If a state needed a new airport urgently, it was Goa. And now with the Mopa Airport about to become operational, Goa will have its second international airport all set for flights before this year ends.
Mopa Airport in South Goa completed its first flight test on 5th September, 2022. This new airport in Goa will be the first fully-commercial airport in the state. The existing Dabolim International Airport in North Goa cannot handle more than 70 flights daily as it also serves the Navy. The new airport is likely to increase the number of daily flights to Goa.
Built under government’s Greenfield Project, Goa’s Mopa Airport will bolster flight connectivity to the state. Dabolim Airport’s area is quite small and it can be very congested in the afternoons and onward when commercial operations begin. As of now, flight landings are not allowed at Dabolim Airport from morning nine to afternoon two. The new airport will enable tourists to reach Goa more easily. It will also be a boon for residents of course.
The Successful Flight Test Run at Mopa
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducted the trial run at Mopa with an IndiGo aircraft (Airbus A320). It has cleared the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedure and the trial landing. RNP test validates for flyability and accuracy. The news was released via a statement from GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL), which is Mopa’s operator.
The new airport in Goa is likely to be inaugurated in October this year – right before the peak tourist season in Goa starts. It is expected that all the work at the airport will be complete by 23rd October.
