As major airlines around the world have been accelerating the use of sustainable aviation fuel to reduce carbon emissions, the aviation industry is optimistic about reaching its goal of net zero emissions. Cathay Pacific airline has now unveiled a new interim carbon emission reduction target for 2030.

Cathay Pacific has reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonizing the aviation industry by setting a new target to improve its carbon intensity by 12% from the 2019 level by 2030. This move underscores the airline’s ambition to lead the way in sustainability. It also supports its overarching goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Increasing the Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

In order to increase the implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Cathay will utilize SAF to offset the carbon emissions of 10% of employee duty travel from Cathay Pacific flights beginning in 2024. This initiative builds on Cathay’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, which includes its own voluntary carbon offset program, Fly Greener, which was launched in 2007. It also includes the introduction of new fuel-efficient aircraft in the Cathay Pacific fleet. With this, around 70 passenger and freighter planes will join the existing fleet.

Cathay Pacific Enhances its Premium Class Menu on Select Flights

Cathay Pacific has announced an exciting new collaboration with JIA Group’s world-renowned Michelin-star French restaurant, Louise. This new partnership brings a modern take on classic French cuisine to Cathay Pacific’s flights, enriching the inflight dining experience. Passengers flying First and Business class on selected long-haul flights departing from Hong Kong can indulge in 16 recreated French classics.

Cathay Pacific also resumed its service to Chennai on February 2nd. The airline will now operate three weekly flights to Chennai. This will provide a convenient one-stop connection for passengers from New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

As top airlines around the world embrace sustainable aviation fuel, the Indian aviation industry is also working towards utilizing Made in India SAF. Various biotech companies along with airlines and policymakers have been working to make India’s aviation sector greener. In line with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, AirAsia India operated a flight using a blend of indigenous Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Recently, IndiGo and SpiceJet also flew special demonstration flights using Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Vistara took one step ahead as it used a blend of SAF in a long-haul US to India international flight and a Delhi-to-Mumbai domestic flight. Vistara received a lot of praise for these two successful Dreamliner flights.

AirAsia India’s Special Flight

Friday, 19th May became a day of celebration as flight i5-767 flew from Pune Airport and landed at Delhi Airport after a successful journey. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and Praj Industries Ltd. partnered to supply a blend of indigenous SAF for this special AirAsia flight.

Although Sustainable Aviation Fuel is still not widely used in regular flight operations by Indian airlines, the government will likely soon mandate using a blend of SAF up to a certain percentage along with the regular fuel. Despite the country still catching up when compared to the usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel worldwide, flight i5-767 by AirAsia India is certainly a major milestone in India’s efforts toward a sustainable future.

The SAF used in AirAsia India’s special flight was sourced by Praj in partnership with Gevo Inc. The latter is also credited with developing a revolutionizing Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology.
