Diwali is celebrated across the world with sheer zeal. Millions of Indians around the world begin preparing for the ‘festival of lights’ days in advance. Many living in USA or other countries book tickets to celebrate with their family in India. Others, however, choose to stay back and celebrate Diwali in their new home away from home. For many, the true joy of Diwali lies not in the distance but in the spirit of togetherness.

Across the USA, Diwali has become more than just an Indian festival. It is a celebration that signifies diversity, unity and cultural exchange. The Indian diaspora has brought the warmth and light of this festival to American cities, which makes it a shared cultural event for all communities. The following states have recognized Diwali as a holiday:

Diwali Celebrations in USA

Diwali in the USA is celebrated with the same vibrancy as in India. People come together to honor the festival of lights. Neighborhoods in cities with large Indian communities come alive with festivities. The younger generation especially enjoys attending major Diwali events in USA. Celebrations at Times Square in New York City have become an Instagram favorite. Diwali melas in Atlanta, Dallas and Hudson also attract thousands of visitors.

Temples in the USA, such as the Ganesh Temple in Flushing, New York City, hold special prayers and aarti ceremonies. Families wear traditional attire, exchange sweets, and light diyas at home. Indian restaurants and sweet shops are bustling with people buying popular Diwali treats like laddoos, barfis, and samosas.

US States Observing Diwali as a Holiday

Some US states recognize the cultural and religious importance of Diwali. While a few have declared it an official state holiday, others observe it as a holiday specifically for schools. The states observing Diwali are as follows:

Pennsylvania

In October 2024, Pennsylvania made history by becoming the first US state to officially recognize Diwali as a state holiday. Governor Josh Shapiro signed the resolution recognizing the festival’s significance for Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. Under this decision, schools and government offices can now observe Diwali in Pennsylvania as an official day off.

Connecticut

Connecticut became the second US state to officially recognize Diwali in June 2025, when Governor Ned Lamont signed SB 1519 into law. The legislation takes effect on October 1, 2025, making Diwali a state-recognized observance for schools and state institutions.

California

California became the third US state to declare Diwali as an official state holiday on October 6, 2025. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 268, making the decision effective from January 1, 2026. Public schools and colleges can now close for Diwali in California, and state employees are eligible for paid leave.

New York

Although Diwali is not a state holiday, New York City made headlines in June 2023 when Mayor Eric Adams announced it would be recognized as a public school holiday. This move allows public school students to officially have a day off to celebrate Diwali in New York City.
