Luay Nakhleh, William and Stephanie Sick Dean of Engineering and Computing at Rice University, praised Pai for combining technical expertise with a strong commitment to serving others. The university announced the award on October 19, 2026, and formally honored Pai at the George R. Brown School of Engineering and Computing Alumni Awards Celebration on October 22, 2026.

Who Is Vinay Pai? Education and Career Background

Vinay Pai is an Indian American technology entrepreneur and former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at BILL, a financial technology company. He studied at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he earned three degrees. Pai completed his bachelor’s degrees in computer science and electrical engineering in 1988. He later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1991.

After completing his studies at Rice University, Pai went on to work with companies such as Intuit, Fiserv (formerly First Data) and BILL. Over the years, he took on several leadership roles and worked on technology that made financial services easier for businesses and customers.

Vinay Pai’s Major Achievements in the Fintech Industry

Vinay Pai played an important role in the growth of BILL, a company that helps businesses manage their payments and finances. He served as the company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO). When Pai joined BILL, the engineering team had around 65 engineers. Under his leadership, the team grew to more than 750 engineers. He also helped the company introduce international and real-time payments.

Pai was part of BILL’s growth journey when the company went public in 2019. He also helped drive major acquisitions, including Divvy for $2.5 billion and Invoice2go for $625 million.

Vinay Pai’s Work in Artificial Intelligence and Financial Technology

Pai later founded Prosperos.ai, where he served as CEO and developed AI-driven fintech solutions to improve access to financial services. The idea behind the company was simple. Not everyone has easy access to banking services, credit or institutional data. Prosperos.ai aimed to make financial services and data more accessible through technology.

After founding and leading Prosperos.ai, Pai moved into an advisory role. He now works with companies and business leaders, helping them make decisions about technology and develop new products.

Vinay Pai and Aarti Pai’s Contributions to Education and Communities

Pai has spent much of his career working in technology, but he has also made time to support education and community programs. Along with his wife, Aarti Pai, he has supported students and local organizations that assist underserved communities.

Supporting Rice University Students

Vinay and Aarti Pai have a close connection with Rice University. The couple established an endowed scholarship for computer science students at Rice University. They also established the Vinay and Aarti Pai Chair in Computer Science, with matching support from John and Ann Doerr. The funding helps the university strengthen its faculty and advance computer science education and research. For the couple, supporting Rice is also a way to give future students some of the opportunities that helped shape Pai’s own career.

Helping Underserved Communities

The couple’s work is not limited to education. In California’s Bay Area, Vinay and Aarti Pai have supported food banks and local nonprofit organizations. These groups help families who struggle to meet their everyday needs. Rather than focusing on one issue, the couple supports organizations that address basic needs in their communities. Their contributions help these groups continue providing food and other essential support to families who need it.

Vinay Pai’s Efforts to Support Women in Technology

During his time at BILL, Pai also helped launch a program supporting women in technology. The program connected young women in technology with experienced mentors who could offer career advice and guidance. It also provided sponsorship opportunities to help women move forward in their careers. Through this program, Pai worked to give women more opportunities to learn, grow and take on leadership roles in the technology industry.

Vinay Pai’s Continued Connection with Rice University

Even after building a career in technology, Pai has remained closely involved with Rice University. He serves on the university’s Board of Trustees and chairs its Development, Alumni Relations and Public Affairs Committee. He has also chaired the School of Engineering and Computing External Advisory Board.

Pai has also mentored students and sponsored D2K datathons and hackathons. These activities give students a chance to learn from someone who has spent years working in the technology industry. His continued involvement shows how he has stayed connected to the university where he began his career.

Vinay Pai’s 2026 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award recognizes his contributions to technology, financial services and education. His career has taken him from Rice University to leadership positions at major technology companies.

Along the way, he and his wife have also supported students, women in technology and families in need. His achievements show how a successful career can create opportunities for others.
