Etihad Airways has made a significant move towards its carbon-neutral commitment. As per a recent update by the airline, the company will now plant a mangrove tree for every Economy Space ticket sold.

Mangrove plants have the capacity to absorb around 250 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) in their entire lifetime. This equals to the same amount of CO2 emitted by an 8-hour flight. So, eventually every Etihad Economy Space seat will become carbon neutral. Those taking Etihad carbon neutral flights will have the option to keep a track of their mangrove plants. The airline’s goal is to plant at least 182,000 mangroves in the Etihad’s mangrove forest by March 2023.

The Etihad Mangrove Forest

Etihad’s mangrove forest is an initiative under the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Forest Program launched in February 2022. The development of the forest is in line with the airline’s commitment towards aviation decarbonization. The entire program is a greater initiative by Environment Agency Dubai along with other stakeholders. The plan is to create mangrove forests for Etihad carbon neutral flights in every continent and major destinations.

Etihad’s Other Green Initiatives

Etihad has always been at the forefront of sustainability. The airline claims to have retire its less-efficient aircraft and only use the ones that are more fuel-efficient. Electric vehicles serve almost 37% Etihad flights. Etihad also uses less paper as its fleet utilizes E-Tech logs for operational processes. The airline has also replaced in-flight paper magazines with their digital editions.

The airline continues to modify flight routes as per efficiency requirements. Around 38% of its sustainable flights use greener fuels. Almost 80% Etihad flights use fewer single-use plastic products. By the year 2020, it had removed some 41 such items from its business. By the end of 2022, Etihad aims to remove a total of 100 items. The airline also uses data to control water wastage on its flights. It also plans to reduce noise emitted from its flights and invest in research with reliable partners for the same. It is also investing in developing sustainable fuels for airlines.

A big sustainable move by Etihad was in 2019 when it launched the Greenliner Program. Under this flagship initiative, it introduced in its fleet the tailormade Boeing 787-10 known as the Greenliner. It has the distinction of being the first aircraft in the world built for sustainability. It also uses Airbus A350, which is known for its enhanced capabilities for less sound emissions and for being greener than most existing aircraft.

Now, it is aiming for 100% carbon neutrality via mangrove forests and other means. The airline has made a commitment for zero emissions by the momentous year 2050.
