The Census 2027 self-enumeration process enables households in India to submit their census information online via the official self-enumeration portal. It helps improve accuracy, reduces manual errors, and saves time during the census process.

The government portal is usually activated 15 days before the house-listing phase begins in each state or Union Territory. During this period, households can register, fill in their details, and submit the form online. Once completed, a unique SE ID is generated, which is later verified during the official census enumeration process.

Below is a step-by-step guide to complete the process using the official government portal.

Self-Enumeration Process

Visit the Official Portal: Go to the online Census portal and begin the registration process.

Select Your State/UT: Choose your State or Union Territory and complete the CAPTCHA verification.

Enter Household Details: Provide the head of household’s name, a mandatory mobile number, and an optional email ID.

Verify OTP: An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. Enter it to verify your identity.

Choose Language: Select your preferred language from the available options (multiple regional languages supported).

Locate Your Residence: Use the interactive map to select your district, town, or village and mark your exact home location.

Fill the Questionnaire: Complete approximately 33 questions covering housing conditions, amenities (water, electricity, sanitation, etc.), and household member details.

Submit the Form: After reviewing your details, click “Final Submit”.

Save SE ID: A unique 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) will be sent to you via SMS or email. Keep it safe.

Verify Details with the Enumerator: When the official census enumerator visits your home, provide the SE ID for verification.

Registration Guidelines

  • Each mobile number can be used for only one household
  • The process usually takes 15–20 minutes
  • Participation is optional, but strongly recommended for accuracy
  • Make sure your mobile number is active during registration
  • Keep your SE ID safely stored for future reference

Note: If you face issues during registration, check your internet connection, recheck your mobile number and OTP, or use the portal support details.

FAQs

When is the end date for online census registration?

It is available only during Phase I (April–September 2026) and usually closes in about 15 days per state, with exact dates varying by region (generally between April and July 2026).

Can I edit my form after final submission?
No. Once you click “Final Submit”, the data is locked. However, during the enumerator visit, you can clarify or correct information, which will be updated in the official record.

What happens if I lose my 11-digit SE ID?
You can retrieve it using your registered mobile number on the portal during the active enumeration window. If needed, the enumerator can also re-check your details during the visit.

Is self-enumeration mandatory for all households?
No. It is completely optional, but it helps reduce errors and speeds up the census process for both citizens and officials.

Can multiple family members register separately for the same household?
No. Only one registration per household is allowed using the head of household’s mobile number. Duplicate entries may be rejected or merged.

What if my location is incorrectly marked on the map?
You should try adjusting the pin carefully before submission. If it still ends up incorrect, the field enumerator will verify and correct it during the physical visit.

Do I need Aadhaar or ID proof to complete the process?
Generally, no document upload is required at this stage. However, the enumerator may ask for basic verification during their visit.

What if I enter the wrong mobile number during registration?
You will not receive the OTP or SE ID. In such cases, you may need to restart the registration with the correct number.

Will my data be shared with other government departments?
Census data is strictly confidential and used only for statistical purposes. It is not shared for taxation, policing, or commercial use.

Do tenants and landlords fill separate forms?
Yes. The census is based on household residence, not property ownership. Tenants fill their own household details separately.

What if I live in a newly constructed house not on the map?
You can manually adjust the location pin. Field staff will later verify and officially assign the correct enumeration unit.
