United Introduces Basic Premium Economy and Business to Let You Fly in Comfort for Less

You can now fly in premium cabins for less amid soaring flight ticket prices. Surprised! It’s all because of basic premium economy and basic business class – two emerging fare categories for price-sensitive travelers. United Airlines is rolling out new fare options for its Premium Plus and Polaris (business class) cabins. The new tiered fare structure for premium United flights comes at a time when geopolitical tensions have raised international travel costs to a new high amid jet fuel price hikes.

What is United’s new tiered fare structure for premium cabins

The revised fare structure comprises Base, Standard, and Flexible options for United Polaris and United Premium Plus. United Airlines unbundled premium class fares to create basic business and basic premium economy tickets. It is much like basic economy that emerged exactly 10 years ago and gained momentum down the years. Valid for select Hawaii flights, transcontinental US routes, and long-haul flights to New Delhi, Manila, Sydney, London, United Airlines’ new premium fare types will soon be available for booking.

The idea behind this change is simple. Not every traveler values the same benefits. Some prioritize flexibility and lounge access, while others simply want a comfortable seat at a lower price. This new system allows you to choose what matters most to you.

Details of United’s new fare segments in premium cabins

Base Fare: This is the lowest entry price for United flights in business and premium economy. It will get you only a seat in a premium travel class sans benefits like free seat selection, free checked baggage allowance, lounge access, flight rescheduling, and refund flexibility. Basic premium fares entitle you to one carry-on bag and one checked bag for free. It may not be eligible for United Airlines’ family seating policy.

Standard Fare: In United’s new tiered fare system for premium cabins, standard fare bundles seat selection, two free checked bags (each 23 kg), change of travel date, and free access to United Club and Polaris lounges. Standard Fare is refundable only in the form of travel credit, not to a customer’s original mode of payment.

Flexible Fare: This is the highest fare segment with the perks of Standard Fare, along with absolute refundability. If your travel plans are uncertain, you should book ‘Flexible Fare’ tickets for United business or premium economy for complete peace of mind regarding refund.

United Airlines’ basic premium fare: pros and cons

United’s new tiered fare structure for premium travel cabins calls for a comparison of Base Fare and Standard Fare for same itinerary, for instance, Newark to New Delhi. If you prefer to travel light (one free checked bag), have a fixed travel schedule, and don’t have preference for aisle or window seat, Base Fare is the best bait for your travel in United Premium Plus or Polaris. If Standard Fare is significantly high compared to Base Fare + seat selection fee, you can save tens of dollars with Base Fare and fly in Premium Economy or Business Class. A double bonanza!

You should choose Standard Fare over Base Fare if

  • You have two bags to check in for free
  • Your travel dates are likely to change
  • You feel at home while sitting by window or aisle
  • You wish to upgrade from premium economy to United Business

Do seats change in United Polaris or Premium Plus, for tiered fare options

Apparently, United Airlines’ premium economy or business class seats don’t change depending on the tiered fare categories. Whether you book basic premium economy fare tickets, you get the same seat as someone else’s for Standard Fare. Whether it is Base Fare or Standard Fare, you get the same lie-flat seat in United Polaris Business and the same spacious seats with extra legroom in United Premium Plus. Also, inflight amenities and services, including dining remain consistent across the tiered fare categories.
