As per the Delhi airport latest update, Indira Gandhi International Airport is soon to surpass the Atlanta airport as the world’s largest aviation hub in terms of more passengers. The Indian aviation industry has been experiencing remarkable growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The infrastructure development of Indian airports has been exponential. Over the past nine years, India has constructed 74 airports including domestic and international both. Among these airports, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi stands as the largest and busiest, catering to both domestic and international flights. There has been a steady increase in the airport’s capacity in recent years, and after the Covid-19 pandemic, it has risen to become one of the largest airports globally.

Through its ongoing expansion, the Delhi International Airport is set to claim the title of the world’s largest airport. This ambitious project aims to position the airport among the global giants, surpassing the current leader, Atlanta Airport, based on passenger capacity.

A Growing Giant: Capacity and Projections

Currently, Indira Gandhi International Airport serves 70 million passengers, a number expected to rise to 109 million by the end of this year. Notably, the airport boasts the distinction of having three runways, a rarity among Indian airports. However, with the completion of a new runway in September, the airport will solidify its position as one of the largest airports worldwide, even surpassing Atlanta Airport.

Surpassing the Competition: The Fourth Runway

The addition of a fourth runway will make the Delhi International Airport the only airport in India with four runways. Combined with the existing three terminal buildings, this expansion will enable the airport to accommodate over 100 million passengers by the end of 2023, further establishing its dominance in the global aviation arena.

As per recent reports, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is working on the establishment of two international terminals. IndiGo, India’s leading domestic airline, has approached Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) with a request to develop facilities capable of handling international traffic at the expanded Terminal 1, which has previously been exclusively dedicated to domestic flights.

Delhi International Airport’s ongoing expansion is propelling it towards becoming the world’s largest airport. With its growing capacity, additional runways, and potential international terminals, the airport is positioning itself as a global aviation powerhouse. Thus, the future of Delhi International Airport looks brighter than ever.
