The Port Authority’s commercial airports had around 32 million passengers passing through their gates. The Newark airport in particular set a new first-quarter record with 11.1 million passengers. In fact, the Memorial Day weekend saw a surge in air traffic across all airports in the USA. Approximately 2.74 million passengers traveled during this time, which is a 6.7% increase compared to the pre-pandemic period. 

There are a number of factors contributing to the surge in air travel. One is the easing of travel restrictions, which has made it easier for people to get around.
