Chennai Rains Latest Update: As heavy rains and crosswinds continue to thrash Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu, the Chennai International Airport has suspended all incoming flights till 6 pm today. The decision has been taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and severity of wind, tweeted the airport authorities.
As per Chennai weather reports, the depression formed in the Bay of Bengal is moving inland and is expected to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh this evening, leading to strong winds blowing in the city at a speed of about 45 kmph.
Although incoming flights are being diverted to Bengaluru or Hyderabad airport, flights departing from Chennai airport will take off (with delays). Regretting the inconvenience, the airport requested arriving passengers to contact the concerned airline(s) for updates regarding schedules.
Tamil Nadu has recorded more than 50 percent excess rainfall in the last 40 days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for 8 districts, including Chennai, Kanchipuram and Puducherry, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next few days.
This suspension on arriving flights at Chennai airport might be extended in case the weather condition worsens in the city. Check this space for the latest Chennai updates!
