Newark Liberty International Airport is preparing for another major upgrade as passenger traffic continues to grow. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is moving ahead with plans to expand Terminal A, which could eventually add eight more gates. The work is part of a much larger effort to modernize Newark Airport, including a new AirTrain, changes to Terminal B and upgrades across the airport.
What Is Changing at Newark Terminal A?
The latest Newark Terminal A expansion will increase the terminal’s gate capacity and add more space for passengers. Terminal A currently has 33 gates. Under the expansion plan, the Port Authority wants to add:
- Two gates on the south side
- Six gates on the north side
- More passenger seating
- New restrooms
- Additional food and beverage options
- More space for boarding and waiting
However, the two sides of the project are currently at different stages. The Port Authority has approved construction funding for the two south-side gates. The six north-side gates are still in the planning stage and will require additional approvals before full construction can begin.
What Will Passengers Get in the South Expansion?
The south-side addition is expected to increase Terminal A by about 25,000 square feet. The project will add two common-use gates, which means different airlines can use them depending on operational needs. Passengers can also expect new amenities in the expanded space, including:

Why Is Newark Airport Expanding Terminal A Again?
The current Terminal A is relatively new, but passenger demand has grown faster than originally expected. The terminal opened in 2023 and was designed to handle about 13.6 million passengers a year. By 2024, it had already handled roughly 18 million passengers.
That increase has created demand for more gates and additional passenger space. Adding capacity now could help the airport manage future growth while giving airlines more room to operate during peak hours.
When Will Newark Terminal A Construction Begin?
The south and north projects follow different schedules.
South Terminal A Expansion:
Construction on the two-gate south expansion is expected to begin in 2027. If work stays on schedule, the new gates should open in 2029.
North Terminal A Expansion:
The proposed north expansion would add another six gates. Planning is already underway, but the Port Authority still needs to approve the full construction phase. The six gates are expected to open in stages between 2030 and 2032 if the project receives the required approvals and stays on schedule. Travellers should therefore avoid assuming that all eight gates will be ready by 2029.
Newark Airport Is Getting a New AirTrain
One of the biggest projects outside the terminals is the replacement of Newark Airport’s existing AirTrain. The Port Authority is developing a new system at a cost of about $3.5 billion. The new AirTrain will connect key airport locations, including:
- Passenger terminals
- Parking areas
- Rental car facilities
- Rail connections
Passenger service is expected to begin in 2030. The new system will replace the aging AirTrain that currently moves passengers around the airport.
