You now need to think twice before booking American Airlines tickets for travel on a short notice if you have uncertain plans, as the airline tightened its 24-hour free refund policy. Effective 29 July 2026, American Airlines limits its 24-hour free cancellation window to travelers who book flight tickets for trips scheduled at least one week later. Precisely, the policy which was passenger-friendly all these years, is quite restrictive now.
American Airlines’ new 24-hour refund policy
Applicable to tickets purchased on or after 29 July 2026, the revised 24-hour free cancellation and refund policy is not suitable for last-minute travel booking. Until this revision, you could cancel your AA booking within 24 hours of the ticket issuance and receive a full refund, even though your flight was booked just 48 hours before departure. The rule has now changed.
Your booking with American Airlines is eligible for a full refund against cancellation within 24 hours of purchase only if you are scheduled to travel at least seven days later. Without an official announcement, AA has updated the policy revision in its Customer Service FAQs, along with some terms as follows:
- Get a refund to the original mode of payment within 24 hours of booking, provided the booking is made at least 7 days before your planned departure.
- The new 24-hour cancellation and refund policy applies to all fare and ticket types.
- Passengers must actively cancel the booking to get full refunds.
- The booking for a group of travelers does not qualify for the free 24-hour refund window.
- AA flight tickets purchased from a travel agency must be cancelled and refunded by the agency if the tickets are eligible for the revised 24-hour refund policy.
Go for 24-hour fare hold if you are unsure about a trip
You may need to travel within a week, but you are uncertain about it. In this situation, you can reserve a flight ticket at the quoted fare for 24 hours instead of purchasing the ticket. This is called 24-hour fare hold that US airlines offer in compliance with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) regulations. In case you drop the travel plan, just cancel the ticket for free that you place on hold. No actual payment. No refund. Some airlines let you reserve a ticket for a small service fee (non-refundable in some cases).
Practically, American Airlines’ 24-hour fare hold policy gives you a 24-hour window to make a travel decision.
