In 2027, the US capital will be home to an Indian heritage museum and a cricket stadium. A group of Indian Americans is working on the plans to build the first museum where Americans can walk through India’s history and heritage. It is also an Indian American named Sanjay Govil, who came forward to build a cricket stadium in the DMV area. Last year, he was among the businessmen who had shown interest in buying Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), one of the most valuable franchises in Indian Premier League. Now in 2026, he is back in the headlines on receiving approval to build a permanent cricket stadium.

Billionaire Sanjay Govil’s Cricket Stadium: Location and Capacity

The cricket stadium for Sanjay Govil’s Washington Freedom Major League Cricket team is coming up in Frederick, Maryland. The Frederick City Council approved the rezoning of 24 acres at the Gateway Property, a 30-mile drive northwest of Washington D.C. The Maryland cricket stadium will have 10,000-seating capacity, a five-pitch cricket square, and a multi-purpose community space. It is not just a milestone for him. Rather, a new home for the DMV area’s growing cricket community.

Who is Indian American Sanjay Govil?

Sanjay Govil is a tech entrepreneur, cricket investor, and billionaire with a net worth of around $2 billion. He is the founder, CEO, and chairman of Infinite Computer Solutions and the owner of MLC franchise Washington Freedom. In 2025, Sanjay Govil’s net worth was reported at more than $1.91 billion (₹16,200 crore), according to media reports. Though he was born in Montreal, Canada, he spent his childhood in India before moving to the United States.

Sanjay grew up on the IIT Delhi campus, where his father, Dr. Narendra Kumar Govil, was a mathematics professor. He studied at the renowned Mount St. Mary’s School in Delhi. His father also has an impressive academic legacy. Dr. Narendra Govil earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Montreal, where Sanjay was born, before returning to India and becoming a professor at IIT Delhi. In 1983, he joined Auburn University in Alabama and eventually became Professor Emeritus in its Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Sanjay Govil’s education and career in USA

After moving to Alabama, Sanjay completed high school at Auburn High School and enrolled at Auburn University. He studied electrical engineering and completed his undergraduate degree in three years. He later earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University and pursued graduate studies at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

His American career began in the technology industry. He worked at IBM and Verizon before taking the biggest risk of his career. In 2001, after moving to the Washington, D.C., area with his wife, Vidya Govil, he founded Infinite Computer Solutions with about $1,000 in savings. The company grew into a global technology business serving healthcare, telecommunications and financial services.

Sanjay later expanded into healthcare technology by founding Zyter, a digital health company that provides technology solutions to healthcare organizations. His business interests also include investments across technology and healthcare, adding to a career that extends well beyond Infinite Computer Solutions. Forbes reported in 2019 that Infinite was valued at about $1.8 billion and employed thousands of people. Sanjay remains its founder, CEO, and chairman.

His next big investment came in professional cricket. Sanjay became a founding investor in USA’ Major League Cricket and the owner of Washington Freedom. The team won its first MLC championship in 2024. His son, Avikar Govil, has also been involved with the franchise. In 2025, Sanjay expanded his cricket portfolio to England by acquiring a 50% stake in Welsh Fire, the England and Wales franchise in The Hundred.

For Sanjay Govil, the Maryland stadium is more than another sports investment. He knows what it is like to grow up with cricket and then move to a country where the game has limited visibility. His goal now is to help create a stronger cricket ecosystem in America, with a permanent venue that can host professional matches, youth sports, and community events.
