Key Takeaways:

  • All international airports will have enough immigration counters and officials available 24×7 to reduce waiting times during the festive and peak tourist season.

  • The Trusted Traveller Programme allows pre-verified Indian nationals and OCI cardholders to complete immigration checks quickly and is currently active at 13 airports with plans to expand.

  • Airports are installing advanced biometric kiosks and improving infrastructure to streamline passenger movement and ensure smoother, faster clearance for travellers.

With the festive and peak tourist season around the corner, the Union Home Ministry has moved to ease the immigration rush at India’s international airports. Directions have been issued to the Bureau of Immigration to keep enough counters open and ensure round-the-clock staffing so that passengers do not face long queues.

The order came after a review meeting chaired last week by Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar. Officials confirmed that the ministry has asked airports to strengthen manpower and streamline processes, including the setup of new immigration counters, ahead of the expected surge in international arrivals and departures.

Fast Track Immigration Now Available at 13 Airports

The ministry is pushing the Fast Track Immigration – Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) like never before. If you’re an Indian national or OCI cardholder who’s already pre-verified, this programme lets you breeze through immigration much faster. It’s up and running at 13 big airports, from Delhi and Mumbai to Bengaluru, Chennai, and Amritsar. So far, about three lakh people have signed up, and 2.65 lakh have already enjoyed the quicker process.

In its first phase, FTI-TTP is free of cost and limited to Indian passport holders and OCI cardholders. Similar to the Global Entry Program in the United States, it is designed for trusted, low-risk travellers and promises quicker, smoother, and more secure clearance. The government has plans to expand it to 21 airports.

Passenger Growth Leads to Immigration Reforms

Statistics reveal a surge in international arrivals. In 2024, India issued more than 32 lakh e-visas to foreign nationals, a majority of whom were tourists. The government’s network of 114 check posts handled around 4.7 lakh e-FRRO services, showing the scale of international arrivals. Meanwhile, 5.45 lakh OCI cards were handed out to people of Indian origin from around the world, linking families and communities across borders.

To accommodate this growth, the Home Ministry has notified 37 airports, 34 sea and river ports, 37 international land crossings, and six railway stations as official immigration posts. Airport operators have also been asked to accelerate the installation of advanced biometric kiosks to cut down waiting times at counters.

Airports Strengthen Immigration Ahead of Festivals

Heading home for Diwali, Dussehra, or winter break? The airports have you covered! More counters, extra officials on duty all day and night, and fast-track lanes for trusted travellers mean smoother, faster immigration checks. The government’s new push is all about cutting down long waits and making your travel experience better than ever. As the festive season brings a wave of returning NRIs and tourists, these changes promise quicker, hassle-free journeys for everyone flying in and out of India.

Fast Track Immigration IndiaKey Takeaways:
  • The Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme has been expanded to five more airports, taking the total to 13.

  • Indian passport holders and OCI cardholders can enroll free of cost by applying online and completing biometric verification.

  • Registered travelers can clear immigration quickly through automated e-gates with biometric authentication.

With the launch of the Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) at five airports on Thursday, international travellers from Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Trichy, Kozhikode, and Amritsar can now move through immigration faster and smoother. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the programme via video conference, furthering its nationwide rollout and strengthening the vision of fast track immigration in India.

Launched first at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in mid-2024, this innovative programme has already spread to Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, and Ahmedabad. With today’s launch, it now operates at 13 airports and will soon be available at 21 important international gateways.

Benefits of the FTI-TTP Programme

For Indian passport holders and OCI cardholders, travel just became smoother. The programme allows registered members to skip manual counters, using automated e-gates where their identity is verified instantly through biometric authentication, cutting down long immigration lines.

The process is streamlined using advanced technology. Boarding pass and passport scans trigger fingerprint and facial recognition systems, which instantly authenticate identity. When verified, the gate opens automatically, enabling rapid clearance through immigration. Officials highlight that the system reduces immigration waiting time by roughly 60% while minimizing human contact, which is a key advantage in today’s travel environment.

How to Enroll in FTI-TTP

Participation is currently free and limited to Indian citizens and OCI cardholders, with foreign travellers to be included later. Here’s the straightforward registration process:

  • Applicants are requested to submit their application online through the official portal www.ftittp.mha.gov.in.
  • Ensure that all personal details are accurately filled in and that required documents, including passport, photograph, and OCI card (where applicable), are uploaded.
  • Ensure the passport is valid for at least six months at the time of application; membership validity matches the passport’s expiration or is capped at five years.
  • After review, applicants receive notification to schedule a biometric appointment at a chosen airport or the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
  • Biometrics, including fingerprints and facial scans, are compulsory to finalize registration.

Once onboard, travellers join a “trusted traveller” allowlist, enabling a swift, seamless immigration experience wherever the programme operates.

FTI-TTP and India’s Vision for the Future

Driven by the government’s ambitious “Viksit Bharat @2047” vision, the Fast Track Immigration initiative aims to build world-class, secure, and passenger-friendly immigration infrastructure across India’s airports. The idea is to help India take its place among the world’s best, making international travel effortless for millions. Echoing systems like the U.S. Global Entry programme, FTI-TTP places India firmly on a global map of smart, technology-enabled border management.

For travellers, this means less time in lines, more certainty, and a modern way to navigate airports, starting now at these five new airports, with more to follow.

With the Trusted Traveller Programme expanding, flights from USA to India are now paired with quicker immigration clearance. Indian Eagle deals further enhance the journey by offering affordable fares on these long-haul routes.
