Air travelers flying with Alaska Airlines will soon be able to use the electronic bag tag technology, which allows passengers to tag their own luggage and thus avoid waiting in a queue for luggage tagging at the airport. Travelers can access the airline’s mobile app to tag their bags from anywhere, and those who have tagged their bags electronically can walk straight to the bag drop area after check-in at the airport. 

“With the addition of the Alaska Airlines electronic bag tag, our guests can complete almost all of their check-in tasks – from the comfort of their home, at work or on the way to catching their flight,” noted Charu Jain, senior vice-president of merchandising and innovation for Alaska, in the official press release. Further, this electronic bag tag system is expected to bring down the time passengers spend waiting at the airport lobbies by nearly 40 percent besides contributing to a smooth passenger flow at the airport. 

Airlines such as Lufthansa and KLM among others have already embraced BAGTAG’s electronic bag tag technology, but Alaska Airlines is the first US airline to bring this service to its passengers. 

The airline launched its electronic bag tag program on a pilot basis and in the trial phase, it would send 2,500 BAGTAG devices to its select Mileage Plan members this week. Passengers’ flight information will be updated on these devices through the airline mobile app during check-in. Alaska Airlines plans to make these electronic bag tags available to all its passengers in 2023.
