As top airlines around the world embrace sustainable aviation fuel, the Indian aviation industry is also working towards utilizing Made in India SAF. Various biotech companies along with airlines and policymakers have been working to make India’s aviation sector greener. In line with the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, AirAsia India operated a flight using a blend of indigenous Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Recently, IndiGo and SpiceJet also flew special demonstration flights using Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Vistara took one step ahead as it used a blend of SAF in a long-haul US to India international flight and a Delhi-to-Mumbai domestic flight. Vistara received a lot of praise for these two successful Dreamliner flights.

AirAsia India’s Special Flight

Friday, 19th May became a day of celebration as flight i5-767 flew from Pune Airport and landed at Delhi Airport after a successful journey. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and Praj Industries Ltd. partnered to supply a blend of indigenous SAF for this special AirAsia flight.

Although Sustainable Aviation Fuel is still not widely used in regular flight operations by Indian airlines, the government will likely soon mandate using a blend of SAF up to a certain percentage along with the regular fuel. Despite the country still catching up when compared to the usage of Sustainable Aviation Fuel worldwide, flight i5-767 by AirAsia India is certainly a major milestone in India’s efforts toward a sustainable future.

Another achievement for the country is that the Sustainable Aviation Fuel used in AirAsia India’s flight i5-767 was manufactured by Praj Industries. This is an Indian industrial biotech company that focuses on business in energy, environment, and agri-process. The SAF used in AirAsia India’s special flight was sourced by Praj in partnership with Gevo Inc. The latter is also credited with developing a revolutionizing Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology. This can be used to produce SAF utilizing bio-based feedstock.
