Indian Aviation is recovering slowly and steadily from the COVID crisis and seems all ready to handle the post-COVID travel boom. Not only is the domestic air traffic (which registered five-fold growth this May as compared to May 2021) inching closer to pre-pandemic levels, but there has also been a sharp rise in international passenger footfall at different airports in India. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad recorded the highest international passenger recovery for the year 2021-22.

According to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), Hyderabad Airport operator, the airport served 2.7 lakh international passengers and over 15 lakh domestic passengers in May 2022. This is close to 93% and 86% of pre-COVID-19 domestic and international passenger levels respectively.

HYD Airport’s domestic recovery rate during April 2021-March 2022 is equivalent to that of Delhi International Airport, another GMR-led airport. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport also reported 401 ATMs (Air Traffic Movements) on May 15, which is 89% of the pre-COVID numbers.

Fewer international travel restrictions, a stable COVID situation in the country in the last few months, and newly launched routes (such as Chicago-Hyderabad, Maldives-Hyderabad, and Bangkok-Hyderabad) are believed to aid this recovery.

“With many countries easing restrictions and opening up skies to travellers, we are hopeful that the momentum will continue to sustain. We are all set to give enhanced passenger service and enable smoother airport operations with the first phase of the expansion set to commence services. Efforts are on to connect Hyderabad to more destinations across India and the globe,” said Pradeep Panicker, CEO of GHIA.

Major growth in domestic traffic from Hyderabad Airport is recorded on HYD-DEL and HYD-GOI routes. In the international segment, most travelers flew to Dubai in the Middle East and Singapore in the Asia Pacific from HYD Airport.
