First Mahakal Sawari 2026 takes place today, August 3, marking the first Monday of the holy month of Sawan (Shravan). Thousands of devotees have gathered in Ujjain to witness the sacred procession of Lord Mahakal, one of the city’s most cherished religious traditions.
The sacred procession is expected to draw pilgrims from across Madhya Pradesh and other parts of India. The city has been decorated with flowers, lights, and festive displays as preparations for the grand event are complete.
Lord Mahakal to Bless Devotees in Chandramauleshwar Form
During the procession, Lord Mahakal will be seated in a beautifully adorned silver palanquin in his Chandramauleshwar form. Before the procession begins, temple priests will perform a special puja at the Sabha Mandap at 3:30 PM. The First Mahakal Sawari 2026 procession will leave the Mahakaleshwar Temple at 4:00 PM. Devotees are expected to line both sides of the Mahakal Sawari route to seek blessings and offer flowers as the palanquin passes through the city.
Mahakal Sawari Route
The procession will begin from the Mahakaleshwar Temple and pass through several important areas of Ujjain, including:
- Mahakal Chouraha
- Gudri Chouraha
- Bakshi Bazaar
- Kaharwadi
- Ram Ghat
At Ram Ghat, priests will perform the traditional Shipra Jal Abhishek using the holy water of the Shipra River. A grand aarti will follow before the procession starts its return journey.
On the way back, the palanquin will pass through Ramanujkot, Kartik Chowk, Dhaba Road, Tanki Chowk, Chhatri Chowk, Gopal Mandir, Patni Bazaar, and Gudri Bazaar before reaching the temple at around 7 PM.
Temple Extends Special Timings During Shravan
The Mahakaleshwar Temple has introduced special timings for the Shravan month due to the expected increase in devotee footfall. On Mondays, the temple opens at 2:30 AM, allowing devotees to participate in the famous Bhasma Aarti. The Mahakal Sawari timings allow devotees to attend both the early morning rituals and the evening procession.
Six Mahakal Sawaris Scheduled This Year
The Mahakaleshwar Temple will organize six Mahakal Sawaris during the Shravan and Bhadrapada months. The Mahakal Sawari schedule is:
- August 3 – First Mahakal Sawari
- August 10 – Second Mahakal Sawari
- August 17 – Third Mahakal Sawari
- August 24 – Fourth Mahakal Sawari
- August 31 – Fifth Mahakal Sawari
- September 7 – Grand Shahi Mahakal Sawari
