began around 1940. The Camden Central Airport in nearby Pennsauken Township, New Jersey, was used by the airlines until then. By the early 1970s, runway 9R was opened; it covered a distance of 10,500 feet!
On the 20th of June 1940, the Philadelphia International Airport weather station became the official point for the National Weather Service in that city.
In the Second World War, the site of the Philadelphia International Airport was used as a First Air Force training by the United States Army Air Forces.
In early 1940, the Rising Sun School of Aeronautics of Coatesville executed primary flight training at the Philadelphia International Airport. After the December 1940 Pearl Harbor Attack, the PHL provided for the defense of the nation. It played important roles in other such events, too.
By 1945, the use of this airport was reduced and gradually returned to control by the civil population.
