Canada has introduced important changes for international students in 2026. Students planning to pursue a course in Canada now are required to demonstrate more money for day-to-day costs, meet stricter document checks, and understand the limits on new study permits. Many people search for a “Canada student visa,” but Canada issues permission for higher education to eligible students. Understanding the latest Canada study permit rules can help students prepare a stronger application.

Higher Financial Requirements for Students Applying to Canada

From September 1, 2026, students applying to pursue a course in Canada must show that they can afford their stay. Those studying outside Quebec must provide proof of at least C$23,448 to cover one year of living expenses.

This amount does not cover course fees or travel costs. Students travelling with family members must show a higher amount. For instance, a student travelling with two family members needs to show C$35,888 for living expenses.

Students should calculate their full budget before applying. This includes:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • Travel costs
  • Health insurance and other personal costs

Quebec follows separate financial rules, so students planning to continue their education there should check the latest requirements carefully.

Canada Sets New Limits for International Student Admissions

Canada continues to manage the number of new international students entering the country. The government has set a target of 155,000 new international student arrivals in 2026. It also expects to issue up to 180,000 study permits to applicants who need a PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) or TAL (Territorial Attestation Letter). These numbers are different. The first number refers to new student arrivals, while the second relates to pursuing course permits issued under the PAL and TAL allocation system.

What Is a PAL or TAL?

Most overseas students need a TAL or PAL when applying for permission for higher education in Canada. This letter shows that the applicant has secured a spot under the province or territory’s student quota. An approved Canadian college or university usually helps students get the required letter after they accept admission. However, entry into a Canadian college or university does not guarantee study permit approval. Students must still meet all immigration, financial, and document requirements.

Canada Verifies Admission Documents

Canada now checks Letters of Acceptance more carefully to prevent fraud in the international student programme. A designated learning institution must verify the admission confirmation letter submitted with a post-secondary application to continue their education in Canada. Students should make sure their admission letter, financial papers, and other documents are genuine and accurate.

If immigration officials find misleading information or documents, they may refuse the application. False documents can also lead to misrepresentation consequences.

Co-op and Internship Rules Are Easier for Eligible Students

Canada has simplified co-op and internship rules for eligible post-secondary international students. Since April 1, 2026, eligible students do not need a separate co-op work permit for a mandatory work placement, internship, practicum, or co-op programme.

To qualify, students must have work authorization printed on their initial study permit, study full time at an eligible post-secondary institution, and obtain a letter confirming that the placement is required for their programme. The placement must make up 50% or less of the study programme. Secondary-school students still need a co-op work permit for mandatory work placements.

What Should Students Do Before Applying?

Students should prepare their Canadian study authorization application carefully. They should:

  • Choose an approved university
  • Check whether they need a TAL or PAL
  • Arrange enough funds for tuition, travel, and living expenses
  • Submit genuine admission and financial documents
  • Check the latest IRCC requirements before submitting your application

Canada’s 2026 student visa rules require students to plan early and provide accurate documents. Understanding proof-of-funds rules, PAL or TAL requirements, and co-op updates can help students prepare for their studies in Canada.
