As global travel demand keeps on increasing, so does the growth of major airports. As a popular destination, the US has attracted millions of passengers over the past decade. This has resulted in increased passenger footfall in both domestic and international airports in USA. Here are the key US airports that are leading the charge.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

In 2025, Phoenix Sky Harbor emerged as the fastest-growing major airport in North America. PHX added over 326,000 seats, marking a 13.2 % surge from the previous year. Surprisingly, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport saw no passenger growth between 2016 and 2018.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport recorded 26,276,031 seats in 2016-2017 and slightly fewer; i.e., 26,211,902, in 2017-2018. But thereafter, the traffic has steadily increased. This growth has been fueled by stronger domestic connections and the addition of new international routes. Airlines like Southwest and Frontier have also expanded their services on high-demand tourist destinations, contributing to the rise in traffic.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Francisco International Airport ranks among the busiest in the United States. Despite recent global disruptions, SFO has been steadily recovering its passenger volume. In 2025, San Francisco Airport added 318,906 seats, reflecting a 12.4% growth from the previous year. It is now among the fastest growing international airports in USA, especially for passengers from India.

Passenger traffic from India to SFO surged by 186% in 2023 compared to the same period in 2019. Increased frequency by major airlines such as United, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific may have contributed to this growth. Air India nonstop flights from San Francisco to India and vice versa have also played a significant role in SFO’s international expansion.

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Orlando International Airport (MCO) recorded a 7% year-over-year jump in seat capacity in March 2025, reaching a total of 3,261,996 seats. As a major vacation hub, MCO attracts families visiting theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios. In 2024, Orlando International Airport handled 57,211,628 passengers, making it the busiest hub in Florida.

international carriers such as United, Delta, British Airways and Emirates are key contributors to Orlando Airport’s global expansion. Presence of trusted travel programs such as Global Entry and TSA PreCheck further make travel for international passengers hassle-free. Furthermore, the airport’s expanding global route map is helping it grow steadily.

Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)

Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas handled over 4,845,763 passengers in March 2025. Experts had earlier predicted a daily increase of nearly 100,000 seats in the first quarter, reflecting a 1.9% rise over the previous year.

By May 2025, the airport served 4,988,872 passengers; an increase of 143,109 from March, indicating 2.95% growth. Southwest, Spirit Airlines and Delta Air Lines flights are the top three carriers contributing to its growth by increasing flight frequency and route options.

Although San Francisco and Orlando International Airports are already among the busiest airports in USA, their continued growth in passenger traffic, despite an overall dip in air travel demand to the US, is remarkable. At the same time, the emergence of Phoenix Sky Harbor and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airports as two of the fastest growing international airports in USA is another stepping stone for the American aviation industry.
