The Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat brings to mind women weaving designs with mirror work and colorful threads. The Kutch district has a unique distinction as the largest breeding ground of flamingos in the entire Indian subcontinent.kutch-flamingos

The Kutch desert sanctuary becomes home to the Flamingo pair as they bond to establish and defend nesting territories. The mudflats suitable spots for breeding are chosen by the female.

The Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary is created to encourage the only breeding ground of lesser and Greater flamingos in the Indian subcontinent.

The Bombay Natural History Society and Birdlife International has identified the 7505.22 square kilometers natural habitat as the largest Bird sanctuary in Gujarat.

Four kind of spices of flamingo exist in the world today. The greater and the lesser flamingos are found in India. The difference is the lesser flamingo has darker pink colored wings then the greater flamingos. The plumage of the greater Flamingo is pinkish-white, wing coverts red and the primary and secondary flight feathers are black.

Rann is rich with deposits of salt crystals spread like a blanket of snow. In sharp contrast the peculiar conditions of a saline desert inundated by rains form a shallow, salty lagoon, making breeding conditions suitable for the Flamingo.

Lakhs of flamingos flock to the region for breeding every year. 60 per cent of the visitors at the Kutch Rann Utsav head towards Flamingo city. A good food chain will mean an extended stay until April.

The Kutch or Rann Mahotsav will wrap up by 31 Jan, 2013. Indian Eagle offers cheap airfare to Gujarat. The city has a lot to offer.Take a tour to the kutch village or the Wildlife Sanctuary, the culinary is something to look forward to.
