Air India is on the road to become the leading airline across the world. The airline has been taking initiatives to not only improve its services but also enhance its fleet. Be it the introduction of AI chatbot for customer support, addition of new destinations or inclusion of advanced Airbus A350 aircraft, the airline has been constantly working on improving passenger experience. Now a whopping $400 million would be spent on Air India cabin upgrade in an attempt to modernize its fleet.

With the Air India cabin refit program, the airline will start a massive transformation. This is likely a significant step to further enhance the inflight experience for Air India passengers.

What will the $400 million Air India cabin upgrade include?

The Air India cabin refit program will revitalize its fleet. It will see the upgrade of 43 widebody aircraft in the Air India fleet. This includes refitting cabins of Air India Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner jets. Once refitted, these Air India aircraft are expected to offer passengers a more comfortable and premium flying experience.

The Air India $400 million upgrade may include better in-flight entertainment systems, new and comfortable seats, and enhanced interior design. Larger screens, more content options, and an enhanced user interface will all be available. Enhancing the in-flight experience is a primary goal of the Air India refit program. All passenger classes—business, first class, premium economy, and economy—will have improved seating. More legroom, improved reclining features, and improved overall comfort are all elements of the new designs. These upgrades will offer more space and luxury, especially to Air India passengers traveling on long-haul routes such as the USA to India

Air India’s Commitment to Sustainability

As part of this program, sustainability is something that Air India is also considering. The airline intends to use light-weight materials in the updated cabin layouts, which will contribute to a decrease in fuel usage and the carbon footprint of each Air India flight. This is consistent with the aviation sector’s increasing dedication to reducing environmental impact.

The airline is enhancing operational effectiveness and supporting international efforts to combat climate change by increasing the fuel efficiency of the Air India fleet. It is anticipated that the retrofit effort will have a major long-term positive impact on the environment and operational costs.

It’s Home! No, we are not talking about the ICC T20 World Cup trophy but Air India’s brand new narrow body aircraft. Although we have to agree, this new Airbus A320neo aircraft is not less than a trophy for Air India. The airline welcomed its first A320 narrow body with swanky new livery at the Delhi Airport on 7th July.

The new Air India A320neo aircraft bears a registration of VT-RTN. This is a tribute to Ratan Tata, the former Chairman of Tata Group. The brand new jet flew from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport to Delhi, covering a distance of 6,784 kilometers in around eight hours and 17 minutes.

About Air India’s A320 Narrow Body Aircraft

The new Airbus A320neo aircraft is powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines. This ensures efficient and environmentally friendly operations. Air India passengers will have a seamless flight as this narrowbody aircraft is currently configured with 186 economy seats. According to sources, it will be retrofitted to include 132 Economy seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 8 Business Class seats

The A320neo in Air India fleet stands out for its environmental performance. It boasts at least 20% lesser fuel burn and CO2 emissions when compared to older A320 narrow body models. Additionally, it has a 50% reduction in noise footprint. This will make Air India flights on this jet quieter and more eco-friendly.

The Expanding Air India Fleet

Currently, Air India operates a diverse fleet of 143 aircraft. This includes 56 A320 family jets, 17 A321s, 6 Airbus A350 aircraft, 27 Boeing 777 and 787-8 Dreamliners along with 10 A319 jets. Additionally, Vistara, a part of the Air India Group, operates 70 jets, including A320neos, A321neos, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Air India Express and AIX Connect collectively add another 80 jets to the group’s fleet.

The arrival of the first A320neo aircraft with the new livery marks a significant milestone for Air India. This modern, efficient jet will further enhance the operational capabilities of the Air India fleet. With the addition of this A320 narrow body aircraft, Air India is on its way to not only become a leading global airline but reduce carbon emissions as well.

Loyalty reimagined by Air India. After hinting at a possible change to its frequent flyer program via social media on 31st March, Air India has revamped its Flying Returns loyalty program. Effective immediately, the program now adopts a spend-based earning system. This allows Air India passengers to earn points based on the amount spent on tickets rather than the distance flown. The initiative aims to offer greater value for money and reward those who choose premium cabins or longer layovers.

Air India has made changes to its Flying Returns program after more than a decade. Under the new earning system, members get 6 tier points and between 6 and 10 reward points for every $1.2 they spend, depending on the membership tier. Additionally, Flying Returns members get a 2 award point bonus for each $1.2 that they spend when they book directly through Air India’s website or app across all tiers.

Air India Simplifies Tier Benefits

Air India’s reimagined loyalty program introduces simplified tier levels. These are renamed as Red, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, aligning with global industry standards. In order to qualify for each tier, Flying Return members need to meet specific points and flight count requirements.

To qualify for the Red tier, Air India Flying Returns members should accumulate at least 15,000 points or complete 30 flights. Members can move up to the Silver tier by collecting 30,000 points or taking at least 60 flights within a specified period. By collecting 45,000 points or completing 90 flights, members can move up to Gold tier status. In order to move to the Platinum tier, members also need 45,000 points or take 90 flights. These tier requirements offer Air India’s frequent flyer program members with clear milestones. It will help them to acquire additional benefits and privileges.

Enhanced Benefits for Air India’s Reimagined Flying Returns Members

Air India’s Flying Returns program now offers numerous enhanced benefits to its members. One of the top benefits is the inclusion of Evergreen Points, where Flying Returns Points will not expire as long as members take at least one Air India flight every 24 months. There are no blackout dates for redemption. This will allow members to use points for any available Air India seat without restrictions.

Additionally, the Air India Reimagined Flying Returns program introduces Cash+Points Redemption. This will offer flexibility to pay for award flights using a combination of points and cash. With a global reach, members can earn and redeem points across 25 Star Alliance partner airlines, gaining access to over 1000 lounges worldwide. Furthermore, Silver, Gold, and Platinum members receive priority customer service assistance and lounge access as part of the Priority Services.

Introduction of New Features to Enhance Member Experience

Days after United Airlines launched a similar feature allowing members to pool miles with friends and family, Air India introduced family pooling as well. This allows members to combine points with family members for quicker redemption.

Direct Booking Bonus has also been introduced that will let members earn additional bonus points for booking flights directly through Air India’s website or app. Moreover, the program also offers Expanded Point Collection. This enables members to earn points through various non-airline partners, including hotels, car rentals, and lifestyle experiences. These new features aim to offer members with more flexibility and opportunities to maximize their rewards.

Introduction of Business Class in Air India’s A350-900

Air India also offered glimpses of its business class cabin onboard Airbus A350-900 through a social media post on April 2. Hinting that it will be introduced soon, the airline mentioned it will include spacious flatbed seats and non-stop inflight entertainment. Air India business class on A350 will definitely redefine travel through this iconic aircraft.
