For all motorbiking enthusiasts who love the challenging ride to Leh, Ladakh, Spiti, and other high-altitude places in the Trans-Himalayan Region, here’s a piece of good news! Manali-Leh, Srinagar-Leh, Shimla-Spiti, and other routes in Ladakh, Spiti, and Zanskar Circuits are now open for travelers.

Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) are now allowed on the Srinagar-Leh route between Sonamarg and Kargil, from 5 am to 5 pm on all days of the week except Friday. If you are planning a road trip through the Manali-Leh highway, it is advised that you be a little more cautious while crossing the high mountain passes like Baralacha La, Lachung La, and Taglang La.

Motorbikes and other vehicles are also allowed on the road that leads to Kaza from Shimla on the Shimla-Manali-Spiti Circuit, the Manali-Shinku La-Padum route on Zanskar Circuit as well as the Chamba-Sach Pass-Killar route. Travelers willing to extend their Shimla-Kaza road trip further to Chandra Taal (in Lahaul) must be prepared for a drive through dirt roads.

As some of the most popular road trips in India; the Manali-Leh, Srinagar-Leh, and Shimla-Spiti roads are traversed by thousands of adventurous motorbike riders every year. These tough roads pass through some of the most gorgeous landscapes in India. They remain closed for vehicular movement during the winter season and will reopen for travelers after the snow clearance post-winter.

Although these high-altitude routes are now accessible to travelers, nothing can be assured as to how long they will remain available since it is dependent on the weather conditions in these areas. So, get started on your Trans-Himalayan driving expedition as soon as possible!
