Indian-American Pia Dandiya has won the election to represent Florida’s 22nd Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, defeating Republican Casey Askar in the 2026 US midterm elections. Dandiya received around 51.9% of the vote, while Askar secured 48.1%, according to reported election results. The former high school principal’s victory on November 3 has highlighted her journey from education to American politics.

Pia Dandiya Defeats Casey Askar in Florida’s 22nd District

Pia Dandiya received around 51.9% of the vote, while her Republican opponent, Casey Askar, secured about 48.1%, according to reported election results.

The race was closely watched because Florida had recently redrawn its congressional district boundaries. The changes created an open-seat contest in the newly configured 22nd District, with no incumbent running for the seat.

For Democrats, Dandiya’s win was an important result. It also meant that another Indian-American candidate had successfully won a seat in the US House of Representatives.

Who Is Pia Dandiya?

Pia Dandiya was born and raised in Palm Beach County, Florida. Her parents immigrated to the United States from India, and she grew up in America. Before entering politics, Dandiya built her career in education. She started out as a teacher and later became a high school principal in Harlem, New York.

She also worked in government and technology. Dandiya served as a White House Fellow at the Domestic Policy Council and the US Department of Education. She later led public-sector work at Apple, focusing on modernizing education and other public services.

Her career gave her experience in schools, government and technology before she decided to run for Congress. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in Government from Harvard University.

From High School Principal to US Congresswoman

Dandiya became the founding principal of a high school in Harlem when she was just 28 years old. She wanted to help students from families with limited financial resources. Her goal was to make sure they had a better chance of getting into college and building successful careers.

According to her campaign website, 86% of the students at the school came from low-income families. Despite these challenges, 100% of her students earned admission to college.

For many families, this was a significant achievement. College can open doors to jobs and opportunities that may otherwise be difficult to find. During her years as a principal, Dandiya worked closely with students, parents and teachers.

She later worked in public policy and technology before entering politics. Her experience in these fields helped shape her interest in education reform and public service.

Why Pia Dandiya’s Election Victory Matters

Dandiya’s win is important for Democrats in Florida, but it has also drawn attention from the Indian-American community. More Indian Americans have been taking part in US politics in recent years. Some are running for Congress, while others are getting involved in state and local elections.

Dandiya’s victory is particularly significant because she becomes the first South Asian American elected to represent Florida in the US House of Representatives. She will join other Indian-origin lawmakers in Washington when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.

Indian American Impact, an organization that supports Indian-American political participation, welcomed her victory. Chintan Patel, the group’s executive director, congratulated Dandiya and praised her campaign. The organization had supported her campaign throughout the election.

Her win also means Florida’s 22nd District will have a representative with experience in education, government and technology.

Pia Dandiya’s Political Journey and Florida Redistricting

Dandiya originally planned to run against Republican Congressman Brian Mast in Florida’s 21st Congressional District. However, Florida redrew its congressional district boundaries ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

This affected several races, including the one Dandiya had initially planned to contest. She later decided to run in the 22nd District instead.

The redrawn district became an open-seat contest, with no incumbent running for the position. Both Democratic and Republican candidates had an opportunity to compete for the seat.

Dandiya secured the Democratic nomination in August 2026 after defeating Kaysia Earley in the primary. She then faced Republican nominee Casey Askar in the November election. Both candidates campaigned for the seat, but Dandiya received more votes and won the race.

What Comes Next for Pia Dandiya?

Dandiya is expected to begin her work in Congress in January 2027. During her campaign, she spoke about improving education, making everyday expenses more affordable and creating better opportunities for working families.

Her experience as a teacher and principal could help her understand the challenges faced by students, parents and schools. She has also highlighted issues such as affordable healthcare, childcare, job opportunities and the rising cost of living.

But winning an election is only the beginning. Residents will now want to see what she does about the issues she discussed during her campaign. Once she takes office, Dandiya will take part in making laws, voting on national issues and representing people in her district.

Pia Dandiya has come a long way from working as a teacher and high school principal to winning a seat in the US Congress. Her victory in the 2026 midterm elections is an important moment for her and for Indian Americans who follow US politics.

Now, the focus will move from her election campaign to the work she will begin in Congress in January 2027. People in Florida’s 22nd District will be watching to see how she handles issues such as education, living costs and jobs.
