In a significant step, it has been revealed that all international flight operations will shift by the first week of July and will start operating out of the airport in Chennai’s brand-new integrated terminal. In early April, the authorities officially opened a section of this enormous terminal that covers 1,36,295 square meters. The following week, they conducted a test run. Since then, they have conducted a number of testing procedures and trials, and earlier this month, the integrated terminal gradually became the hub for airline operations.

Out of the 26 airlines operating at the Chennai airport, 10 have permanently shifted their operations to the new terminal. These notable airlines include Air Arabia, Air Asia, IndiGo, Jazeera Airways, Air India, Alliance Air, and Ethiopian Airlines. Experts predict that the 16 other airlines will follow suit within the next two weeks.
Once the integrated terminal at the Chennai airport is fully functional, authorities will dismantle the existing international terminal, which has so far accommodated certain arrival operations. The authorities expect the integrated terminal under construction to comprise the remaining components, and they anticipate that this project will last over a year.
In addition to the terminal building, the airport authorities are also concentrating on increasing airside capacity. They are constructing rapid departure lanes, which will enhance airplane handling and allow for a higher number of flights per hour.
