Air India has started operating its newest Boeing 787-9 aircraft on the Mumbai to London Heathrow route. The new aircraft will operate flights AI131 and AI130, offering travelers a more modern and comfortable long-haul experience.

New Aircraft for a Key International Route

The Boeing 787-9 aircraft now operating between Mumbai and London Heathrow comes with new cabin interiors designed specifically for Air India. These aircraft are the first Boeing 787s built for the airline with its latest onboard product installed directly during production. This update brings Air India’s latest cabin design, technology, and comfort features to one of its major international routes.

Premium Economy on Mumbai-London Flights

One of the biggest changes for flyers is the introduction of Premium Economy on the Mumbai-London Heathrow route. Passengers can now choose from three cabin classes: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. The new Boeing 787-9 has 30 Business Class suites, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 238 Economy seats. Premium Economy offers wider seats in a 2-3-2 layout. Passengers get 38 inches of seat pitch, better recline, adjustable headrests, leg rests, calf rests, and a 13.3-inch 4K entertainment screen. This cabin is useful for passengers who want more comfort than Economy without choosing Business Class.

Business Class Experience with More Comfort

Business Class passengers will get private suites with direct aisle access and fully flat beds. The seats offer 79 inches of sleeping space, wireless charging, personal storage, and a 17-inch 4K QLED HDR touchscreen. These features are designed to give long-haul travelers a more restful and private flying experience.

Economy Class passengers will also get upgraded seats designed for long-haul travel. The seats include personal device holders and 11.6-inch 4K entertainment screens. The overall Economy cabin has been designed to offer better comfort and convenience during the Mumbai-London flight.

Better Inflight Entertainment

The aircraft features Air India’s next-generation inflight entertainment system powered by Thales AVANT Up. Passengers across all cabins will get high-definition touchscreens, Bluetooth audio, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, AC power outlets, and an easy-to-use interface. Flyers can also connect their own Bluetooth headphones and enjoy more than 3,000 hours of entertainment content onboard.

Refreshed Onboard Service

Air India has also updated several onboard features. Passengers can expect new mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions, refreshed menus with Indian and international meals, premium redesigned amenity kits, and other improved service touches. These changes are part of Air India’s effort to offer a more consistent and refined travel experience.

Second Daily Flight to Continue with Boeing 777-300ER

Air India’s 2nd daily service between Mumbai and London Heathrow will continue to be operated by its upgraded Boeing aircraft. This aircraft includes First Class, giving passengers another premium option on the route.

Air India’s UK Network

The United Kingdom is one of Air India’s most important international markets. The airline currently operates 57 nonstop flights weekly between India and the UK. These flights connect Mumbai, Delhi, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru with London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Birmingham.

For travelers flying between Mumbai and London, the new Boeing 787-9 brings more cabin choices, better seating, improved entertainment, and upgraded onboard comfort. The addition of Premium Economy also gives passengers a new middle option between Economy and Business Class, making the route more flexible for business, leisure, and family travelers.

If you are planning a trip to Mumbai or other Indian cities, you can check suitable USA to India flight options via London on Indian Eagle. You can compare available routes, fares, and layover options to plan a comfortable and budget-friendly trip.

The New Year is set to bring new hopes for Air India as the airline unveiled sleek interiors of its custom-built first Boeing 787-9 aircraft on Monday. The hype around the new Boeing 787-9 mirrors the excitement created by the arrival of Air India’s first Airbus A350-900 in 2023.

Air India’s first Boeing 787-9 is a major attraction and is being showcased on the inaugural day of Wings India 2026 in Hyderabad. The custom-built Air India Boeing 787-9 arrived at Delhi Airport on Sunday, 11 January, from Boeing’s facility in Washington. Registered as VT-AWA,  the aircraft operated a special charter flight from Delhi to Hyderabad’s old Begumpet Airport. Notably, Air India confirmed that these newly designed cabin interiors will be introduced across its entire Boeing 787 fleet.

Sleek Interiors of First Made-for-Air India Boeing 787-9

The new B787-9 features three classes: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy, accommodating up to 296 passengers. In Economy, 238 lightweight ergonomic seats offer improved comfort, standard 11.6-inch 4K screens, and both Type-A and Type-C charging options. However, only 220 Economy seats are currently available for booking due to pending regulatory approvals for some seats. The Air India Boeing 787-9 Premium Economy cabin includes 28 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration with roomy legroom, adjustable headrests, calf and leg rests, and larger 4K screens with fast-charging ports

The Air India Business Class in the new B787-9 has 30 suites in a 1-2-1 layout. This gives every passenger direct aisle access. These suites convert into fully flat beds and include a 42-inch pitch, 17-inch 4K entertainment screens, wireless charging, Bluetooth audio pairing, and multiple USB and Type-C power outlets. There is also ample storage, vanity mirrors, and lighting features inspired by Indian design motifs. However, the sliding privacy doors in the Business Class suites are awaiting regulatory clearance and are not yet accessible to passengers. All other suite amenities and functions are fully operational.

When will Air India’s custom-built first Boeing 787-9 start operations?

Air India will begin commercial operations with its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft on Mumbai-Frankfurt flights from February 1, 2026. Reportedly, three more custom-built Boeing 787-9s will join the Air India fleet this year. However, there’s no announcement on when the first Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be used to operate Air India flights from USA to India or on other routes.
