How to Use the DigiYatra App

  • Install the official DigiYatra app on your smartphone from the Play Store or App Store.
  • Sign up using your mobile number linked with Aadhaar. You will need to complete Aadhaar-based verification for identity setup.
  • After verification, your identity and facial data are securely stored to generate a DigiYatra ID.
  • Enter or scan your boarding pass in the app for your upcoming domestic flight.
  • At DigiYatra-enabled airports, your face is scanned for automatic entry, security, and boarding, so you don’t need to repeatedly show your ID or boarding pass.

After completing the DigiYatra process, proceed to the dedicated entry e-gate at the airport, scan your boarding pass, and complete facial recognition to enter. If you have checked-in luggage, drop it at the airline counter; otherwise, move directly to security. At the DigiYatra security gate, complete another facial scan for access. After clearing security, proceed to your boarding gate for departure.

FAQs

Do I still need to carry a physical ID if I use DigiYatra?

Yes. Even though DigiYatra uses facial recognition for entry, airlines and airport authorities may still ask for a valid government ID as a backup during check-in or security verification.

Is DigiYatra data stored permanently in the system?

No. DigiYatra is designed with a privacy-first approach. Passenger biometric data is generally stored in an encrypted form on the user’s device and is shared only temporarily for verification during travel.

Can two people use the same DigiYatra app on one phone?

No. Each DigiYatra profile is linked to a single individual’s identity. However, one person can help multiple family members install and register the app on their respective devices.

What happens if facial recognition fails at the airport gate?

If the system fails to recognize your face, you are redirected to the manual verification process using your boarding pass and ID proof. It does not delay your travel significantly.

Can I use DigiYatra without Aadhaar?

Most registrations are Aadhaar-based for identity verification, but alternative ID methods may be supported depending on airline and airport policy. Aadhaar significantly simplifies onboarding.

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi has recently allowed passengers to access the ‘DigiYatra’ facility without downloading the mobile application. This innovative service aims to simplify the travel experience for all passengers, especially those who are less familiar with the technology.

Streamlined Registration Process for DigiYatra

Terminal-3 at IGI Airport has introduced a three-step registration process that enables travelers to use DigiYatra effortlessly. The new initiative eliminates the need for passengers to download the app and offers a seamless registration experience. Using facial recognition technology, passengers can now utilize their faces as identification within the airport premises. This passenger-centric approach ensures a smooth and secure travel experience, as passengers no longer need to carry physical documents for identification.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the entity responsible for managing and operating IGI Airport, has introduced this initiative based on the demands and feedback received from passengers. By simplifying the DigiYatra process, DIAL aims to enhance the overall travel experience and meet the evolving needs of passengers.

Airports across the world constantly implement new tech for seamless processes. These developments have accelerated since and after COVID especially for contactless tech. India too has started launching new systems at international airports to facilitate passenger check-ins and travel. One such contactless airport tech in India is the newly-launched beta version of the DigiYatra App.

About the DigiYatra App

DigiYatra or the DigiYatra Central Ecosystem (DYCE) enables passenger verification via face biometrics. It will allow passengers to validate their boarding pass too. To start with; AirAsia and Vistara have integrated their systems with the app as part of the testing process.

It is a tech based on ‘Facial Recognition Technology’. This tech is getting a lot of traction around major airports worldwide. The reason is that it allows passengers to check-in at airports in a contactless manner and makes the entire security clearance process seamless. Such tech is also referred to as ‘Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel’ or BEST experience.

When signing up on the app; passengers require to link it with their Aadhaar. Then they need to upload a photograph of themselves along with their boarding pass before traveling. Some other documents may also be necessary for traveling purposes. Passengers registered on the app need to simply scan their faces at the cameras installed at the airport to enable facial recognition and pass through the entrance as well as the security gates.

Initial Rollout of the DigiYatra App

The initial rollouts were planned for Delhi Airport (DIAL) and Bangalore Airport (BIAL). The testing of the app has been going on at both these airports. Authorities at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi carried out testing of the app with more than 20,000 passengers. Only when the testing was successful; the beta version was launched at the Delhi Airport.

The trial phase has been ongoing at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru since 2017. BIAL is one of the stakeholders of the Digi Yatra Foundation. The roll out was planned for 15th August, 2022 and was successful.

Passengers can register on the app before their journey. Their travel data will be deleted from the app once the journey is complete and within 24 hours. This has been planned to protect the privacy of the passengers. As of now, the app is available for android. Soon the iOS version will also be launched. At IGIA; it is currently available only at Terminal 3 and for domestic passengers.

Eventually, DigiYatra will be rolled-out on a pan-India basis. This contactless airport tech in India is certainly made to streamline security processes at the airport and provide more convenience to passengers.

Indian Airports are constantly upgrading their tech and processes. If you are flying to India and taking connecting flights from Delhi or other cities; prepare for a more seamless experience due to many facilities now available for passengers at international airports. You can book your tickets via India Eagle and travel to India even more easily.
