The O’Hare 21 program will create nearly three million square feet of additional space and increase gate capacity by 25%. Construction crews are developing Concourse D, the facility’s first new concourse in more than 30 years. ORD has also expanded Terminal 5 and continues to upgrade Terminal 3 with additional gates and modern amenities.

San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport (SAN) handled 25.3 million travelers in 2025. Its original Terminal 1 opened in 1967 and operated for nearly 60 years. Over time, limited space, outdated security areas and fewer amenities made the building less suitable for modern travel.

San Diego decided to replace the old structure instead of making small upgrades. The first phase of the new Terminal 1 opened in September 2025 with 19 gates. It includes a spacious ticketing hall, 13 security lanes, seven baggage carousels and more dining and shopping choices. SAN opened three additional gates in spring 2026. It plans to add eight more by early 2028, bringing the total to 30.

Nashville International Airport

Nashville International Airport (BNA) serves more than 24.8 million people annually. Strong population growth, tourism and business activity have pushed traffic beyond earlier estimates.

BNA launched the New Horizon program to prepare for up to 40 million annual travelers. Its Central Core Enhancement project will improve access between ticketing, baggage claim and ground transportation areas. The development will add elevators and escalators to reduce crowding and help people move through the building more easily. BNA expects to finish several major projects between 2027 and 2029.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) handles more than 20 million people each year. Austin’s growing population, technology sector and tourism industry have increased the demand for flights.

During peak hours, crowded ticket counters, security lines, baggage claim areas and roads can cause delays. The Journey With AUS program aims to address these problems by adding 32 gates. Concourse B will include 26, while Concourse M will provide six. AUS also plans to construct a new Arrivals and Departures Hall. It will feature a central TSA checkpoint, additional ticket counters, a larger baggage claim area, better road access and upgraded amenities.

Southwest Florida International Airport

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers welcomed more than 11.1 million people in 2025. It provides access to Fort Myers, Naples and other destinations along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Growing demand has created a need for more gates, larger security areas and better facilities. RSW is expanding its terminal and constructing Concourse E. The work will improve baggage handling, create more shopping and dining space and provide a larger security checkpoint. These upgrades will help RSW manage busy travel periods, especially during Florida’s winter tourism season.
