Indians planning a trip to the United States may need to start their visa process much earlier than expected. US visa wait times in India have reached up to 12 months for some first-time business and tourist visa applicants. The waiting period mainly affects applicants who need an in-person interview for a US visitor visa. Student and some work visa categories currently have shorter appointment waits.

US B1/B2 Visa Wait Times in India

Applicants seeking a US tourist visa from India or travelling for short-term business generally apply under the B1/B2 category. The latest appointment estimates show significant differences in waiting periods across Indian cities.

US Embassy/Consulate Average B1/B2 Wait Last Month Next Available B1/B2 Appointment
Hyderabad 11.5 months 12 months
Mumbai 11 months 11.5 months
New Delhi 7.5 months 10 months
Chennai 7 months 7.5 months
Kolkata 6 months 6.5 months

Which Indian City Has the Shortest Wait for a US Visa?

Among the major US visa processing locations in India, Kolkata currently has the shortest B1/B2 appointment wait, with the next available slot estimated at around 6.5 months. Chennai follows with an estimated wait of 7.5 months. Applicants in New Delhi may need to wait around 10 months, while Mumbai currently shows an 11.5-month wait. Hyderabad has the longest estimated delay at 12 months.

However, applicants should not assume that these waiting periods will remain unchanged. Appointment availability can change frequently, so checking the official scheduling portal may help applicants find an earlier date.

Why Do Business and Tourist Travellers Face Similar Wait Times?

The US government uses the B1 and B2 visa categories for short-term business and tourism-related travel. A B1 visa generally covers temporary business activities such as meetings, conferences or professional events. A B2 visa covers tourism, vacations and certain personal visits. Many applicants get a single B1/B2 visa that covers both business and tourist travel. Because these applicants often use the same visitor visa appointment pool, a corporate traveller attending a meeting may face a similar interview wait to someone travelling to the US for a holiday or family visit.

US Student Visa Wait Times Are Much Shorter

Students planning to study in the United States currently face much shorter appointment delays than B1/B2 applicants. The F, M and J categories cover students, vocational learners and exchange visitors.

City Next F, M or J Visa Appointment
Chennai Less than 0.5 months
Hyderabad 1.5 months
New Delhi 2 months
Kolkata 2 months
Mumbai 2.5 months

Can You Reschedule a US Visa Appointment for an Earlier Date?

Applicants who already have a visa interview appointment can continue checking the official scheduling system for earlier openings. If an earlier slot becomes available and the system permits a change, applicants may be able to reschedule their appointment. However, availability is not guaranteed. A slot visible at one moment may disappear quickly if another applicant books it. Travellers should therefore avoid relying on the possibility of finding an earlier date when making non-refundable travel arrangements.

Who Can Use the US Visa Interview Waiver?

Some applicants renewing a US visa may qualify for an interview waiver, often referred to by applicants as the dropbox process. However, eligibility has become more limited. Certain applicants renewing a full-validity B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of the previous visa’s expiration may qualify if they meet all applicable conditions. An interview waiver is not automatic. A consular officer can still ask an applicant to attend an in-person interview. Applicants should also avoid assuming that the dropbox process always takes a fixed number of weeks. Visa processing time can differ depending on the application and how busy the consulate is.

What Do the Longer Visa Wait Times Mean for Indian Travellers?

For tourists and business travellers, the biggest message is simple: plan early. Someone hoping to visit the United States several months from now could still face difficulty finding a convenient B1/B2 appointment, particularly in Hyderabad, Mumbai or New Delhi.

Kolkata and Chennai currently show shorter queues, but even these locations have waiting periods measured in months rather than weeks. Applicants should treat published wait times as estimates and continue checking official appointment systems for changes. The gap between visitor visa and student visa appointment availability also shows that processing pressure varies significantly by visa category.

For anyone planning travel from India to USA, checking visa availability before finalising a trip can help avoid last-minute problems. Since appointment estimates can change, applicants should monitor official US visa channels regularly and plan well ahead of their intended travel dates.

Indians seeking a business or tourist visa will now be able to apply for an appointment at a US embassy or consulate outside India. In a move to reduce wait time for US visa, the US embassy in India made this announcement yesterday. Currently, the waiting period for US visa at a few centers in the country is around 800 days.

Recently the US Embassy in Thailand has opened B1/B2 appointment slots for Indians who will be visiting the country in the coming months. Similarly, appointments for US business and tourist visas will soon be made available for Indians visiting other countries.

Special interviews are being organized on Saturdays for first-time applicants at the US embassy in Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai. While additional consular staff is being deployed in order to speed up the process and reduce wait time for US visa.

Another major development for people seeking to renew their US visa is that they can now send their application via dropbox. In-person evaluation of biometrics is not required as the US government already has biometrics from their previous application.

Despite the long waiting period last year, approximately 1,25,000 Indian students were issued visas to fulfill their dream of studying in the United States. With things getting back to normal, the US embassy and consulate expects to receive a record number of student visas from India in 2023. Several efforts are being made to avoid any further backlogs.

The US mission in India has released more than 2,50,000 additional B1/B2 appointments a fortnight ago, while also adjudicating 8,00,000+ non-immigrant visas in 2022.

A proposed hike in US visa application fee for employment-based visas was also announced earlier this year. But it is uncertain whether it will have any impact on the US visa applications in the coming months.
