Waiting for your luggage at the airport is one of the most overwhelming parts of a journey. Isn’t it? The situation at Indian Airports got so worse that the government had to intervene. Only 62.2% of passengers were receiving their baggage within 30 minutes of arrival. This led the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and domestic airlines to work on a mission to solve the problem.

This improvement follows an initiative launched by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in January. The exercise aimed to enhance the baggage handling systems of domestic airlines at six major airports in India. Due to this passenger-focused initiative, the baggage delivery systems at Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have significantly improved. Over 90% of passengers now receive their luggage within 30 minutes of their flight’s arrival. This dramatic improvement still continues, reaching an impressive 92.5% by May 2024.

How were the problems delaying the baggage delivery times identified?

The BCAS, working closely with airlines, began identifying the root causes of the baggage delivery delays. Outdated equipment, inefficient services, and inadequate monitoring were considered as major issues. A comprehensive plan was also put in place to address these challenges. This focused on overhauling and upgrading baggage handling systems.

What were the improvements implemented at the Indian Airports?

The improvements were implemented at six major Indian Airports: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. New, state-of-the-art equipment was installed to streamline the baggage handling process. Services were also revamped and strict monitoring protocols were established to ensure efficiency. The goal was clear: baggage must be delivered to passengers within 30 minutes of the aircraft’s arrival. People traveling through Indian Eagle cheap flights also expressed their satisfaction with the improvement in baggage delivery times.

Expanding the Efforts with Phase 2

Encouraged by the improvement in baggage delivery times, the government is now focusing on phase 2 of the plan. This involves advising all domestic and international airlines operating at other airports to follow the same stringent measures. The aim is to replicate the success seen at the six major Indian airports.

From just 62.2% in January to a whopping 92.5% in May 2024, the progress has been swift and significant. With ongoing efforts and a focus on expanding these improvements to other airports, the future of baggage handling in India looks promising. You can search flights to India and visit the country to see the improvement in baggage arrival times yourself.
