As air travel is increasing around the world, US airports too are seeing a record increase in passengers. And New York area airports have seen a whopping surge in air traffic in the first quarter of 2023. John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia airports saw an increase of 6.7% when compared to 2019. JFK, EWR, and LGA also had an increase of 8% in international passengers in April compared to March.

A New Record in the First Quarter

The Port Authority’s commercial airports had around 32 million passengers passing through their gates. The Newark airport in particular set a new first-quarter record with 11.1 million passengers. In fact, the Memorial Day weekend saw a surge in air traffic across all airports in the USA. Approximately 2.74 million passengers traveled during this time, which is a 6.7% increase compared to the pre-pandemic period.

There are a number of factors contributing to the surge in air travel. One is the easing of travel restrictions, which has made it easier for people to get around. Another is the strong economy, which has given people more money to spend on travel. And finally, the COVID-19 pandemic has made people more eager to travel, as they have been cooped up at home for the past two years.

New York Area Airports Are Gearing Up for a Super Summer

The three airports in the New York area are expected to see a significant increase in traffic this summer. According to data from Cirium, there could be a total of 11,825 weekly departures from JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia airports in June 2023.

John F. Kennedy International Airport will have the most departures, with 4,401 weekly flights. Newark will have 3,978 weekly flights, and LaGuardia will likely have 3,446 weekly flights. In total, there will be 757,000+ seats available on these flights.

These numbers are a sign of the strong demand for air travel in the New York area. With so many domestic and international flights available, travelers will have plenty of options to choose from when planning their summer vacations.

The strong performance of the air transport industry is a welcome sign for the economy. Air travel is a major driver of economic activity, and its recovery will help to boost other sectors of the economy, such as tourism.

It remains to be seen whether the current surge in air travel will continue in the long term. However, the early signs are positive, and it appears that the air transport industry is well on its way to recovery.
