Built at a whopping cost of $2.7 billion, the new Terminal A will replace the existing one, which has been in use for almost 50 years now.

The new Terminal A will have 33 gates, while phase 1 of the project will include 21 gates, the remaining 12 will become functional in the second phase, which will likely be completed by 2023.

Phase 1 of the new Terminal A will likely be operational for passengers by the end of this year. Built over more than 1 million sq ft, it will have state-of-the-art infrastructure and two monumental pieces of art. In a partnership with the Public Art Fund, the Port Authority and Munich Airport NJ that operates the Newark Airport, authorities have spent $6 million on two splendid artworks by Layqa Nuna Yawar (a public artist, muralist and multidisciplinary storyteller) and Karyn Olivier (Philadelphia-based artist popular for creating sculptures, installations and other forms of public art) for the new departure and arrivals hall. The artworks at the new Terminal A showcase the amazing history and beautiful landscape of New Jersey.

The advisory council also chose existing artworks by 27 talented local artists that would likely be displayed over the digital banner on the departures level and even via large photographs and diptychs all throughout the new Terminal A.

Facilities at Newark Liberty International Airport’s New Terminal A

Apart from being a visual delight, phase 1 of the new terminal will also offer world-class facilities for the passengers. It will have numerous restaurants and cafes like Starbucks and four swanky new lounges. This also includes the American Express Centurion Lounge that is spread over 18,000 sq ft and offers breathtaking views of the beautiful Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River.

Some major developments include new check-in spaces, scanning of boarding passes via touchless security checkpoints, four lanes of curb space in order to reduce crowd, touchless boarding areas, and a 2,700 sq ft parking area

The Newark Liberty International Airport is a major hub of United Airlines; other popular airlines operating from the airport include American Airlines, Air Canada, JetBlue, Delta etc.

Chaos ensued at US airports as several airlines, across the country, cancelled a number of flights on Thursday (16th June). This was the worst day ever in the 2022 summer travel season so far as approximately 1500 flights didn’t take off as scheduled. New York’s LaGuardia Airport even dropped considerable number of flights at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty Airport.

Shortage of staff is the main reason cited for this chaos at the airports. In the wake of the pandemic, it seems, airlines are yet not fully prepared to tackle the heavy summer travel season. This sentiment was echoed by the pilot unions at Southwest, Delta, and American Airlines. As per their statements, airlines have not yet made proper arrangements to hire new staff to replace those who took a leave of absence during the pandemic or those who retired in the past two years.

As these cancellations were ongoing, a meeting was held between CEOs of various airlines and Pete Buttigieg; the transport secretary. This meeting clearly showcased Biden administration’s growing concerns over the ongoing airport chaos and subsequently-ruined travel plans of thousands of citizens and tourists.

During the meeting via videoconferencing, the transport secretary asked airline bosses to describe their strategies and plans to ensure rest of the summer remains hassle-free for travelers. With the upcoming 4th of July weekend; cancellation of flights is a growing concern. There were thousands of cancellations during the Memorial Day weekend in June too. The Biden administration certainly doesn’t want a repeat of it during the July holiday weekend. The airline bosses seemed to have ensured the transport secretary that they are working hard to stabilize the current situation.

If you are taking flights from USA to India this summer; you can rely on Indian Eagle for hassle-free ticket bookings and also to handle queries related to cancellations in case the situation with airlines’ cancelling their flights doesn’t improve.
